| Most of my adolescence was spent bopping along to Depeche Mode,
Yazoo and other such bands. Its very good to see Artist/Musicisians
develop in time, especially when they become famous quickly and
at tender ages.
Depeche Modes early material may seem dated now, however I can
return to it over and over again, it still seems as fresh now
as the first time I listened."I Just Can't Get Enough".
I must be over the hill, talking like this and still only 22.

re. -1 the old stuff is good but the new stuff shows such maturation
that is so uncommon in this media. Where most early 80s dance/synth

into the premere dark/dance/industrial band.
Has anyone picked-up the double live album '101' yet - I will today.

I did buy the said recording last night and I think it is good.
Takes a few listens though. All of the tracks are cover versions
and are sort-of-slow (slightly 'MOR' for Mr Gore) I think they must
be old songs as I don't know them!
Summary; if you like the Mode when theyr'e slower and deeper,
then I think you'd like this work.

Hi Dave - yup, I don't mind a bit of DM, I like mostly their very
early poppy stuff, but also like some of the 'slower, darker' numbers,

have any of their records. They do some interesting stuff with strange
percussives which I like, too.

| Will ,
Yes it is him from DM and the E.P. is called 'Counterfeit'.
It is , after careful listening, very good ,in my opinion!
Right, RECOIL: There is another chap from DM who works away from
the band called Alan Wilder. He's released stuff under the name
of RECOIL. The first 'album' was just called 1 + 2. The second
is called 'HYDROLOGY'(3 + 4) .The material is not structured in 3-4
minute song format, rather as pieces of music that fade into each
other! Now this stuff takes some listening but bearing in mind
that he is the only clasically trained pianist in DM. It isn't
rubbish in my view.(I found it under the 'new-age music' section!!)
Which is where they put stuff that can't be clasified!
So there you have it Will.

Phew that was close Michael ( "only joking" ..GOOD JOB!!)
OK YOU don't like DM ,but (another famous "but" Linda!) unlike
manufactured,pre-packaged-plastic pop they are still an INDIE band.
This means they don't have the usual "you release records when
we say so" contract. Leaving them to produce the sort of material
that they want to, when they want to.
"DECENT music" .
WHAT is decent music???????? For example I KNOW that some of the
records/discs in my very varied collection you probably like!
And vice-versa.
I LIKE DM for their unmainstream sounds (the result of going
out and sampling interesting things) and their often simplistic
approach to music.
I like (e.g.) Suzanne Vega for the way she calms me down
and makes me feel sooooooooooo good.
Do you see what I mean , the best way of getting 'use' out
of music is to glean off what you need/desire for your own personal
use.( I may start another topic on this!)
BTW, has anyone played PIMPF at full volume? The Mode sounding
classical or what. (They should have a go at avant-garde film music!)

| Re Personal Jesus vid and song:
The video is a nicely filmed load of sexist crap. I mean, the boys
swank around in their cowboy outfits and model girls wriggle around on
beds in a whorehouse. More suited to Whitesnake, where at least we'd
know it was a joke. As to the song, .43 hit it on the nose.
Sorry.

| Hello Rod,
I have to say that for the video I agree , they've never made
particularly good vids . Truth is some are bloody awful, you think
this one's bad!! They are , as you pointed out , well filmed
though.
The track isn't,( in my view either ) their best.
It lacks the melodies that "Shake the disease" had and it lacks
the odd percussive sounds that "Master & servant" blasted out!
I must say the LTD edition , which has been reworked, is a great
improvement. One track falls into "industrial-house"!!!!! This I
like.
David.
BTW: Rod ,if you like the "C" Twins you must like "This Mortal Coil?

RE: 65 & 66
I don't know about PJ not having that hard percussion. The first time
I played my 12" version I had the volume (my favourite switch) turned
up a little and the way those drums blasted out was real impressive.
It's really quite a hard song in my opinion, blow's Shake The Disease
into next week.
Although I must agree, Master And Servant is still hard to beat, and
Everything Counts as well.

