   Hello,

   Let me introduce myself. My name is Andre Peters, and I work for End
   User Computing Distribution in Nijmegen, Holland. Apart from programming
   and computers in general, my favorite pastime is Music (with a Capital M).
   The kind of records I listen to are mainly PWL records. If the term doesn't
   make sense to you, you probably don't want to read this note any further.

   I am trying to find a person that is just as interested in my (thus: our)
   music as I am. To help you determine what kind of person I am (looking for)
   I will list some of my all-time favorites, along with some comments.

   In no particular order:

 The Reynolds Girls - I'd Rather Jack
     One of the most energetic records of this moment; I hope there will be
     a remix soon. This mix was done by Pete Hammond.

 Rick Astley - She wants to dance with me (Night and Day remix)
     The title of the mix was on a label on the sleeve; it may have another
     name in other parts of the world. I have an imported 12" from the States.
     There is much more rhythm in this remix, and the bassline is full of
     melody. An absolute must for every PWL- or Pete Hammond fan.

 Rick Astley - It would take a strong, strong man
     No 'remix' name attached to this one - but a remix it is! A jazzy
     piano and guitar ensemble makes you feel like you flow away, while
     a pumping beat and an unavoidable low bass keep the rhythm going.

 Rick Astley - Together Forever (The House Of Love Mix)
     This is the one I would save if my house were on fire. The nr.1 mix
     done by Pete Hammond. Probably the most forceful bass-beat ever to
     be put on vinyl (I have no Compact Disc Player - yet). Lots of
     samples, bass, and other goodies. I could go lyric over this one.

 Gloria Estefan & MMS - 1,2,3 (Dancing by numbers mix)
     This is (at least in Holland) the B-side of "Anything for you", the
     number one slow song of the last few weeks. The first few minutes
     are hardly recognizable (which is o.k. for a remix), but again it's
     that distinctive PWL bassline that drives everybody on the floor.

 ABC - The night you murdered love (The cheer chic remix)
     A PWL golden oldie. Definitely. Real ABC fans might hate it, I don't.
     Lots of Chic-samples (aaaah-freak out!) and an overall sound that
     keeps you playing the record over and over and over and over and over and over

 Sybil - my love is guaranteed (Red ink mix)
     I've got several mixes of this one, but the red ink mix is the most
     unreserved "steal-another-one's-record" I own, or even know! It's got the
     bassline and percussion of Marrs's Pump up the volume. It even features
     the "pomp op da volume" that Marrs 'loaned' from Eric B and Rakim.

 Blue Mercedes - I want to be your property (Street Latin Wolff USA Mix)
     I don't dare to say what I like most about this song : the bassline.
     I guess that's what is the secret of PWL's success. This one was done
     by Phil Harding and Ian Curnow. Detail: The original mix had 'pump up
     the volume'-samples, and the USA version had them replaced with 'back
     to back'-samples, as they appeared in....

 Ellert - Love lies (House on the (P)hill mix)
     The dub version features the lowest bass of all times. And to be honest,
     it doesn't sound to good to me, in fact. But the 'house on the hill
     mix' is a good one - Phil Harding did an outstanding Job.

 Lou - Rookies revenge (Quantum jump mix)
     This record has something going for it that has nothing to do with
     the sound, namely the sleeve. This Lou - girl (no doubt about that!)
     could have been the reason to buy the record. If she says "jump",
     I'll ask "how high". But as far as sound is concerned, this record is
     an exact copy of "rise to the occasion" by Climie Fisher, or vice versa.
     The instrumental parts can be 'phased' when you have two turntables!
     By the way, did you notice that (Lou's and ) Climie Fisher's drums and
     percussion are the same as Marrs's Pump op the volume, but then slower??

 Jermain Stewart - Say it again
     Again a slow hip-hoppable record. Samples, samples and samples, and some
     Jermaine Stewart as well. This kind of record gets you into a certain
     groove - you just don't want to play faster records any more.

