311.1 | I prefer them live | RTOIC2::HHALISCHAK | Strangeways here we come... | Thu Jan 12 1989 16:19 | 8 |
| I only came across the GO-BETWEENS a few months ago, when I saw
them live here in a small Munich venue, a really enjoyable gig,
though I didn't like the album that much, a bit too smooth, compared
to their live appearance.
But certainly worth watching out for.
So long, Hannelore

Any time i have seen The GO-BETWEENS they have been very good too.
I have seen them in Glasgow and Edinburgh and their playlist was
reasonably varied from many albums.
Did they play most of the tracks from the "16 lovers lane" album
or was it a fair mixture of other songs..
Again i must say i like the album , i think it has good atmosphere
though i wouldn't say it is their best by a long way . ' Liberty
Belle ' and 'Springhill Fair ' are both great..

311.3 | all mixed up | RTOIC1::HHALISCHAK | Strangeways here we come... | Fri Jan 13 1989 08:52 | 10 |
| Yeah, they did a mixture of old and new songs, can't remember the
titles though.
What was really nice was that the woman (what's her name?) actually
got on the stage with the support band for a couple of songs, and
also the other way round, one of the musicians of the support band
joined the GO-BETWEENS for one song too. That's the way bands should
exchange and work together...

| What are the band like? Do they appealto us Smiths/New Order type
of fans? The NME often raves about them.

(Sorry its a bit late , but Iv'e only recently started using notes)
GO-BETWEENS INFO
Well I don't know if they'd appeal to all Smiths/New Order fans
I'm fond of both those bands and the Gobs (as they're known here Down
Under)but they dont sound anything like them really - maybe a little
like the Smiths occasionally.Their early albums (Send Me A Lullaby ,
Before Hollywood as well as early singles like "Lee Remick" "I Need Two
Heads" were pretty heavily influenced by American bands of the late
SEventies - ie:Talking Heads and Television , in fact they still
produce songs (try "The House that Jack Kerouac Built" from 1987's
"Tallulah") that sound unusually like the late & lamented (sob)
Television without being obviously derivative.
I dont know if this happens anywhere else but it seems that whenever
they play in Sydney Robert Forster (Singer,Guitarist) seems to find it
neccesary to dress up a little - last time I saw them earlier this year
supporting R.E.M he was wearing a very fetching frock and lipstick.
There is a lot of humour in their music which might not seem
immediately obvious to the casual listener.
Well there you go , better not write to much in case I stuff it up -
I've never written a reply before -anything could happen!
Cheers
Philip.

311.6 | Youch...Smiths type titles! | BAHTAT::STURROCK | Times tide will smother me... | Mon Jul 31 1989 19:03 | 9 |
| I'm probably way out on this but...
I've been trying to find the name of a band that did a song called
(or with the lyrics:) 'Why do you have to go out with him, when
you could go out with me' and The Go-Betweens name rings a bell...
can anyone help?

What is Robert Forster's (He's the tall one isn't he) natural
Hair colour. On the cover of T a l u l a h he's blonde.
Everywhere else he's dark haired.
I would ask his mother, but I lost her address.
As regards Go-betweens/Television. One of the Go-betweens guitar
sounds is almost identical to Tom Verlaine, but apart from that
I feel that there's not much connection.

311.8 | probably dark haired | OZROCK::TURNER | The Cane Toads Are Coming | Thu Apr 19 1990 14:44 | 14 |
| Forster is a very strange and twisted individual. According to an
interview I heard on the radio a while back with Amanda and Lindy
he was also rather difficult to get along with on tour or perhaps
they said he made touring interesting implying the above. The colour
of his hair was the least of his problems (although I believe he was
naturally dark) one time I remember him coming back on stage for an
encore with lipstick drawings on his chest. He didn't mind the
odd bit of make-up on his face either!
Brian
ps I presume everyone knows the band has more or less called it a
day after a very interesting 10 yrs.

as my previous reply here was wildly incorrect (it should be in the
Game Theory topic if there is one, I've deleted it !
Here's what it should have said :-
There's been nothing added here for a while, but in case there are any
Go-Betweens fans still out there you may like to know that Grant
has worked with Steve Kilbey (of The Church) on a project called Jack
Frost. They've released two albums, 'Jack Frost' and 'Snow Job', these
are both guitar based albums, with 'Snow Job' being the 'rockier' (if
there is such a word) of the two. I haven't heard Grant's 'Horsebreaker
Star' but those who have say that some of the tracks on 'Snow Job' are
similar in feel to this album. Grant and Steve share the singing and
guitar and bass parts, all tracks are credited to Jack Frost but it's
not too difficult to tell who wrote what ! Russell Kilbey, Steves
brother does backing vocals....
