326.0. "Soundalikes (pap from the Beeb)" by MVSUPP::SYSTEM (Dave Carr 845-2317) Thu Jan 26 1989 17:56

I jumped in the car to go home for lunch today, and Radio 1 sprang to life (?)
as usual (at my age I ought to know better).

A record came on which initially sounded very familiar...

"Ah", I thought, "Joan Armatrading's 'Me Myself I'".

This moment of anticipated pleasure was then shattered as the drums and the
rest of the band came in, and there followed a rough approximation of the
Harmonica solo from (gulp) "Kharma Chameleon".

But no, it wasn't Culture Club either. Three minutes of the usual musical
wallpaper stuff followed, called something like "Liberty Town", artistes
unknown.

On arriving home I switched-on the TV ready for the lunchtime news, and
the same track was being played simultaneously on this-weeks-Pebble-Mill
low-budget-TV-show (whatever it's now called). The singer had the sort of
hairstyle that you get for nothing prior to cranial surgery.

Looks like the BBC are plugging this one...a shame it's so derivative/mediocre!
Probably ideal for tonight's "Wogan"!

Anyone else got any examples of bits of records that sound like others
(as distinct from "sampled" from others)..?

That thing by Freiheit (?). You know that vocal thing that sounds
just like Paul Mcartney but isn't. Well, the record sounds identical
to a track out a few years ago that was a hit. But I can't place
it. Anyone else had that sense of deja vu on this one?

It reminded me of Paul M's tune with the cartoon of Ruper Bear or
something. Frog Chorus? Anyway, maybe not the same tune, but close
    enought for a court-case.

Freiheit = Cindy Lauper's 'All through the night'

Try singing the words from one over the other - perfect fit !

    Cheers,

I thought it sounded like Maccas "Pipes of Peace". Yes?

OK, this has been bothering me for a while. What does the opening of
Enya's Oronoco Flow sound like? I think it reminds me of a terrible
    '60's song but...

Carol Decker claims it sounds like 'China in your hand' by T'Pau.
I don't agree - but they do both open with pizzicato strings.

A bit of Buddy holly there too...

Some good soundalikes for you all.

RED LORRY YELLOW LORRY's "Only Dreaming" has a bass line just like
LED ZEPPELIN's "When The Leeve Breaks".

GEORGE MICHEALS's "Faith" is a direct rip-off of THE CURE's "Close
    	To Me".

A very early SIMPLE MINDS song called "Changeling" was inspired
(I'm sure of this) by the theme tune for that old kiddies programme
The Wombles, you can sing The Womble theme perfectly to the first
    	verse of "Changeling".

    All together now .....

    		"Underground, overground
    		 wombleing free
the wombles of Wimbledon common are we
making good use of the things that we find
things that the everyday folks leave behind"

Huh! Well saying I can remember the words. I remember when I was a
    boy .......
