| Yes, she is still making albums. She lives in the heart of Kent,
and has a converted cottage just down the road, which is her studio.
The last album she released - "The hounds of love" - took her two
years to write and record. Since then, the only "new" material she
has released was a re-recording of her first British hit, "Wuthering
Heights". Other albums of hers you may wish to look for, or, better
still, listen to, are:
"The Kick Inside" - her first album, good early KB stuff
"Lionheart" - second album, not quite so good to my mind, but
OK.
"Never for Ever" - excellent stuff!
I can give you (a lot) more details if you want.

re.1 Keith,
I'd appreciate any (lots of) details about Kate Bush.
I bought 'The Kick Inside' shortly after seeing Kate on TV, and I enjoyed the
album.
About two months ago I found her 'Hounds of Love' album in the discount
bin and bought it. That album blew me away. I can see why it took her two
years to write it. Every time I listen to it I find something new to like.
I bought 'Lionheart' a couple of weeks ago. I didn't like it very much at
first, but after listening a few more times I'm enjoying it almost as much
as 'Hounds of Love'. Anyway, I've ordered 'The Dreaming', and I'll have to
look for 'Never for Ever'. I've also seen 'The Whole Story' which appears
to be a Kate Bush greatest hits sort of thing with a new vocal of 'Wuthering
Heights'. On the album jacket it says 'available in video', but I haven't
seen the video sold here. There's also a video release of a live performance.
I know that Kate Bush is a very talented singer, songwriter, record producer,
pianist, choreographer, mime (anything else?), and she's influenced by the
likes of David Gilmour, and that she's a beautiful woman, as well. (all
this from record album jackets)
So, yes, I'd like to know a lot more about Kate Bush.
Thanks,
Henry

| Finally, a KT conference! (KT is what she is informally known by, as
in "Katie" - her first band was called the KT Bush Band). In fact, if
you're clever (or even not so clever) you can find the KT symbol hidden
on every album cover somewhere (except NEVER FOR EVER).
As for video compilations, there's THE SINGLE FILE which you can get
for cheap in the UK and for the price of the national debt in the
States. (The only way to get it in NTSC format is from Japan) The
Single File has the videos for:
Wuthering Heights
The Man With the Child In His Eyes
Them Heavy People
Wow not the version on THE WHOLE STORY
Hammer Horror
Babooshka
Breathing
Army Dreamers
Sat In Your Lap
There Goes a Tenner
Suspended in Gaffa
These are basically all her singles up to 1982. THE WHOLE STORY has
the videos for the songs on the LP, plus the video for "The Big Sky",
and the video for "Wow" is just an amalgam of unrelated footage from
the embarrasing-to-watch 1979 concert video "Kate Bush Live at
Hammersmith Odeon". Highly reccommended, considering Kate was one of
the first artists to consider videos more than just "promo films".
Kate also recently turned 30 on July 30th.
If you like "The Kick Inside" and "Hounds of Love" (no preceding
"The"), "The Dreaming" is going to flip you out from the first pounding
12/8 measure of "Sat In Your Lap". As an official Lord High Mucky-Muck
of the First Church of Our Kate of Perennial Warmth, I can testify
absolutely to its stature as the Best G-D Album Ever Recorded On the
Face of the Earth, SGT PEPPER Doesn't Even Come Close, Just You Wait
And See. No, I'm serious. You think I'm joking. I'm serious!

