282.0. "Now for something completely different...." by VANGRD::SALLITT (Dave @ ICI,0642432193) Mon Dec 05 1988 20:41

Are you bored with the toy department, Casio-created chart music
scene, but feel you're not old enough to settle for Doonican, Sinatra
    or Perry Como?

If so, do you also wish there was something more than Fleetwood
Mac (as good as they are), or Dire <yawn> Straits?

Then maybe this topic was meant for you.

For those who have had release from the above musical misery and
deprivation, please use this topic to to help enlighten others.

I'll start the ball rolling, I hope it helps.....

Ignore the node name folks, I'm being educated.

Try some of these for size:-

Michael Doucet and Cajun Brew "Hot Cajun Rhythm and Blues" on Special
    Delivery (can't recall the number),

Clive Gregson and Christine Collister "Home and Away" (Cooking Vinyl)
    and "Mischief" (Special Delivery),

Brendan Croker and the Five O'clock Shadows "A Close Shave" (Unamerican
    Activities),

Le Rue "Le Rue" , same label as Croker,

Blues 'n' Trouble , any album; they've only made 3 to my knowledge,
I've got them all and none of them would I be without. Usual label
    is Ammunition.

Steve Philips "Best of....", same label as Croker,

Ted Hawkins "On The Boardwalk: The Venice Beach Tapes" and "Dock
of The Bay: Venice Beach Tapes Vol.2", both on American Activities.
The first is better than the second, but both are worth having.

The Prowlers "Livin' Outside The Law", UnAmerican Activities.

American Activities and UnAmerican Activities are labels put out
    by Hotshot Records of Leeds.

Alright then, you musical iconoclasts, let's have some more......

Anything by my current favourites, all reasonably well known but
not Casio top 40 stuff - Costello, Commotions, The Fall, Good old
Billy, the under-rated Christians, The Pogues, The Men they couldnt
Hang, REM, Martin Simpson, Bhundu Boys, Tom Waits...

Another vote for Ted Hawkins - that voice!

Going back a bit - John Cale, Captain Beefheart, Nick Drake, Roy
Harper, Hatfield and the North, King Crimson, rediscovering early
    Bowie, the Doors, Van Morrison

50's rhythm and blues, and straight blues

60's 'new wave' (ugh) jazz like Coltrane. Thelonius Monk, Mingus.

Just gotta cut through the garbage you hear *everywhere*, don't
be fooled by fashion and keep those ears open, there's loads of
good stuff if you can get to it...

Here's my all time favourites of the moment:

Getz/Gilberto by Stan Getz and Joo Gilberto. (Black cover with orange
pattern); NOT The Getz/Gilberto Collection which is a diabolical
recording. I suppose I'd describe their music as 'light jazz'. It is
fantastic. It's got 'The girl from Ipanema' on it. My favourite tracks
are 'Doralice' and 'So danco amor'. Enthuse enthuse.

Also Astrud Gilberto's greatest hits. This music is essentially the
same as the above, but all the tracks have Astrud singing and no
instrumental only tracks.

Other faves include: Tinita Tikaram's 'Ancient Heart' album, which is
fab. Suzanne Vega's 'Solitude Standing', Sting's 'The Dream of the Blue
Turtles', Latin Quarter's 'Modern Times' (a bit Casio-ish, that one)
and almost anything by Renaissance.

In fact, just thinking about this music makes my eyes water, I haven't
heard any decent music in two days :-( as I've had to dismantle my stereo
so I can decorate my lounge. (anyone know how to get emulsion paint
stains off: carpets, clothes, tables, chairs, windows, video, CD's,
cassettes, camera, glasses, hair, cat, books etc. etc.).

Steve.

First you have the ones with expensive CASIO's who know how to play
    and write :

The The - "Infected" & "Soul Mining"

Thomas Dolby - "Aliens ate my Buick!" & "The Flat Earth"

Talk Talk - "The Colour of Spring" etc.

Prefab Sprout - The brilliant "Steve McQueen" & "Swoon"

Then you get the back to basics stuff.

Michele Shocked - "Short Sharp Shocked"

Fairground Attraction - "First of a million kisses"

Clive Gregson & Christine Collister - "Mischief" & "Home and Away"

Finally you get the good time rock and roll.

Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band (Well I had to put that in even
though I'm not really that fond of it!)

Van Morrison - Poetic Champions Compose.

Try any of these, and you'll never want to listen to a CASIO again!!

    Mark.

Very bluesy, I've heard 'Ten Men Working' on the radio so
maybe it was a single, he has another 9 musicians playing
in the band, hence the title.

In the title track he slags off tour sponsorship by big business.

I think they'd be great live, anyone stateside seen them ??
