'When I was a kid, all I wanted was to play a red and white

'I think Hank's rendition of Going Home is the best I've heard'.
I also saw Dire Straits on TV recently where Mark bought Hank Marvin
on for the finale which was Going Home. Unfortunately they still
stuck to the lead sax arrangement with Hank playing rythm. However,
enough evidence here to show Mark Knopfler wouldn't disagree strongly
with my view.

Certainly Elvis had a monster hit with 'In the Ghetto' back in 69/70
ish. However....
I have an old LP by Family Dogg who had a one off hit with 'Its
a Way of Life'. On the LP is 'In the Ghetto'. I've never figured
out who released it first because the only date on the LP is the
same year as Elvis' realease. I suspect Elvis was the original but
it could just be his was a cover.
Above LP also had Led Zeppelin (well John Bonham, Jimmy Page and
another member whose name escapes me) as session musicians. Actually
this must mean the LP pre-dates Led Zeppelin as a group which may
provide a clue.

| well here's some more
In my collection of odd records is one called Reggaebility by the
Cimarons. As you might guess, it's reggae-style. But the tracks on it
are *all* covers, of things like Love Me Do, C'Moon, Mull of Kintyre,
That'll be the Day, Big Girls Don't Cry. Etc. Some of them work, most
of them don't. But it was an interesting idea.
Another LP with loadsacovers is Faithful by Todd Rundgren. One side of
this LP is note-for-note perfect covers of Todd's faves of the sixties
- such tracks as Good Vibrations, Rain, Strawberry Fields, If Six was
Nine, etc. This is a mid-seventies LP, before the days of sampling,
Fairlights, etc, so he must have gone to a lot of trouble to get them
sounding as close as he did. Why? Your guess is as good as mine.
now to *serious* cover versions
Otway and Barrett did a truly marvellous version of "Ghost Riders
in the Sky"/"Running from the Law" on their "Deep and Meaningless"
LP. Come back Otway and Barrett, the world needs you.
Robert Palmer had a minor hit with a tune called "(You are in my)
System", which was a very close cover of an original by a U.S. band
called The System. Robert also had a turntable hit with a Todd Rundgren
tune called Can we Still be Friends.
And finally, one gets my nomination for worst cover in a long time: the
Goth version of "Like A Hurricane" which is around at the moment. I've
nothing against Gothdom in general, but *this* is just not nice.
yours

Geez I think that was better than the original!!! Just goes to show
ya Steve how subjective 'musical tastes' really are.
Anybody know what ever happened to the Flying Pickets? One of the
last things I heard about the group was when they were *busted*
by the D.S. while travelling to(or from) a gig somewhere!!!

The lead singer (?) the guy with the sideburns used to be in a group
called 'Mutiny' who played in a small pub in SE London. Another

I agree, they were the first band I ever saw live, and definately
one of the best. What about Jailbreak and Johny the Fox?
What about Cliff Richards cover version of his own song

help, but it was better than the original, oder...

I heard another version of 'All along The Watchtower' last night
on the radio...it was called the Special 'kick-ass' Remix by a
heavy metal outfit called T.S.O.L.. It wasn't a bad version...as
to be expected a bit loud...sorta cross between The Doors and U2.

T'Pau have also covered this, its on the "B" side to a 12" single
(can't remember which). Its got Ron Rogers on vocals rather than
Carol Decker - A very good cover.

positive Iggy wrote that song.
