178.0. "Comus - First Utterance" by WELMTS::GREENB (then I was nutted by reality) Wed Aug 24 1988 17:19

    Attention all you old hippies!!
Does anyone out there remember a group called Comus?
They were a six piece comprised of 2 guitars violin flute percussion
(all acoustic) and electric bass. For an acoustic group they sure
could make a racket - their singer sounded like Roger Chapman in
    a higher register.
Anyway, the point of this note is that I have been trying for ages
to get hold of the only lp they recorded with this line up - its
called First Utterance, and came out about 1971. Its been deleted
    for years.
Thanks in advance for any help

    Bob

    Comus... A very good band!!
I picked up an LP of theirs on the Virgin label entitled "To Keep
From Crying". Its the only thing of theirs I've heard, but I was
very impressed with it. I don't recall a "Roger Chapman" type vocal,
but that may be because the prevailing mood of the LP is "ethereal".

Do you know which of the 2 lps came first? I have never come across
    "First Utterance".

178.2Children of the universeWELMTS::GREENBThree in a row, she's got to goMon Oct 17 1988 17:2710
To Keep From Crying came about 4 years after First Utterance....
The line up was very different, I think only the singer and bass
player survived the first lp! TKFC has a much 'straighter' sound
than FU, with drums, keyboards and nice vocals much in evidence.
Like Tennents, its good, but not *that* good....
But that first one has some very manic parts on it....

    Still hoping to find it

It must have been a *bl**dy* small ad, Alex.

Are you just relaying the info, or have you heard the lp/been looking
    for it too?

    Thanks a lot anyway

178.5Comus: Re-discovered in Scotland45417::CAMPBELLMon Nov 21 1988 10:0012
    Hello Bob,

Yes, it was a small ad, and on the basis of your description, I
think I'll probably go for First Utterance. As you may have gathered,
I've already got "To Keep From Crying". Your comments comparing
the two reminded me of Caravan and the much more exciting/wilder/acid
content of their very first (and rare) LP simply entitled "Caravan".

Did you get through to that number and get the LP OK? Because if
you did, then I'll go for it too!

    	Alex.
178.6Found it and lost it again....WELMTS::GREENBDon't give me facts, give me ideas!Fri Dec 02 1988 11:2819
    Hi Alex,

Well, I finally got round to phoning the shop and enquiring about
the lp. I asked him what label it was on, how much it cost, and
whether it was available anywhere else. He said hadn't i seen the
ad, and i said no, someone had told me their number. He then started
ranting about oh no not another one on the bloody grapevine, never
mind youll probably get it for five pounds more in London if you
want to save the cost of a stamp etc. etc.

He was bloody rude, and I thought screw you matey, I don't need
this, I'd rather not have the record at all than put money in your
    pocket.

So I'm still looking, sort of......

Perhaps he just didnt like my London accent 8^)

Hmm, sorry to hear that you were so badly treated by the guy at
Hot Wacks in Edinburgh. I've had similarly unhelpful/downright
cheeky assistance from this shop too, and whilst, like you, it kinda
puts you off buying from there, it has to be said that this shop
is one of the best I know...in Scotland!!! I've visited it a few
times in the last few years, and it has an amazing selection of
imports, re-releases, limited editions, rarities, second-hand etc.

Maybe the fact that they sound so *unhelpful* they have such a big
    collection/selection!!!

Does anyone know of any similar shops in the London area??
Otherwise my only alternatives are to buy from HW or scour Camden
    Lock markets....

178.10Hope you get it from somewhere...eventually!AYOV28::DROBBI'm just another Western guy.....Mon Dec 05 1988 13:1515
You could try the following, all specialists in 60's/70's
    progressive/folk rock amongst others :-

Vinyl Solution, 39 Hereford Road, London W2 (01-229-8010)

Vinyl Experience, 20 Hanway Street, London W1 (01-637-1771)

OFF Records, 58 Battersea Rise, London SW11 (01-223-4990)

Failing either of these, I think you could give Hot Wacks a chance
to redeem themselves - their mail-order service is speedy, and the
records are always well-packed. Be sure to ask for a copy of their
latest lists too - some of their sale offers are amazing, with many
a bargain to be picked up (e.g. a copy of the Velvets first U.K.
album in *excellent* condition for 99p).

I'm telling ya, ol' VINYL SOLUTION are hard to beat when it comes
to the recent craze for re-issues of old 60's/70's albums. They
advertise monthly in RECORD COLLECTOR, and have always been helpful
anytime I've phoned 'em for info.

That aside, glad to hear that you got your album.