Yes Scot,
The track your thinking of is "This Womans Work is done" on
the soundtrack of "She's having a Baby". The track is excellent,
but the rest of the album is very average. Also another soundtrack
that Kate has a track on is "Castaway". The whole album is brilliant
with most of the other tracks written & performed by Brian Eno.

| Yes, I second the motion that anyone interested in KT subscribe to
rec.music.gaffa (more commonly known as "Love Hounds").
It appears about once every two days when moderator Doug Alan (MIT
student and keesh dude extraordinaire) is on a roll. It's full of
facts and lots of great? discussions and stuff. They also talk about
more general music topics, though they stay in the realm of the
"alternative".
Correction: Originally titled "Make It Go Away" (which I like better),
the song from "She's Having A John Hughes Film" is "This Woman's Work".
"..is done" never appears in the song.
The song from "Castaway" is called "Be Kind to My Mistakes" and is
fantastic. Mix "Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)" with "Burning
Bridge", add some weird noises, put in a monster fretless bass line,
and then add Kate's phenomenal lyrics/vocals, and get ready to be
humble in the presence of a diety. Yea, verily, she can do no wrong.
Now if they'd only release the damned film in the States!!!
The summer HOMEGROUND is out now, or at least Boston's Tower Records
just got it now. As usual, Peter Fitzgerald-Morris is totally
ambiguous about info concerning the new LP's release date. Ah well.
The most they're venturing is three or four months from now... and
that, to use a clich, is what they ALWAYS say...
Anyone want to venture a guess as to what the next album will be like?
if she'll tour?
if she does, will she do a world tour?

re.5,14-- Joe,
I've noticed the "Kate Bush Live at the Hammersmith Odeon" video at the

Why so?
I've heard others say that "The Dreaming" is the best album ever recorded.
And they were serious, too. I'm waiting eagerly for my order to arrive at the

Ok; What does GAFFA mean?
re.7--Thanks for the pointer to the usenet conference.
re.8,14--Kate Bush Club and Homeground??? Homeground must have something to do
with the like-named cut from "Lionheart". What's the significance?
All--I'm sure that some of the lyrics in KT's songs have more significance
to U.K. listeners than to those of us elsewhere. Perhaps I can fill in some
of the cultural gaps that I've run across, through this conference. For example;
Is KT writing about a real person in "Cloud Busting"?

| This is from memory, so no guarrantees to accuracy...
The Kate Bush Club is run by Kate and family/friends, and was
originally set up to keep the fans in touch with what was happening
and to get feedback from the fans about Kate's music.
They publish a magazine every now and again that has articles by
Kate and other members of the Bush household, and some good photos
of Kate taken by John Carder Bush (who is credited with a lot of
the pictures of Kate you see elsewhere).
HOMEGROUND lays claim to being the longest-running Kate Bush fanzine,
and has been going for five (?) years now. They have general info
on anything that relates to Kate, reviews of new music, etc. It's
run by three dedicated Kate Bush fans somewhere in Kent (NOT near
Gatwick Airport 8*> ) and appears four times a year. Although they
are entirely seperate from the "official" KBC, they are recognised
by Kate and hold the annual KB Convention, at which Kate sometimes
makes an appearance. They also provided the crowd for the Big Sky
video.
I have addresses for both the above at home, and will post them
here next week (I'm going home this weekend) unless anybody beats
me to it.
RE: Cloud Busting.
The story is based on a short story by someone who's name escapes
me at the moment (Any offers ?). The story was in the Book of Dreams.
If you have the video to CB, then it is the book that Kate pulls
out of Donald Sutherland's jacket !!
Hope this is of some help...

161.17 | Cloudbusting | AITG::PARMENTER | Laws don't change by obeying them | Wed Aug 10 1988 14:49 | 29 |
| "Cloudbusting" is based on a "true" story about a man named Wilhelm
Reich. He was a Freudian psychologist who fancied himself a
bio-physicist. He believed that he had discovered a magnificent
new form of energy called Orgone Energy, which was a "life force"
of sorts. So poweerful was this force that it could be detected
on geiger counters, electric meters, etc. even though it was actually
not radiation or electricity (I am *not* making this up).
Orgone energy was a bit of a fad in the forties and fifties, and
Reich achieved a great deal of fame, and sadly a bit of hassle from
the government, mostly for some of his eccentric sexual theories.
One of the properties that was attributed to Orgones was their role
in the formation of rain clouds. Specifically, DOR or "Destructive
Orgone Radiation" was responsible. Reich actually built a contraption
which "drew" the DOR from the clouds, thus he could allegedly disperse
or create rain clouds at will.
Peter Reich, Wilhelm's son wrote a book called "The Book of Dreams"
which goes into some detail about all of this (although my source
was Martin Gardner's wonderful "Fads and Fallacies in the Name of
Science") which Kate read and apparently it had a great deal of
influence on her.
Reich's "science" was non-existant, and although this is the subject
of some debate among Kate fans, I believe that her song and the
accompanying video are an endorsement of Reich's views.

