287.0. "DR.FEELGOOD" by GLDOA::BOSSONNEY () Thu Dec 08 1988 15:12

Would anyone be interested in giving me some news about Dr.Feelgood?

I have a couple of their records and I really liked their sound.

Does anybody know what happened to Wilko Johnson and Lee Brilleaux
in particular? If I remembered well Wilko left the band and they
    continued without him.
    Where are they now?

Last time I heard of Wilko he was playing with wonderful Ian Dury
    and the Blockheads.

Did Wilko not branch out into a solo career after all this?
Though in the last two years or so he is keeping quiet.

Well Lee Brilleaux was interviewed on my local radio station
a couple of weeks ago.. (Ocean Sound), I think they (Dr.Feelgood)
    were appearing in Southampton.
Anyway they are still touring, and Lee said something about
getting back to the roots ie. smaller venues/audiences.

I saw them at the Hammersmith Odeon back in 76/77 ish and
I still consider the concert to be the best I have seen for
    excitement.

I have 3 albums, all early ones....they get an airing from
time to time, and are great driving tunes.

Wilko Johnson is still touring, in fact he's playing in Portsmouth soon
but don't know the exact date.

The Feelgood's are also still touring, I've seen them a few times in the
past 4 years and apart from Lee being off the Alcohol (Doctors orders)
they are still as good as they ever were.

stuff, and a new album called 'Classic ??' or summat.

 A quick update :-

Wilco Johnson is playing the 'After Dark' in Reading this coming Friday
or Saturday (pretty sure its Friday though), anyway I'll be there with a few
friends to see what he's like these days.

Wilko Johnson has recently released a new solo album called
'Barbed Wire Blues' which I read a of last night. The review
stated the the album was 'so-so', probably due to the fact
that he was listening to it at four in the afternoon in his
living room and not in concert at midnight.!!! The bass player
from the Blockheads is also on the album and it's Wilko's 1st
studio effort in eight years. There is nothing new or innovative
on the album but if you're a Wilko Johnson fan you'll like it.

A guitarist by the name of Gordon Russell is doing the fretboard
honours these days. I haven't heard a great deal by the current
band, they sound much like any other good R&B Band. Lee Brilleaux
and Wilko Johnson together gave them their identity, raw, aggressive,
R&B stripped down to the bare essentials. Top stuff! Johnson should
never have been given the boot.

I just discovered this entry - any more updates on the band ?

I've been a fan for several years now - saw them in Cambridge around
Christmas '87, in Reading around Christmas '88, fear I'll miss out this
Christmas. Heard a radio report a while back that they were doing
something like 250-300 gigs a year (i.e. SOLID touring).

A brilliant band live, as long as you have 15 pints first.

Saw them last night at Washington Heights in Reading and they were
absolutely wonderful. I would certainly recommend anyone seeing them
live if they get the chance.

The support band, Sarajevo, would good too - although the sound quality
they were given to play with was terrible.

The venue is excellent for smallish bands - not to small, not too
big, and the best bit is they keep the bar open for a couple of hours
    after the show.

    Cheers,

    Spike.

I saw them last night too and I agree with -.1

One of the best bands I've seen for ages.

Couldn't get used to all the long haired heavy metal types walking
    around WAshington Heights though :-).

287.13The Feelgood Factor (new album)WELSWS::HEDLEYLager LoutThu Sep 30 1993 14:2620
They have a new album out, `The Feelgood Factor'. I haven't heard it yet,
but this is what the review in Q magazine says:

"Dr. Feelgood's recent albums seemed to have existed merely as excuses to
tour, the spark having gone out but the band still performing almost 250
shows a year. Enjoyable though these albums sometimes were, they failed
to add anything to the band's reputation. With The Feelgood Factor they
may change all that; it's as centred and driven as any album they've
delivered in 10 years. Excellently produced by Dave Charles and Feelgood
bassist Dave Bronze, the album is largely original material, which for
once stands up alongside the R&B covers the Feelgoods have mainly excelled
with since the departure of Gypie Mayo in 1981. The title track, I'm In
The Mood for You and especially Wolfman Calling are tailor made for frontman
Lee Brilleaux's bemused vocal leerings, his audiable enjoyment of the
proceedings making his illness (he has been diagnosed as suffering from
lymphoma, cancer of the lymph nodes) all the more tragic."

And they give it 4 out of 5.

    Lee Brilleaux is dead!

He collapsed on stage a couple of weeks ago. He had been suffering from
    cancer for quite a while.