David - I had heard that '101' was going to be released on vid.
when the movie came out but here in the states I have yet to see
it.
And about rare DM stuff Sire in the states has put out now 4 (?!)
promo only cd eps of remixes available on these cds - off the
top of my head they are 'Everything Counts' (3 mixes), Strangelove
(4 mixes), Behind the Wheel/Rt. 66 (6 mixes), Never Let me Down
Again (4 mixes) - several of these mixes are only available on this
format (cd) here...

ps - about the vids. - Never Let Me Down Again is a _very_ good
video - and very well shot also - I think that their videos are
pariodies of sexist videos.
I find it interesting that not too many people know what the song
"Never Let Me Down Again" is about - anybody here have a conclusion?

very odd 'incidentals' wizzing around in a more distant layer!
All-in-all I like this more than PJ , it has more tune to it.
It has a snare drum that is close to "house" in pattern and sound!
It sounds close to New Order too, but that's OK by me!!

Subject: DEPECHE MODE'S VIOLATOR
Date: 5 Feb 90 20:54:58 GMT
Hello all!
I've just recieved an advance copy of the new Depeche Mode album and I thought
I would fill you guys in on what to expect. In addition, I have news about
promotional items and UK releases for collectors.
First, as I'm sure you all know already the album is called "Violator". The
cover artwork is a flower on a black background. The stem of the rose is
broken and the word Violator is inserted horizontaly within the break.
The song titles are: World Of My Eyes Enjoy The Silence
Sweetest Infection Policy Of Truth?
Personal Jesus R3
Guilt ?????
Reality ?????
The album was produced by Flood and Depeche. Naturally, the import CD and the
US (most likely) will have extra tracks. The extra trax will be:
Memfisto
Sibling
Dangerous
and one other.
As far as the new single (Enjoy The Silence) goes, as always, there will be
many releases.
UK US
Enjoy The Silence 7" 7BONG18 There will be no US 7"
Enjoy The Silence 12" 12BONG18 Enjoy The Silence (6 mixes w/dub)
Enjoy The Silence Lim.12" L12BONG18 Enjoy The silence USPROMO CD 3mixes

Enjoy The Silence Lim CD XLCDBONG18
Enjoy The Silence CASS CBONG18
Enjoy The Silence BOX VIO-BOX---PROMO ONLY BOX LIMITED TO 150 INCLUDING
LP, CD, CASSETTE, POSTER, TOUR SCHEDULE, STICKERS, AND PRESS RELEASE.
The first UK 12" is the Francis Kervokian mix
The second UK 12" is (I think) the Daniel Miller and Flood Mix.
The third UK 12" is the Holger Hiller, Adrien Sherwood, Gareth Jones, MillerMix
The UK CD issues will match the three 12"s and The US releases will have them
in different orders.
For Collectors, it should be known that there is a Classical Mix of Enjoy The
Silence that they decided not to release. It's only available format is an
advance cassette. While I dont have an exact #, I'm sure only 200-300 were
made.
Sire and Mute UK are planning a big promotional push for the new release.
March 13, is going to be "DEPECHE MODE DAY" and Promotional T-shirts are being
made that say "March 13th" in 10 Different languages.
Mode are coming to LA in March to do some publicity and then will kick off a 69
city world tour. 24 of those shows will be in the US and the US portion kicks
off on June 2nd.
As far as the album goes, I've been listening to it since I started writing
this. Naturally, Its brilliant. The production on the album sounds quite
good. Unfortunalty, my copy was not made off of a disc so the quality is a bit
lacking. In any case, the album is very very rich sounding. Minimal like PJ
but very deep and warm. An album like only Mode can do. Not like those
wanna-be Mode clones like Camaflage. Cheers Mode!
The official release date for violator UK is February 27th.
US is March 13th.
The release date for Enjoy the Silence UK is today.
The limited formats will follow one week after today.
The release date for Enjoy The Silence US is February 27th.
Does Anybody Know the story on the Japanese "chronicals I" CD set??
Well, If anybody has any questions of would like to chat, drop me some mail.

| Thanks to the last note, I've now got the 3 CD's of Enjoy the Silence.
Mephisto and Sibeling are piano tracks, the first being an EPIC
piece of music that can hold it's head up as an exellent composition
anywhere!
The standard CD features 7" & 12" mixes, a dub & Sibeling.
The limited (yellow cover) has a mega house-type-cum-"I Start
Counting" feel to it . A Hymn version (slow) and a jangly guitar
mix.
The Extra limited (black cover) is brilliant (even my other-half
loves it who normally dislikes this band!) It is 4 mixes which all
run into each other. One is an orchestral version(samples I imagine)
Worth getting if you like the track.
Its good to see that each track (there are 10!), is different to
the next, they completely re-work them, giving, I think, good value.