| Beat me to it, Dan! *I* wanned ta tell th' Wilhem story!
Dan's college, Hampshire, has a working Orgone Accumulator, as does
Reich's homestead in Maine, Organon. ("I still dream of Organon").
I don't think "Cloudbusting" is an endorsement by Kate. The song taken
without the video is a simple plea from a little child who has had his
father taken away (which is just what the FDA did). In the video,
well, yeah, ok, we see the cloudbuster actually work, but in Peter
Reich's head at the time, it DID work. Great video, if only Kate had
not tried to be a little boy. I can't beleive she cut her beautiful
locks for THAT.....
"Kate Bush: Live at Hammersmith Odious" - er - "Odeon" is the video I
refer to. It's embarrasing because it's very '70s... tacky, very
showy, with men dancing in big violin costumes, Kate dressed in leather
motorcycle gear, NO shots of the band, and it's filmed on video with
LOTS of closeups, which is not the way you're intended to see it! I
saw a british documentary on the tour and the have filmed excerpts from
the rehearsals and the concerts themselves, and they are TONS better to
watch.

| It's true, I often sit in the Orgone accumulator, sucking up those
powerful rays. I feel like a new man, upon exiting the Orgone
Accumulator. Actually, there's anotehr great song about Orgone
Accumulators called "Orgone Accumulator". It was originally done
by Hawkwind (with Lemmy!) and was covered last year by Pop Will
Eat Itself.
I certainly agree about The Hammersmith Odeon tape. I would have
liked to see the band, since some of the arrangements were intriguing.
In Kate's defense, while the show was tasteless, we must remember
that this was a time when stage excesses for rock concerts were
getting totally out of hand. Compare the HO concert to one of those
Pink Floyd "Wall" shows, and Kate's excesses don't seem nearly as
wretched. Compare it to one of ghastly affairs staged by the
Mtl crowd ("Yeah, F*ck*n' CRE rools!") and it looks quite tasteful.
I *could* do without the dancing violins, and it's a *real* shame
that the version of "James and the Cold Gun" (where the band really
got to cook!) had to have such silly visuals (Kate playing Jesse
James).

too, possibly, I didn't check). Hence, you can pick up that copy

Well, its a very sticky kind of fabric type tape, easy to tear strips
off the roll - no rock band roadie is ever without a trusty roll
of gaffa tape. Its used on stage for sticking trailing wires down
safely, and in the studio for deadening ringy drum sounds

The idea, of course, is that the song is about someone who feels that

161.25 | More KT questions | MSD52::ENMAN | | Mon Sep 19 1988 15:53 | 27 |
| I've been off acquiring and listening to Kate Bush albums. Unfortunately most
cassette albums don't come with the lyrics and even if they did I'd still
have some questions about some of the songs. I hope some of you other KT
fans can answer some of these. Here goes.
On "Never Forever":
The track "Army Dreamers" what is BFPO?
The track "Delius"; Who is Delius? What's this about?
The track "The Wedding List"; Is it based on a true incident?
The track "The Infant Kiss"; Does Kate have children?
On "Lionheart", the track "Coffee Homeground"; Obviously about poisoning, but
is it just a lark or based on a real incident?
On "The Dreaming", the track "The Night of the Swallow"; Evidently about some
clandestine activity involving aircraft. Again, based on a real incident?
There seems to be an Irish influence to some of KT's music. For example,
"The Jig of Life" on "Hounds of Love", the accent she uses in "Army Dreamers"
(at least it sounds Irish to me), use of Irish instruments in "Night of the
Swallow". Has she talked about this?
I've got a lot more questions, but that's enough for now.
Thanks,

