240.0. "Hoodoo Gurus" by DODGR::JMINVILLE (Dig It Up) Wed Oct 12 1988 22:39

I was surprised not to find a Hoodoo Gurus topic in this conference.
Maybe they're not as well known in The UK as they are here in The
US [which isn't that well known at all really]. I have their 2nd
album "Mars Needs Guitars" which is good, but not as good as their
1st album, IMO. I can't remember the title of the first album,
but it has "I Want You Back", "Like Wow, Wipeout", "Poison Pen",
and other great tunes. My band does a cover of "I Want You Back",
which is a really hot number. I saw them backup The Bangles a year
or so ago. They are excellent live! They have kind of a "garage
band" type feel to their music.

Any other Hoodoo fans out there?

    joe.

    Hi Joe,

I saw the hoodoo's a while ago, must admit, whilst they are good
to see live, I'm not sure that I would rush out and buy one of their
    records.

By the By, on your sighin note, you mad a reference to a band called
the English Beat. Is this a renamed version of "The Beat" as they
    were called in England ?

I think there were two bands floating around the UK at the same
time, one was "The Beat" and one was "The English Beat". The English
Beat did "Save It For Later", an absolutely wonderful song that
was later covered by Pete Townshend on the "Deep End Live" LP.
The Beat had at least one hit, but I can't remember what it was.

joe. (who thinks that The Hoodoo Gurus first album is a "must have").

I can't remember, maybe if you put down a few "lines" it might jog
    my memory.

I believe the first Hoodo's album is called, 'Stone Age Romeo'

    Great live act.

"Mirror in the Bathroom" and "Save it for later" were both
done by the same band, The English Beat. The English Beat
started out as The Beat but changed their name as not to be confused
with another band named The Beat who were at the time becoming
moderately popular in the United States. They soon disbanded
and The English Beat stuck with the new name. The eventually
mutated into General Public and then disbanded completely.

I can not recall any name change in th U.K, they were popular for
a couple of years and then faded away.

They also had a hit with 'Ca'nt get used to losing you' the old
    andy wiliiams *classic*. 8-)

In the middle of this hangover I seem to remember some connection
with Fine young cannibals & Three men and a trumpet, or summat like
    that

Thats the way I remember it. The Beat, stayed as The Beat in Britain,
but in the states they were called "The Enlish Beat"

Hoodoo Gurus - what a great band. I saw them in Milan with my brother
in July '87. It was so hot that we practically had to wring our
shirts out at the end! Needless to say, people don't exactly stand
still at Hoodoo Gurus gigs; my brother got an absolute shiner of
a black eye when someone inadvertently planted their head in his
face! It was a great gig anyway, they played "I Want You Back",
"What's My Scene", "Hell For Leather", "Out That Door", "Like Wow
Wipeout", etc. plus a great cover of a song by the Pretty Things.
    First class beat/garage sound!

    Regards,
    		Dom

The English Beat disbanded and two separate bands resulted

    General Public
    Fine Yound Cannibals

Then General Public broke up and now Ranking Roger has his own band.

I don't know what the story is with FYC. Has anyone heard anything?

Didn't they [FYC] do the soundtrack for "Suspect"?

I always liked, "Johnny, we're sorry".

The name of the Guru's first album is "Stonage Romeos", and what
a GREAT album it is. "I Want You Back" is on their first album,
but "Like Wow, Wipeout", and "Poison Pen" are on their 2nd album,
MNG's, which in my opinion is even better than their 1st.

If memory serves me well, they formed around 1983(ish) and are
    from Austrialia.

Does anyone know what the band is up to these days (upcoming album,
tour, etc.). I haven't heard much from them since "Blow Your Cool"
was released about a year and a 1/2 ago. One of the few bands I've
never seen live that I've really wanted to.

I don't know what they're up to now, but here's a bit of trivia:
they played in Toronto about a year ago. Don Adams, the guy who
played Maxwell Smart in "Get Smart", stars in films a TV series that's
filmed here (the series, incidentally, is absolutely brutal). It
turns out that the HG's are big "Get Smart" fans and wanted to meet
Don. One of the local papers ran a photo of the group with Don (and,
yes, they looked like happy campers as a result of the meeting).

    Great Live Act.

    A must!

I've seen them three times and would be first in line to see them
again (if they ever come out with a new album).

Try to catch them in a medium size club (no seats). If you're into
Slam dancing...you'll love 'em. I just like to stand back and watch.
The band gets upset sometimes because of all the violence...David
Faulkner (sp) even stopped in the middle of a song once to get everyone
to calm down. "Dig it up" and some of the material off of "Blow
    Your Cool" were the instigators.

High energy show...you can tell they like to perform. AND if they
play two nights in the same area, they don't play the same set.
I like that. I saw 'em two nites in a row (Boston and Providence).

They *are* due for a new album. Anyone hear anything?

Also, does anyone know which Guru member was involved with which
Bangle memeber? Is it still on?

    Susan
