| Well, if theyre anything like they were when I saw them 4/5 years
ago, theyll be great - slightly odd maybe, using strange percussion
instruments and hypnotic rhythms, as well as non-standard arranging
and singing. They reminded me of very early Thompson Twins i.e.
they play well together as a unit, and they play *to* the audience
rather than over their heads - no herorocker posing etc
I think I may have just talked myself into going!
Any info on availability of H&C lp's?

thanks for the Reply Bob,
If you are going perhaps we could meet up at the gig ? (or the pub just
down from the Town & Country Club).
As far as albums are concerned theres one due next week but I can't
remember the title, there's also been at least one other which none of
the local record shops seem to have either.
I'm sure someone out there will correct me on that though and tell me
exactly how many albums they have done and there names.
Anyway must go now,

I saw H&C live last year in Sydney and they were excellent..
I brought 1 CD of them back from Australia and have had great trouble
getting hold of stuff over here. The CD I brought back, "Ghost Nation",
is without a doubt one of the best in my collection.
If anybody is still alive and reading this please reply so I can
write more about the best band to come out of Oz.

So, come on Rob, enlighten me.
I've never heard of the band but in this techno wasteland, it's hardly
surprising. For another clue where 'this' is, Nina Hagen is still big
over here (and believe me, she is now big, fat, buxom and crap.)
Cheers,
Mark.

My God, Life !!
It doesn't surprise me too much that you've not heard
of them as I hadn't until I went to Australia on vacation, but over
there they're as big as Nina Hagen's left breast !!!!!
They hail from Melbourne and have had some success in the late
'80s in Europe but from hearing interviews with the band had a bad
experience in England tour wise which I think ended any hope off "making
it big".
I believe that recently they have had some success in the states
although to what degree I don't know.
They have what I believe to be an original sound of Rock riffs with
2 trumpets and a trumbone to add good harmoney and a polished edge.
From what I've heard of their ealier stuff it's a little weird to
say the least but their later material sounds very clean and well
produced and with female backing vocals on a few tracks gives an all
round great sound...
There is a new album out I believe (well when I saw them in '91
they played a couple of tracks that they said were from an album to be
out soon and a single "Where do you go", did indeed follow), although
as yet I've had no joy in finding it.
Maybe it's available in Frankfurt ??????
Later Mark,
Rob..

Hmmm,
OK Rob,
When I next venture into that sprawling metropolis, I'll see if I can
find anything.
If I do, I'll put some stuff in here.

Mark,
The 'life' comment was only said because I didn't expect anyone to
notice a reply to a topic that hadn't been replied to in over 2
years...
I hope you didn't take offense as that was the last thing meant by
it..

| Can't say I ever enjoyed this band much - muddy brass section
and a hint of stadium machismo that belied their SPK-isms.
Some catchy tunes though.

197.11 | Early stuff the best | LARVAE::DRSD20::BEGLEY | | Mon Mar 08 1993 15:34 | 7 |
| My favourite H&C tunes were the early ones circa "Talking to a
Stranger" and the Yellow Tow-Truck EP. Later stuff I didn't like as
much.
In a totally pointless rat-holing aside there is a chain of 2nd hand
leather gear stores in NZ called Hunters & Collectors.

| Love 'em. I was also at the T&C last year, I thought the atmosphere
was wonderful - despite being the token non-aussie in the crowd.
Definitely a band to see live.

Debs,
I totally agree that they are, as the old cliche goes, "a
band to see live".
I'll never forget the atmosphere at the gig and the fact that
it was so crowded that you couldn't put your hands together!! I think
I lost half a stone that night!!!!!!!
I didn't realise they played in London a recently as '92.
Anybody know of any plans to tour in '93 ???

ex-pats as I do, no doubt I shall find out pretty soon!
I'll keep this notes conf. posted when I hear.

| Trivia: The lead singer's (songwriter, guitar player too) brother is
in Crowded House. I've blank on both their names.
H&C are definitely a band to see live: extremely powerful. (I met them
when I was interning at IRS, and was very surprised how short the lead
singer was; he seemed much larger on stage.)
Last I heard of H&C is that they moved from IRS Records to Atlantic,
released Ghost Nation with absolutely no publicity (because Atlantic
stinks when it comes to helping their smaller bands), and haven't been
heard of since. Any news of new lps or tours would be much
appreciated.

You can always rely on me for useless information.

| I'm afraid I don't know their tour dates - maybe it was just London,
given the largely Australian audience... (about 99.9% I reckon!) but it
was a great night. They played a lot of crowd-pleasing oldies, and a
few tracks from the new CD.