FRAYED KNOT Steve I like it too much.
I used to have a good bootleg of them singing "The Price of Love"
which is, I think, a Everly Brothers song!!
What is the general opinion of the album??.
I thought at first that it was a lazy album but it is full of melodies
that lay under the surface layers of sound.
I noticed that they've used Vince Clark's favorite effect, long
reverb, on it. (Esp' on Blue Dress).
Still gloomy with hints of industrial and sparse arrangements with
no hype or concessions to "current chart fashions".
Which is just how I like them!

The "B-side" track can only be described as deep house and it's

, Happiest Girl and Sea of Sin . They seem to put a lot of time into

I bought the Ltd Edition last night. HMV priced it at 11.99 !!!
Tower had it at 3.99 . The young lad behind the counter was obviously
new and just pulled it out of a box. The guy showing him what to do
seemed uncomfortable with the sale. I heard him say as I left,

The mix isn't that good but then again I don't think the normal single is one of
their strongest anyway.
12" remix was described as "strictly scarce" in last week's NME.
It's funny, because in Manchester the copies are selling for 11.99 but these
have import stickers on them. Are these stores pulling a fast one and putting
these stickers on themselves?

World in my Eyes is a good LTD . 1st version is v. odd. 2nd one is
funky/house/weird and they've re-worked "Happiest Girl"
The original 12" is very different to the single as well.

I just went into HMV at lunchtime and found the limited edition for
12.49, I then went to Our Price and bought it for 3.29. I then went
back to HMV and asked them about it, the girl serving was mystified
about it, apparently several people had questioned it and 4 poor mugs
had bought it while she was serving. She said she thought that the
difference would be that HMV's were imported although when we compared
the two there was no difference at all, all the numbers etc were the
same. She said she'd try and find out about it, it seems to me someone
has made a mistake. I doubt whether this will do Depeche Mode any good
either as sales of an "imported" record won't be counted in the charts
(I think, not sure) and I doubt whether they'll get any more money.

Well I've been to 4 DM gigs before this one but last night's
was the best!
Very good visuals . Two HUGE projector screens lowered behind
them. The images were fab, really appealed to an artist like me.
For a sequencer-based band they acheived a very live show, you
can always tell when an act have put/are putting a lot of work
into a performance.
Martin Gore proved that he's a competent guitar player with
a couple of accoustic songs, (I Want You Now, World Full of Nothing)
I've seen Prince, Janet Jackson, Bowie, and Cher this year
but none of them managed to get the crowd going like DM did.
Real value for money. Thanx Mode!!!

366.151 | | CHEFS::PRICET | Shaking The Disease.. | Wed Nov 21 1990 09:54 | 43 |
| Well I went to see DM last night and I was just a bit impressed, they
ran through so many hits and still left so many out. Dave I think they
must have done a different set to the one you saw as Martin Gore sang
Here Is The House and Sweetest Perfection and not I Want You Now and
World Full Of Nothing.
Better start from the begining
Electribe 101 came on at 7.35 and played for 35 minutes going through
all their singles, they sounded like a danced up version of DM with a
female singer. She had a good voice but at times I couldn't help but
thinking that they'd be better off being instrumental as it didn't seem
to work, then again at times it really worked well.
Not long after DM came on and proceeded to go through most of their
Violator album and many of their old singles although not necessarily
the most predictable ones, for instance they left out Just Can't Get
Enough which I was glad about since its such a predictable song for
them to finish with. Dave Gahan really worked overtime with the hip
gyrations and poses with the mic stand, he was almost like a
characature of himself in previous years with plenty of crotch grabbing
etc.
The audience was very different to previous years, much wider based, I
was thinking before they came on how much the audience had changed
since I first saw them in about 1983/4. It was amusing to see some of
the innocent faced 14 year olds singing "Dominations the name of
the game in bed or in life its all just the same except with one you're
fulfilled at the end of the day, lets play Master & Servant..", not to
mention some of the othe songs. DM subvert English youth =;-)
Martin Gore has been playing an increasing role in the stage show over
the years, when I first saw them, in his solo slot he was obviously
extremely nervous but last night he couldn't have been more at home doing
2 solo guitar driven songs Sweetest Perfection and Here is the House not to
mention some of the times he wandered around the stage with his guitar.
I could go on for ages about the wonderful backdrops, lights, videos
they used but its time I got back to work.