Delius was an English composer. I think his first name was
Frederick. Anyway, late in his life he suffered from some
affliction that caused him to have to grunt his compositions to
his servant Fenby.
> The track "The Infant Kiss"; Does Kate have children?
No. I'm not sure about this, but I beleive she's not even married.
(I know, marriage is not a prerequisite to child-bearing.)
About the Irish influence in her music, Kate's mother is Irish.
I don't know if 'Night of the Swallow', 'Coffee Homeground', etc.,
are based on real incidents. Kate gets alot of her ideas from books.

BFPO is the abbreviation for British Forces Post Office this should be

Eric Fenby was Delius' amanuensis after he went blind. I believe that

| The pre-Raphaelites were a group of English painters working in the
second half of the 19th century who painted pictures in the manner
described in -1. They believed Art had gone downhill since the painter
Raphael (400 years ago!) and tried to put it back on course.
These were artists such as Millais, Rossetti, Ruskin. Some of them
had quite scandalous personal lives for their day, such as living
simultaneously with their wife and model.
The modern use of the term relates to women who look like the models
they painted; if you're a pre-Raphaelite woman you should have long
flowing locks, a pale and dreamy look about you, and wear Laura Ashley
clothes.
I wouldn't quite call Liz Fraser of the Cocteaus pre-R, since she's
got short hair, but I suppose you could say that their music is what
a pre-R person might choose to listen to.

161.46 | More bits and pieces from Homeground | NZOV01::WHYTE | Gotta be seen to be believed | Sun Apr 16 1989 03:41 | 30 |
| Hello I have just been sent the latest copy of HOMEGROUND and they seem
to think that the new album will be released in september? Apparantly
the mixing has taken more time than anticipated. As of late february
there were still four tracks to be completed.
There are also some more rumours about why she has taken so long to
complete her new album:
1.that the master tapes to her album were stolen
and that she has had to re-record most of the material again
2. that kate has scrapped all but six of the tracks and started again.
but these are not true.
Some news on releases:
The Whole Story video has been released on CDV(compact disc video)
in england and europe by polygram music 0805041 on the PAL systems.
Has anyone seen the book 'Kate Bush A Visual Documentry'?
Whats it like? It is published by Omnibus Press.
How about this for some news-It was reported that when Sarah Brightman
stepped down from the female lead in Loyd-Webbers Phantom or the Opera,
the name at the top of his list for a replacement was KATE
is'nt that thrilling news?
kate is doing another soundtrack on the movie called "The Chocolate War"
and it features "Running Up That Hill" in it.
Keep tuned for further exciting news...
Lindsay (who gets his info from Andrew his flatmate)

