Mark,
the latest info I've got is that they will shortly be releasing
a SIXTY track Boxed set !!, containing some new stuff, some previously
unreleased old stuff and the best of the rest.
As soon as I know some more I'll add it to this note...

172.3 | a little info | HAZEL::STARR | You ain't nothin' but fine, fine, fine! | Mon Aug 22 1988 21:47 | 14 |
| Well, over here in the States the Tull box set has already been released.
I am not a big Jethro Tull fan, so I didn't pay too much attention, but
I think these details are correct.
It is a 6-LP or 4-CD set (same as Clapton). Unlike Clapton's set, which
had a lot of greatest hits on it, the Tull set focused more on
unreleased tracks, live cuts, and alternate takes. I believe I heard
that it is longer than the EC set, with more songs also. I also believe
it was priced similiar to the EC set.
I don;t know the release date for your side of the pond (maybe its already
out?). Also, amybe a real Tull fan can give you more insight.

| The _Twenty Years Of Jethro Tull_ boxed LP *is* out in the UK -
not sure of the price, but I have seen it in Our Price.
I've seen em a few times (74-78) and they are always good live. Heard
varying reports of their 20th anniversary Wembley Arena gig. Their
last album "Creat Of A Knave" is very Dire Straits-ish indeed -
I think it's mainly Anderson with other guys.
I only have one of theior albums, _Passion Play_ - made number 1
in the US lists, but it received a complete thumbs down from the
press - caused them to retire, but in the end turned out to be a
rather hasty decision.

I'll put a vote up for 'thick as a brick' sleeve great.
The pictures in the Living in the past are good too.

172.7 | excellent, excellent, excellent etc. etc. | KERNEL::COHEN | Keep Music Live | Tue Aug 23 1988 17:53 | 13 |

The drummer on "Thick As a Brick" (and for the best period) was
Clive Bunker ...... you can catch him on the London circuit with
Poormouth, a very good rock band with Irish overtones.
The current "Living In The Past" sleeve is not a patch on the original,
which was excellent an excellent gatefold job. Best compilation
by far - the M.U. stuff is not too hot.

| The drummer on Thick as a Brick is Barriemore Barlow. Clive Bunker's
last album was Aqualung to bad I really liked him. 20 Years of Jethro
Tull is 5 albums 3 disc's it's like Living in the Past great stuff
it has a booklet with pictures and a written history of Tull. I have
the albums I give the sound and performance an A+. Highly Recommended
for people who like the old Tull.

Which version of the Fairports did Martin Allcock spring from?
Versions/lineup changes of the Fairports should really be the subject
of a new note, but there probably isnt a disk big enough to hold
all that info

| There is a Fairport note in COOKIE::FOLK_MUSIC.
Martin Allcock is in the most recent lineup (number 16!!) and was
on the last two albums. He plays bass, guitar, bouzouki, keyboards,
all sorts of things!!
Great member of a great band...

I finally bought the boxed set at the w/e, 3 CD's 75+ mins each for
24 quid !! Grate value, and just about completes my Tull collection,
lots of b-sides, radio out takes etc.

| I just happen to have a copy of the aforementioned JT boxed set.
(CD version of course), Its fab, lots of live stuff, unreleased
stuff and plenty of info in the little booklet you get with it.
The Family Tree of all the Jethro Tull incarnations is very
interesting. There seems to be a hell of a lot of nepatism (sp?)
between JT and fairport convention, pity I dont like them (after
seeing them support JT at the 20th birthday concert at Wempley).
Anyway rush out and get it, tis fab.

172.21 | A defence of Fairport Convention | MALLET::BARKER | Pretty Damn Cosmic | Thu Sep 15 1988 18:17 | 21 |
| re .last couple
I am sorry but I toadally disagree with your low opinion of the current Fairport
Convention.
Personally I think that they are the best lineup that Fairport have *ever* had
although it would be nice at times to have a female vocalist. I have seen
them with both June (Silly Sisters) Tabor & Cathy (Albion Band) Lesurf & they
were pretty tremendous.
They have certainly got less folky & more electric over the years but that is
more to my taste anyway. They are now using synths etc and producing music for
the eighties. Check out the album 'Gladys Leap' for such new Fairport classics
as 'Honour & Praise' also Simon Nicol's solo album 'Before Your Time'.
Checkout topic 341 in COOKIE::FOLK_MUSIC (KP7 to select) unless there is enough
interest to start a topic here.
BTW I think that Jethro Tull are pretty tremendous too.

172.22 | Fairport Convention - Revisited. | JANUS::BHARRISON | and her legs went on forever... | Fri Sep 16 1988 10:05 | 11 |
| Hi guys,
I didnt mean to put Fairport Convention down, from what I heard
they are very accomplished musicians, but unfortunately not to my
taste.
I admit that this summary is just seeing them at the JT concert,
and not from any vinyl works they have done. I just have never got
into them, I suppose Id beter sit down and listen to some and form
a more coherent opinion.

solo album.
It'll be interesting to see who replaces him in Tull (who incidentally
have a new album out).

It sounds like he's still got quite a lot in his plate ! I watched the
IOW festival film at the w/e, the Tull bit was nice to see. Also lots
of bands, and in particular Tiny Tim refusing to go on 'or even tune up'
until he was paid in cash...