About 'Halo' - there has been a US promo out for about a year? - anyway
it has just the lp mix - although there is talk about a bunch of
re-mixes (which I would like to see - but this late I sort of doubt
it).
About X1 and X2 - on the high-end the sets are going for $100 apiece
over here (the US) - on the low end, however, they can be had for
$65 each (that is what I am trying for) - the retail in Japan is
about $40 - so if you know anyone over there...

| Re. -1
What format are you looking for CD or vinyl, The Vinyl version
is one sided with a rose etched on the B side, I dont know how limited
these were but you may still be able to order the CD.
There is also a Blue Vinyl Test pressing of "The Freshground Mix"
of strangelove (The one with the Cameo samples) floating about,
The last listed price for this was 45, So if you see this one
going cheap BUY IT..!!!!!.

I've seen the reviews for the singles CD-Boxset . Since there's more
than enough room are the B-sides the 12" b-sides or the 7" ?

Having now seen the new Singles boxes, I'm none the wiser.
Beautifully presented they might be, but completely lacking info'
on the outside to tell you what's inside! The only way I'd buy these,
(there's 3!), is if I had the dosh to spare(27 each!), and if there
were new versions of the tracks. I think I'd rather buy the Japanese
imports: X1 and X2!!
Re-packaging doesn't offer anything to the punter's collection.
You can't move in Virgin for box sets, Ltd Editions and
Complete Works". It's difficult to find the new releases!
I have also heard that DM are taking a year off!

366.165 | Go for it | XSTACY::NBLEHEIN | | Mon Dec 16 1991 17:25 | 20 |
| Get the third box set as there are a *lot* of extra tracks in there.
The "Question of Lust" CD-single contains over 50 minutes of music .
Also "Little 15" was only ever released here on import so I would
imagine it's a little difficult to get it and all the extra tracks that
go with it. If you think 27 is a lot to spend (each) then take a look
at the prices of X1 and X2 (although in fairness they will have a
fairly high rarity value around here in time to come) .
I think if I were you I'd buy the third one (or write to Santa) ,
think about the second one and ignore the first one . After all stuff
like "Never Let Me Down Again" is far more accomplished. Come to think
of it , it's possible (only just ) that "Strangemixes" are on the
"Strange Love" CD-single as well as the Maxi and Midi mixes.
RE . a year off, as far as I know they're on it . Personally I'll be
very upset if they don't release anything next year. I reckon you'll
see something in Sept. or so.

| Anyone heard the latest offering from Alan Wilder's RECOIL
Its a single called "Faith Healer". The CD has quite a few Re-Mixes
of the song on it (About 5 or 6) but that's MUTE for you....!!!

Yeah
Faith Healer - I love it, (then I would!)
7 mixes, most very different.
He's grade eight classic pianist so he gets quite interesting tunes out
off the synths.
His earlier stuff was
1&2 - samples of DM restructured into weird new age.
Hydrology(3&4) good chill out music, no DM samples or vocals(as such).
Bloodline (5&6 - is the new Album and my pennies won't stretch yet!
This has vocalists from Nitzer Ebb, and the girl from The Curve.

spookily enough, i was just playing "songs..." this morning and think
it's their best....but having seen them on tv doing their latest live
thing (directed by anton corbin?) i wouldn't want to see them in the
flesh, so to speak....
as a secret in-the-closet sparks fan (there, i've just outted myself)
i was impressed that whatisface, the chap who writes all the songs,
released a cover of a sparks song
...didn't like what they did to 'in your room' though, for the single

| Chris,
No big surprise. The guy has been living the Rock 'n' Roll cliche a
little too much of late. The drug stuff is no new news.
As for the arrest business - I assume he has been busted and is going
for the - "It's a fair cop guv, take pity on me" approach (that sounds more
cynical than it is meant too)
Stretch.

| According to the fountain of all knowledge (teletext), Davey G was found in
his hotel room after having collapsed due to taking heroin and cocaine.
He was rushed to hospital, and basically the rozzers nicked him when he
woke up for possession.
dickie.
