Well,
i set the video (HiFi stereo and all that) and went away for the
w/e.
Arrived back Monday morning looking forward to hearing 'Monterey Pop'
in glorious wonderful stero (esp. the 'Dead bit) and what have I got ?
Seven bleeding hours of Radio 2 !!!!
When did Radio 1 change frequencies ? and (more to the point) why
didn't they send me a letter explaining Why and When ?
Did anyone else get the 'Dead bit ? Could I have a copy please ??

221.3 | Anyone record the middle 3 hours? | MALLET::BARKER | Pretty Damn Cosmic | Wed Oct 05 1988 19:46 | 32 |
| Hey now, well I managed to record 3 hours of it, the first hour & the
last 2.
Wunnerful Radio One is allegedly in stereo throughout the country it
has been put onto a separate frequency from Radio 2 now. I live 7 miles south
of Basingstoke and can pick it up from London (I think) on 104.5 Mhz although
it is a bit hissy. My brother live in Southampton and also attempted to record
the Monterey thing but couldn't find it anywhere on the dial (even after going
out & buying a stack of cassettes & a dipole aerial).
Just to whet your appetites from what I can recall of what I did manage
to tape. It was a documentary with lots of snippets of interesting people
relating what a gas it was at Monterey (John Philips, Chris Hillman, Bob Weir,
Lou Adler, Jackson Browne etc etc etc) then loads of terrific 1967 music
including full sets from Mamas & Papas (confirming my view from watching the
film of Monterey that they were'nt half so wimpy live as they were on record),
Simon & Garfunkel (OK if you like that sort of thing), Jimi Hendrix
(unbelievable when considered in the context of the time, very, very good).
There were also tracks from the Dead (about 30seconds of Cold Rain & Snow on my
tape, curses, & a long jam type thing the name of which escapes me), Jefferson
Airplane (Ballad of You Me & Pooneil) sounding very bluesy, Country Joe & Fish
(Feel like I'm Fixing To Die Rag) sounding pretty wrecked and Buffalo
Springfield (Rock & Roll Woman + Bluebird) sounding rather ragged & untogether.
Not to mention Janis, Electric Flag, Otis, the Butter band etc etc.
Well as I said I only managed to tape 3 hours so that there is another
3 hours that I am desparate to get hold of. If the other old hippies in this
file would care to contact me by Mail I will arrange to make copies of my
tapes. If anyone can help re the missing middle section of this superb
programme then don't be shy in coming forward.

221.7 | Who's on first? | PIWACT::JMINVILLE | Dig It Up | Thu Oct 13 1988 14:58 | 13 |
| An interesting bit of trivia related to The Monterey Pop Festival
is that The Who refused to have Jimi Hendrix go on before them.
Apparently, Hendrix had opened for The Who on numerous occasions
in the UK when Jimi was still a relatively obscure artist. At
Monterey, Townshend and Hendrix were talking backstage [Hendrix
was supposed to go on first] and Townshend said that The Who would
not let The Experience be the opening act, but that they would open
for Hendrix [quite an honor coming from ol' Pete]. Jimi was so
flattered by this that he said, "OK, then I'm gonna pull out all
the stops", and he proceeded to do his [probably] best known per-
formance -- complete with burning his guitar, etc.

221.8 | The way I heard it ... | PUGH::JANE | I can't think of a good one | Thu Oct 13 1988 15:27 | 13 |

This was said in an interview with Townsend during a Hendrix
story type film/video - I've got the thing on video at home
- but it's beta format and I've only got VHS now :-(. It was
about the first TV prog I videoed - great Hendrix stuff ...
Anyway .. from what I remember of the interview it was
Pete and Jimi arguing about who would go on first as neither
act wanted to follow the other - when Hendrix agreed to go
second he said "In that case I'm gonna pull *all* the stops"
... and he did.

| .8 Pete and Jimi arguing about who would go on first as neither
.8 act wanted to follow the other....
Probably because each knew that there might be no stage left after
the first act regardless of which went first...what with Jimmy setting
things on fire and the Who's reputation for breaking up the stage/PA
systems...

Yes - some great concert footage ..... really excellent, especially
from the German gigs.
They didn't show the other side of her - the film content was
controlled to a large extent by the Joplin estate.
It was great to see someone who hasn't been featured that much in
the media over the years.

Which other side of her do you mean, David? I know, for instance,
that no mention was made in the film of her drug abuse or the
circumstances of her death (in fact, if you didn't know she *was*
dead, the film didn't tell you......did it?)
Anyway, she came across, to me, as someone who was a bit sad and
vulnerable, who was only really happy out there in front of the
band.......

Yeh, *that* other side!
I agree with the sentiments in your last paragraph - I guess that
was the real Janis.
