170.0. "Religious Band names" by CHEFS::LAWSONM (Finite cann't comprehend Infinite) Fri Aug 19 1988 18:44

    A thought; I am a born-again Christian and it interests me why a
    fair number of groups are calling themselves "Religious" names.

    The Christians, Jesus and the mary chain, The Church ?

    any Ideas  ?

170.1Dear God, hope you got the letter..MPGS::TURNERThe Bear that Beers the Kirin's NameFri Aug 19 1988 18:5916
    I hate to disappoint, but...

    > The Christians
    It's their last name.  Honest.

    As for the other two:

    > Jesus and the mary chain, The Church
    Correction: it's "The Jesus and Mary Chain".

    I think it's a very simple reason: religious terms and names are
    extremely loaded with meaning. Which has more impact, a band called
    "Chicago" or a band called "The Lords of the New Church"? or "The
    Bible"?

    Can you expand on the "loaded with meaning" bit

170.4How about "The Saints"MED::ARTHURWalk away...in silenceTue Aug 23 1988 21:435
	I believe he means more controversial...

	You should see what is happening over here with the
	opening of the movie "The Last Temptation of Christ".
170.5or even "Genesis"GUMDRP::TURNERThe Bear that Beers the Kirin's NameWed Aug 24 1988 16:3615
	I believe he means more controversial...

	No, I meant pre-loaded with societally contextual imagery.
	(Ack.   That's English?)

	That is to say: band names such as "The Saints" or "The Lords of
	the New Church" conjure up conscious and unconscious images and
	relationships that a name like "The Crickets" or "The Rolling Stones"
	don't. When you hear "The Lords of the New Church", or at least when
	I do, my brain makes associations with power, life and death, dominion
	over people, breakdown and reconstruction on a major level. When I
	hear "The Rolling Stones", I think of a Muddy Waters tune and/or a
	boulder tumbling down a hill.

    Oh Yeah !!! Well when I hear of the 'Saints' I think of the football
    team.

    When I hear of the Saints I think of a bunch of scruffy Aussies
    who recorded one of the great early punk 45's i.e. (I'm) Stranded

        Another religion derived band is Jesus Chrysler, religion and
    buisness, is there any more perfect combination? ;-)

        I think that some of the religously oriented group names are
    a jab at the religion they are derived from. Others are just a
    play on words, or as someone previously mentioned, an attention
    grabber.

170.9Blasphemous NamesCHEFS::SKINNERJIe Jesu Domine, dona eis RequiemWed Feb 15 1989 08:3510
    Re. Previous notes

    There are also those bands that use the Christian name for blasphemous
    impact - "Christian Death" is an example, their last tour was even
    under the title of "The Scriptures".

    Just because the name's a little extreme don't write them off entirely,
    their music is interesting.

    That's because they are short of things to call themselves so they
    can only use religious names
