    They'll probably make it pretty big.  Enjoyed them at Reading, but
    there's the pretentious folky roots still lying about in there,
    which I don't think suites them.  Now Horslips, there's an Irish
    band .... (or was I should say!).
    
    I think they'll last a fair time, although there's still the U2
    comparisons they have to get over ... pretty soon I expect.

    I think it's a bit unfair to call the folky bit pretentious. After
    all at least two of the band grew up entering in these song
    competitions and things, the singer was actually the national champion
    at playing 'that drum thingy' that Dave so cleverly knows the name
    of, most of them are fluent speakers of the Irish tongue, and just
    check out their names.....not exactly 'here's a good gimmick let's
    go for it' it all seems very natural to me.
    
    Anyway, I love 'em. As one music paper said, listening to their
    album 'People' you 'hear' all sorts of greats from the past in the
    music.....but it feels natural...not copied.

    a great band, second to U2 in Ireland at the moment, and probably
    will be for some time to come (unless Aslan can do something about
    it!)....the album 'People' is excellent.....the lead singer Liam (I
    think) was the National Boron champion, as was said earlier they're 
    all pretty fluent in the Irish language.......and pretentious? what?
    wise up.....I think they're pretty sound.......and the Horslips!

I was back in Ireland a few weeks ago and I felt that the tide may be 
going against them. Another case of blinded-by-the-hype ??

Mr O Maolin was seen as being VERY pretentious, mumbling on about his
gypsy-eatin-berries-from-the-tree dreams. The lad likes to think it's
his lifestyle!! I s'pose ye can all blame Dave Fanning for setting them
up!!

As for that NME article...those people will run out of WORDS soon!!

    When I first heard the band I thought 'not bad', but like
    so many *up and coming* Irish acts have they the stamina
    etc to keep at it?. Then I bought their 'people' album and
    I was very impressed. It's good not great, shall we say solid.
    It indicated they were on the right track and displayed a lot
    of promise.
    
    However then the *HYPE* started to flow. Espiecally from Radio 2
    (national station),they way they went on-and-on about HHF you'd
    suspect they all had shares in the band.They gave the album and
    single 'don't go' rave reviews and *lots* of air play. Then they
    were given the Eurovision stint and lots of TV slots!!! 
    
    The band play a live concert in the RDS Dublin early sept before
    an expected audience of 30,000+. This will be their real test.
    Hopefully they won't fall-flat-on-their-face, but the MEDIA have
    a happy-knack of knack of *slating* groups that they previously
    built-up.
    
    Their is nothing *distinctive* in their sound as of yet. They
    show shades of U2,The Waterboys and Cactus World News. However
    the latter two bands got stuck in neutral also after a very
    promising start. They are shortly to tour the US and if that goes
    well then they have it made...
    
    Hoping all goes well for them and waiting with excitment for album
    no. 2.

    Couldn't agree more - it was laughable the way she was telling us
    this was the ultimate liove experience of 1988.
    
    RE: previous replies .... I'm not doubting their history etc. or
    their roots, it's just that the part of the set I was describing
    didn't seem to add anything at all to the set .... a bit token.
    
    This is actually a pretty decent topic - the rest of this conference
    seems to be turning into either 1 liners or who/what do you hate the
    most a la *some* topics in DREGS::MUSIC.
    
    Back to the Hotties - their second album will be telling point.

    As with everything else, after the hype has died down, the pretentions
    or otherwise are forgotten, etc., the music will stand or fall on
    its own, and I think the 'Hotties' (nice one) will survive.(with
    this in mind you can see why Sick Sick Sputnik are long forgotten!)
    Theres nothing wrong with displaying your roots/influences , in
    my opinion - heck, I like Van Morrison too!                        
    Anyway, good luck to them - they seem to be one band who play
    *together* and get off on it, rather than yet another bunch of
     "how can we con vast sums of money out of the kids and retire in 6
      months" merchants

    9/30.  If any of you Boston area readers want to relieve me of
    these two tickets, you can have 'em for what I paid.

    Dave K (who's met 6' 2" Liam O'Maonlai!) told me at Xmas that it's
    completed and that the bunch of gypsy-rakes tried out the songs in The
    Gaeltacht (of all places!)