 Supertramp - I'm beggin' you (Mad House Mix)
     One word jumpes into my mind when I think about this record: J-J-J-JACK!!!
     The superlative JACK (your body) version of any song is this MAD house
     mix. Again Phil Harding.

   I could go on for a while - I own almost a hundred PWL/Phil/Ian/Pete
   records. If you managed to read this far then you might like the music I
   do.
   I preferably want to MAIL with a person who has an active behaviour, as
   far as music is concerned. By this I mean that he/she can give me tips on
   exclusives, new mixes, hot (inside) info or news. I do have some resources
   myself, but not abroad. I am planning on MAILing once a week.

   Maybe (miracles still happen, you know) there is someone who has contacts
   within PWL ????? Friends, relatives, mothers-in-law???

   I am looking forward to any reply.

Rod,

 PWL stands for Peter Waterman Limited, which is more or less the same as
 Stock, Aitken and Waterman. I thought that anyone with the same interest
 in that kind of music would know.

 Did you just reply to my note to find out what PWL is or do you know/like
 any of the records I listed??

    I'm sorry Andre, it was only curiosity. I'm not that keen on SAW, but
    thanks for replying. I don't think that you'll get much response in this
    file, the natives like to make fun of poor old Rick Astley for example,
    and find it amusing that his name rhymes with ghastly. 
    
    There is one pure dance band I like that you might too, S-Express.
    That's only because they got some artsy cred by getting Philip Glass to
    remix Hey Music Lover! of course.

    That's what I love about this file, the openness to new ideas, the
    relaxed tolerance of other peoples' preferences, the willingness
    to admit that personal dislikes may just be a blind spot...

    okay Rod, I admit it may just be a blind spot on my part and that
    the crap that is continually churned out by Stock, Aitken & Waterman 
    just does not appeal to me personally :-)
    
    But there again I'm a tolerant person.

Rod,

 An attempt to go back to the roots of this topic: you stated that there is
 little chance of finding people with similar music interests as me IN THIS
 FILE. Do you, or anybody reading this note, know of a conference where to
 post my request?

 As for Rick Astley, I must say that it's not the singers/groups I like in
 particular. It's the way the songs are produced and mixed that attracts me.
 For instance, the record by Supertramp (In Dutch we sometimes call the group
 'Superramp', which means 'Super Disaster" in our language) does not sound
 like Supertramp at all; in fact, their fans probably hate that record.

 Furthermore, I want to stress the fact that PWL records can be split into
 two main categories. The one is the type I like, desribed and buy. The other
 kind is -strangely enough- the more commercially succesful kind. I am talking
 about the Kylie Minogue-sort of record. That kind features the cold, poing-
 poing-poing bassline, instead of the bwoooom-bwooom-bwooom bass I like so
 much. I can imagine that y'all are not too fond of those songs. And because
 they have more (Hitparade) success, PWL/SAW is most of the time associated
 with that kind of record !!!!

 I hope I managed to make my point clear.

    Not that I know much or indeed like the music you have described,
    
    You may(not) wish to know that my mate 'Hoss' (Rob Nicholls) along
    with 'Flip' 'Froggy' and 'Jelly Beane' (SP) make up a bunch mixers
    called the 'Federation' .Why all these silly names, nearly as stupid
    as Stock Aitken and Dennis Waterman :-)
    
    I must admit at my other halves 21st a little while ago 'Hoss' (as
    in that american 'Spag' Wester series - the name of which eludes
    me) did get a good responce from all generations there until he
    dropped his trousers to expose a pair of very silly surf' shorts.

    SAW as producers don't impress me that much really - if you want
    good producers try Alan Parsons or for dance music there is none
    better than Trevor Horn (now if he could only get along with the
    groups he produces).
    
    Isn't the new Sigue Sigue Sputnik by SAW? - Not that impressive.

  SSS by SAW = CRAP, I agree. But to say that Trevor Horn is the best
  producer for dance music is not my opinion. He did some great things,
  allright, but he's not the best.

  Allthough I could not name the best.....
