| Someone told me last night that a number of the bands due to play
Reading this weekend had pulled out due to the deaths at Donnington
last weekend.
Anybody know if there's any truth in this rumour ?

READING ROCK '88
----------------
Friday
Most of the bands wern't up to much in my opinion, although some people
were raving about Wonderstuff and Fields Of The Nephilim. They may
have put out some decent vinyl, but live, they just didn't cut it
- their material is just not strong enough. I enjoyed Ghost Dance
of all the bands. The Ramones were pretty predictable and played
a number of oldies - "Roackaway Beach", "Beat On The Brat", "Gabba
Gabba Hey Hey" and "Neddles and Pins" - not a bad set, although
a little repetetive, eh hmmm.
Iggy Pop - I could hear every word he said - tight band, sounding
good - he looked like he was having a good time! Quite a few cuts
from "Instinct" plus "Real Wild Child", "Winners and Loosers", "1969",
"Search and Destroy", "Raw Power" and ... "The Passenger". Plus,
somthing from "New Values" I think. A really good set from the
old' zomboid himself!!
Saturday
Rest!
Sunday
Roachford (a soul rock outfit) were excellent. Broken English started
well but tailled of towards the end. I did enjoy some of John Hiatt's
stuff ... espacially his "Is this a rock show or a juggler's convetion"
comment. Hothouse Flowers started off very slow and tedious for,
but they finished a lot stronger. They have a long way to go before
their knockin' at U2's door!! Also, the bhodran playing by the
lead singer was complete fill - they should drop it.
Squeeze - this was worth waiting for. A great bouncy set from a
tight band, whose last album ("Baylon And On") was a brilliant return
to form. All the hits were played - loads of 'em. Jools did his
intro bit and we had a good laugh. I could listen have listened
to Glenn Tilbrook's voice alll night!!!! A really great set.
Apart from the music, the flapjack stall was just excellent - loved
it. More variety of food this year, and some very interesting stalls
too.
Good humoured crowd, who were misjudged at times by the DJ's - they
were really naff and didn't inject *any* life into the proceedings.
Perhaps a visible compare/DJ is needed next time round. Less turned
out (weather fears, Donnigton aftermath), but it was great fun.
See ya next year ....
David.

Re.4
Who was that female DJ doing the Sunday afternoon spot ? I thought
I was having flashbacks to 'me old school days'!
Quote: "If you don't stop throwing those bottles then we'll turn
off the music and there won't be anymore bands"
5 mins later......
"right, thats it, no more music."
10 mins later......
"alright, you seem to have calmed down so we'll turn it back on
but if you start again....well....."
WOT DO YOU BLOODY EXPECT !!!!!
(Me...I just sucked my thumb, threatened to hold my breath 'till
they turned the music back on and sulked for half an hour)
Jez
PS: The Hot House Flowers and John Hiate (sp?) were great, shame
about Decon Blue.

Don't know, they only played the first song from their set then
downed instruments and walked off stage. Five minutes later the
lead singer walked back on stage and started lecturing the crowd
on bottle throwing, seems the female front singer got hit on the
finger by a bottle. That was the last we saw of them.

I only made Sunday (MJ asked me to go and visit at Wembley Friday!!).
I thought the day was crap until John Hiatt came on, then things
livened up. really enjoyed his set. Hothouse Flowers did start off
slow but I thought the set as a whole was brill., and as for Squeeze.
I'm not really a Squeeze fan and wasn't really bothered about staying
but was made to...and boy was I glad. They were great. They were
so tight. great stuff.
on a slightly different note, I did feel there were a lot of people
there who didn't really care for the musical content...more the
achoholic content.
Tommy.

Yep,
basically the Scoprions 10 years on, same old sound, same old
cliche'd style.
Runrig were grate though ! one of my faves from my days in Aberdeen.
Also the 'Perry'(Sp?) from the Cider stall, well worth the 'trip' each
year whether the bands are any good or not !
