I have both Propaganda albums, "A Secret Wish" and "Wishful Thinking"
on CD, although I've only seen the second of those in London, so
I don't know how available it is. Both the CD version and LP version
of that album have the same note saying that the album is a limited
edition. I also have 12"s of P-Machinery, Dr. Mabuse and Duel (which
has the absolute best version of the track on it).
I have the Act CD "Laughter Tears and Rage", plus a mini-cd of "I
can't Escape" and a 12" of "Snobbery and Decay". Given the fact
that both bands are ZTT, there are probably several other remixes
etc., that I don't have.
Propaganda are far better than Act, although any band with Claudia
Brucken is worth listening to. Did anyone see either band live?
I haven't heard anything about Propaganda getting back together
- I had thought that the split had been pretty final. But I'd
certainly like to hear more of them and see them too if possible.
Does anyone have any more information on what's gone on/going on
with Propaganda?

As far as the cd of A Secret Wish there are two different versions
the UK and the the US the Uk has different mixes and is longer
(probably the better of the two) - the US version is the same as
the vinal version - but a must-have if you are a fanatic.
There are also two Japanese 3" cds of different remixes that I
have been trying desperatly to get my hands on (to no avail) -
imports are getting harder to get in the US.
For Act I have the two cd eps and LT&R - although I would have
to say that Act aren't as good as Propaganda the long mixes of
I can't escape from you and Snobbery & Decay are very close.

re. -1
one is 'Snobbery & Decay' with 3 versions of S&D and the track Poison
(I think)
the other is (and I useally get the title wrong) - 'I Can't Escape
From You' or maybie 'You Won't forget Me' - it has the Smiths tune
on it 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now' on it - I had heard that
the 'Chance' ep was being advertised in the UK music rags but haven't
seen it.
- Both of the above are UK imports.

What's the scoop on Wishfull Thinking?
I only have the LP A Secret Wish and I think it's exellent.
I have tried to get Wishfull Thinking but can never find it!
I have also tried to find Act but, again, to no avail.
I heard Act on the radio a while ago now, and, although not as good
as Propaganda, I still thought they were very good.

Wishful Thinking is a disc of radical re-mixes of songs off the
'Secret Wish' disc - it is available on lp and cd. The Act disc
'Laughter, Tears & Rage' is also out on the above formats - it's
very good - but not as good as Propaganda.
While I was in NYC I picked up one of the two japanese 3" Propaganda
cds (the first and only one I have ever seen) - it has:
P: Machinery (Polish) 9:18
P: Machinery (Passive) 3:?
Frozen Faces (remix) 5:?
all this for a steep $22 - but for some of the best music ever....

| PROPAGANDA
A highly acclaimed band, much deservedly so.
Extremely (well) produced. I had the pleasure of seeing them live
in '86(I think) at Salford University.
I have a pretty full collection of their stuff. In typical ZTT fashion
there exists more often than not at least two different 12" mixes
of the same single and these are much sought after collector's items
which can fetch quite a lot. Refer to Record Collector Magazine.
The afore-said magazine recently printed a discography for
Propaganda/Act and I will willingly type this on these notes if
requested.
They were produced by Trevor Horn(he was the Buggles in"Video Killed
The Radio Star")and Stephen Lipson who have both recently worked
with The Pet Shop Boys ("Left To My Own Devices"), Simple Minds
("Belfast Child" etc) and Paul McCartney.
Propaganda got into a bit of trouble with copyright laws with there
album track "Dream Within A Dream" which is an Edgar Allen Poe poem
put to music.
Claudia Brucken got hitched to Paul Morley (he's the one that writes
all those cryptic sleeve notes), left the band and formed Act with
Thomas Leer.
Suzanne Freytag has left the band completely, and the two remaining
members have taken on an American female vocalist and are currently
signed to TEN RECORDS - no release as of yet.

| ACT
As I mentioned in the previous reply, Act is made up of former
Propaganda band member Claudia Brucken and Thomas Leer who was a
former solo Jazz Musician.
Produced in the same excellent vein as Propaganda, they have a good
following although they have had little or no chart success.
Currently on the ZTT label, they have released numerous remixes
of the same single and these, like Propaganda singles fetch grand
amounts.
Compact Disc "Laughter Tears And Rage" has an extra track "The Third
Planet". All singles released so far have spawned two 12" remixes.
ZTT planned to release "Chance" as a single and indeed went as far
as promoting the record by releasing 12"s of the track to DJs.
This was however so far never been officially released and it is
worth a bomb!
I have two copies of the 12" remix "Absolutely Immune II" - anybody
interested in a copy ?

The record is a 12" on Emergency Records (EMDS 6562), issued in 1986,

| The Holly Johnson (Frankie Goes To Hollywood) V. ZTT case set legal
precedence, and because ZTT lost the case I can't see them trying
to force Propaganda back into the studio. This assumption rings
true because in my correspondence with ZTT press office, they spoke
of Propaganda being signed up to TEN Records. The line up now being
Michael Mertens, Ralf Dorper and an american female vocalist. Claudia
has stayed loyal to ZTT having married into the company. Suzanne
Freytag has apparently gone back to the jewelry trade in Germany....
so I'm afraid it may just be wishful thinking that they were back
recording in their old vein with ZTT.

brilliant track in the style of Propaganda.
I think they disbanded soon after due to lack of success with this

It wouldn't surprise me if Michael Mertens was the only surviving member.
Apparently the new girl singer is from The States and she doesn't half
sound like Madonna. I still can't get hold of the record, but my record
shop says they will have it on Wednesday. They are on Key 103 (local Radio
station) tomorrow night, which someone is taping for me...Hopefully!
Heard an excerpt from what must have been the 12". Long instrumental start,
very guitary and has a really modern feel to it. From the bit I heard, I
like it very much.

| The only surviving members of Propaganda are Michael Mertens and Ralf Dorper,
and even Ralf is now only a "ghost member" (still works for a bank in
Dusseldorf). New recruits are a female singer called Betsy and two ex-Simple
Minds members Brian and Derek. Derek played bass on P-Machinery and also
toured with the original line-up.
Don't sound too vastly different from the original Propaganda, probably
because Michael Mertens is let loose on percussion again.
Howard Jones was also involved in the new single "Heaven Give Me Words"
Producers are Ian Stanley and Chris Hughes (Tears For Fears producers).
Me likes very much !

I am very disappointed.

| Give it another few listens. To tell you the truth I felt the same way on first
hearing but I now really rate this album. I think that an album you like on
first hearing tends to be one that you tire of easily. This one grows on you.
I personally think it's a bit of a masterpiece - full of wonderfully textured
sounds. Don't you think the final track (La Morte, Il Carne et Il Diablo)
sounds rather like the theme tune to the LLoyd George series ?? Stirring stuff !
I reckon How Much Love is a potential single but needs slightly remixing or
shortening.
The music is in the same vein as the early Propaganda stuff except a lot poppier

| I've been told Radio 1 keep playing it, and that it is due for re-release,
I suppose probably 1st/2nd week in the new year. Don't know whether its (yet
another) re-mix though or whether its the original mix.
