351.0. "Frank Zappa and the Mothers" by SUBURB::TANNERM (The Grand Wazoo) Fri Feb 17 1989 17:11

Are there any Zappa fans out there?

I am wondering as I have a fair collecyion of his albums, but there
are several more that I would like.

Does anybody else have a shed load of Zappa or Mothers albums, or
    know of a good source?

Although I don't have any Zappa albums to trade, I always listened
to my brothers. I do have to say that I think Zappa is one of
    the most underrated guitarists.
Anybody who can get past his popular songs, and completely listen
to some of his albums will find a very talented musician. The
first example that comes to mind is "Pojama People", the guy can
knock your socks off with his guitarwork.

I have one or two, including the 'Live at the Filmore' album
(which it is a federal offense to whistle, I understand).

Which ones are you after? If they're out of print, maybe I could taape
    em for you.

The programme from his 1988 UK tour had a complete LP/CD discography.
If you like, I could get a photocopy for you?

I have 'Joes Garage' (I, II+III), 'One Size Fits All' and 'Live
At The Roxy' on LP, and various bits and bobs on tape. He's just
    great for me.

If you want to here just frank and his guitar, then "shut up and
play yer guitar" is superb. There is a great imitation of santana
on this called "variations on santana chord sequence".The album
"guitar" is a good buy.My personal fave however is "Them or Us"
which features steve vai and dweezil zappa, this album has a great
cover of the allman brothers "whipping post"

Does anyone have a list of what Zappa is available on CD *in the UK*.

There is a note in the U.S. CD notesfile, but this bears little relation
to what's available over here. I've noticed a few "two albums on one CD"
releases (which is good news on the value for money front), but I want
someone to tell me that 'One Size Fits All' is out on CD before I buy
a replacement for my worn vinyl copy.

    Optimistically yours,

    Derek.

Great to find a Zappian note in UK_MUSIC !

I think I definitely have every official record or CD from 'Freak
out' to 'Broadway the hard way' and am still longing for more
    to come .

Are you aware of the fact that there is a sort of conceptual
continuity in this note as you can find them in his records ?

    	> 351.12

One size fits all is out as a double CD with 'Overnight sensation'
    	(remember? DINAH-MOE-HUM DINAH-MOE-HUM WHERE'S THIS DINAH-MOE

I will be avidly reading other replies to this note because I also
am waiting for 'You can't do that on stage anymore part III'. It
was due out by March in the U.K. !

Is anybody aware of any plans for the man to tour the UK this year?
I'm only being helpful, as I haven't managed to see him since the
"Ship arriving too late to save a drowning witch" tour.

The bottom line with Frank is that he tours the UK once in a while,
and no more than that (about every 3/4/5 years). As he played here
last year, I would think the chances of UK outings this year are
slim. But, we live in hope ..... nothing announced/rumoured yet.

Does anybody know about any new F.Z. videocassettes ?

Inside the sleeve of the 'Broadway the hard way ' record I found
an advert for 3 Videos. One is supposed to be the 'true story of
200 Motels', another is a full-version of 'Baby snakes' plus a new
one of which I can't remember the name.

Last time I came to London in December all I could find was
'200 Motels' and 'Does Humor belong to music ?'. Anything new out
    there ?

351.28The Real Frank Zappa BookCLADA::SOCONNORThu Sep 13 1990 18:2511
I'm nearing the end of "The Real Frank Zappa Book" which seems to be newly out
in paperback. A very enjoyable read so far, eventhough I have no Zappa music at
all; I'll try and change that soon though.... it's such a huge catalogue
though, where to start and what's available ( in Galway absolutely nothing )
could be the problem.......

Anyone else read this? It's a very unpretentious amusing all round good book,
I was very pleasantly surprised,

Stephen

As you know, FZ's catalogue is quite vast. If you'd like some
recommendation as to what to start with, it might help to know
what you like or what you would like.

BTW, there's an entire conference on him; STKCSC::ZAPPA, hit KP7...

351.30Zappa BookGALVIA::STEPHENSI'm Pat Stephens. Who the hell are you?Fri Sep 14 1990 09:1915
Hi Stephen,

I've read Zappa's book too, in Eason's one Saturday afternoon! At the risk of
souding cliched - "I couldn't put it down". Yes, a thumping good read.

I particularly liked the transcript of his London Obscenity Trial. Now this
is what biographies SHOULD be all about.

Also the story about the refusal of the nurse to register Zappa's son with
the name Dweezil, so they called him John George Henry, or something normal.
Nevertheless, he became known by the nickname Dweezil. This was all very well
until, around the age of five, he found out that that was not really his name.
According to the book, he went into a sulk until they had it legally changed.

Geez...I'm beginning to wonder IF I'm living in the same Galway as
some of my fellow noters in here. I willin' to bet that I could go
down town today and come back with at least one Zappa album ;-)

But seriously, if the guy in the shop claims me has no FZ then tell
him to get off his fat a$$ an order some for you!

Well...I was disappointed with the book. The PMRC stuff and what names he
should call his kids were not the sort of anecdotes I was
expecting; I would have liked to have read more about the bands rather
    than his family life.

As for what LP/CD to start from...I would recommend "One Size Fits All",
    available on CD.

I heard that he had been under the knife and all was well, however he
had to postpone a Frankfurt gig with his new 'new music' ensemble

Since then, I've neither read not heard anything. Has anyone else?
