    Where did you hear this.

OK, I'll try and keep this brief, but ....

I didn't even bother to watch Starship at Reading, even though they
still play a few of the oldies. Saw them at Knebworth supporting
Genesis (first ever gig without Grace). They were throwing all sorts
of stuff into the audience. Quite a good gig, although the sound
    wasn't brilliant.

Guess "Crown Of Creation" is best J.A. although "Worst Of" is a very
good collection of their best years. "Flight Log" is nice packaging,
and includes lots of the spin off projects. "Fulton Street", released
this year is a double anthology. Best for me are "Wooden Ships",
"China", "It's No Secret" and the haunting "Latha". Actually, "Thirty
Seconds Over Winterland" is not that bad considering it was close
to them pushing the self-destruct button.

The Slick/Kantner solo is also good - I think it's called "China"

J.S. made some good stuff but, by the time "Earth" came along (perhaps
Dearth would be a better name), Kantner was down to 1 shared composer
    credit.

"St. Charles" from their third (can't recall title) is one of my
    faves.

Also have Hot Tuna's "Double Dose", with a superb rendition (electric)
    of "Genesis".

Ahhhhh, the Airplane ..... now there was a band ........

I have a Slick/Kantner solo (with a few other peeps), called (wait
for it) 'Baron Von Tollbooth and The Chrome Nun', ever heard of
    that?

    RE: .2

"Baron Von Tollbooth" was a later album, and it might have been
credited to either one (Slick I think) or t'other. The one I'm
thinking off ahs the baby on the cover, being held out of the ocean
    - Slick's daughter! They kept some of their best songs for that
album, instead of letting the band use them on "Bark".

Slick also did a movie soundtrack "Manhole"!!!!

Any other J.A. heads out there?

    David.

Yes, they are getting back together to record some stuff....

But they said not to expect it to sound just like old airplane stuff,
and it certainly won't sound like starship.

    	Ya,

And I also have 2 Gracie solo albums, the earlier is
I think called 'DREAMS' which is brill, and also
'Welcome to the Wrecking Ball' or summat which is not
so hot (pretty duff if the truth be told).

I *hope* it won't sound like Starship - the only album by a grup
of that name I liked was "Blows against the Empire" - which was
    a JA album anyhow.

Going to hit the SUrrealistic Pillow this evening...

Sounds good, and I hope it works. These sort of reunions don't
always work on record, but we'll see .... hope they tour the UK.

The Slick/Kantner album I mentioned a few replies back is actually
called "Sunfighter". Also, David Frieberg is co-credited on "Baron
Von Tollbooth ..." along with Grace and Paul.

I'd agree that "Dreams" is good - I haven't heard any of the others
    though.

I was always particularly fond of the Volunteers lp....
Cant say I've heard about this reunion, does anyone know *which*
original line up it's going to be?
After hearing some of the later Starship stuff, it makes lyrics
like " in nineteen hundred and seventy five
all my people rose up from the countryside
to move against you government man
           do you understand"
ring a bit hollow - still, I suppose their revolutionary stance
was partly a reflection of the times. (Good lp, Bark)

Grace Slicks piano playing never got the credit it deserved, I really
    like it.....

215.9It's no secret ....KERNEL::COHENKeep Music LiveFri Sep 30 1988 18:0021

Wow ... this one hasn't lasted very long!!! And for such a great
    band too.

J.A. were a band that I listened to a hell of a lot around 74/75/76
(I had a bit of catching up to do).

To me, their main attributes were the great harmony vocals that Slick,
Kantner and Balin put out. A good/best example is 'Wooden Ships' which
I rate a lot higher that the CSN+Y version. And, of course, they
had a rather unique rythmn section too - Dryden and Cassidy.
    Kaukonen's haunting guitar breaks.

    They had their time - Haight/Ashbury and '67/'68 - I'm not sure
why they are gonna get back (if this is true), but we'll just have
    to wait and see.

"Blows Against The Empire" was/is a fantastic album. I mean everybody
who was anybody was on that one from CSN&Y to most of the Dead.

I read in Rolling Stone recently [i.e. past issue or so] that Kantner,
Slick, Cassady, and Kaukonen are talking about doing a new JA album.
Don't know who will play drums.

    joe.

Looks like they may tour with the new album too. What about Balin,
Frieberg etc. - will they be involved?

It's about time that we got some firm news on all this - not seen
    much in the UK press.

    David.

Frieberg was an early Starship member, don't think he was an Airplane
    dude though;

Balin, there was no mention of him in the RS article. Didn't he
    always have "ego" problems?

    joe.

    RE: .13

Frieberg *was* actually an Airplane guy - he played on "Thirty Seconds
Over Winterland", but I'm not sure if he played on "Long John Silver"
and "Bark". He joined at about the same time as Papa John Creach
    - just before the Airplane pressed the self destruct button.

As for Balin, well, "Earth" was practically his album (with co-writer
Jessie Barish). Kantner was down to one shared credit here.

"Sing a song for Diana ......."

    David.

He sure was good - some great playin' on "Dragonfly" and "Red Octopus"
    - he wasn't exactly a youngster either; I think he was late 50's, maybe
    even 60!!!!

"Wooden Ships on the water ...."