Here's a review of "Kate Bush: A Visual Documentary" that was posted in

Subject: *Another* Kate Biography, MisK., Enya

Really-From: [email protected]
I presume the recent profusion (is two a profusion? it is in this
context!) of Kate biographies is due to the publishers trying to
coincide with the release of KBVI - they should have known better!
Be that as it may, I was innocently browsing through my local bookshop
(looking for a T.Rex bio, incidentally - are there any in print?), when
I was assaulted by "KATE BUSH: A Visual Documentary" by Kevin Cann &
Sean Mayes (a couple of thoroughly disreputable-looking musos, judging
by their pics on the back cover - I liked them immediately!). Seeing
as it was a paperback, I bought it there and then, even though it was 8
pounds 95 (logic? who said anything about logic!).
It's large format (9" x 11.5"), about 100 pages, and _slightly_ more
text than photos. Many of the photos are colour, full page. There are
sidebars on every page of text with smaller photos and a chronology
which roughly relates to the chapter headings.
The style is factual and informative, and the author's prejudices don't
intrude (that could be just because they agree with mine, but I don't
detect any obvious adulatory bias). It _seems_ to be pretty
comprehensive (I don't claim to be an expert, IED and |>oug are welcome
to that position!) It covers much the same ground as Mr. Juby's book
that I reviewed a couple of weeks ago, but its comparative shortness
is due to the lack of the "gossipy" bits and personal opinions that
spoiled that particular work for me.
The photos were almost all new to me - I found some of those of Kate to
be perhaps unflattering, particularly the cover, but it's growing on
me. There are a number of pics of relevant people and places (her
school, the family, Del, etc.) which were interesting.
The best bit (by far, for me) is the appendix of various lists - the
disc(+)ography is the most complete I have yet seen, including notable
bootlegs, all the film work, books and compilation LPs (also the most
up-to-date, including "Sister & Brother" with Midge Ure). There's a
representative list of fanzines (including an address to get info on
Jay's limited-edition photo-collection "Cathy"), and finally some
amusing trivia lists (Kate's favourite artists, likes and dislikes).
Summary: all-in-all, I can't fault it. Recommended - buy it today!

161.51 | Question & Comment... | BASSAL::MILLER | Bush For President...Kate Bush! | Thu Apr 27 1989 01:57 | 19 |
| I was just curious why KT did not provide lyrics for her last two
albums ("Hounds Of Love" & "Whole Story")? I guess I can understand
about W.S. since it's sort of a Greatest Hits album, but why H.O.L.?
On the same subject, does anyone out there by chance have lyrics to any

response back.

| This weeks melody maker and this month's Q have articles on Kate Bush,
the Q one I found most interesting.
Her album was released on Monday, I've got my copy, its really good
though I think I'll need more than the two listens I've currently given
it to get used to it.
There is little of the current synthesiser/CMI/guitar sound, it uses a
lot of Irish and Bulgarian and orchestral string arrangements.
Very different.

I got the new album on monday, and its the only thing I've listened
to this week. Its perhapsnot as obviously commercial as some of the stuff
on hounds, but it may well be a better album. The Trio Bulgarka
are used to stunning effect on side 2, noticably 'rockets tail',
a mad mixture of 'world music' and Gilmours typucal guitar sound
solo. Womans work is emotionally wrenching, Sensual World...
a couple of tracks display some of the obvious irish influence,
noticeably with the uillean pipes (Davey Spillane?). I would recommend
everyone to get this record, one of the most intelligent o the yesar.

161.67 | Reaching Out... | HGOVC::LINDSAYWHYTE | Lindsay Whyte SWS Hong Kong | Tue May 01 1990 13:42 | 31 |
| Hi!
Not many comments about Kate lately, what's happened? Where is she?
What's she up to?
Last thing I heard was that she was in America promoting
"The Sensual World". Have there been any KB specials or appearances in
America?
Anyway the reason I'm writing is that I was wondering whether anyone
has a copy of "Kate Bush complete" (music & lyric book) and if they
could tell me the dates and places Kate toured back in 1979.
Kate did a few TV appearances in England for the promotion of
"The Sensual World". They included "The Wogan Show", "This is Your Life
Nigel Kennedy", and I think there was a special on the making of "The
Sensual World". Did anyone video these? Would it be possible to send
someone a blank video to tape these for me?
Also has EMI put out a recent video to coincide with the album
release?
If someone could fill me in on all my questions I would be most
grateful.
Thanks in advance,
Andrew Brodie

version of "My Lagan Love", I've been trying to get hold of it

"Cloudbusting" was released on EMI in October 1985, catalogue number
12KB2 (12" version) and deleted in August 1989, which means you can't
order it in the shops.
Ex-chart singles such as these are often available from mail order
companies advertised in the music press, you know the ones you send a

| I don't know if Kate's new CD has been released yet, but I think
I heard a cut off it. The song was entitled "Eat the Music" I believe.
I'll have to keep my eyes out.

| Here in Colo. Spgs., her new release, "The Red Shoes", became available
Nov. 7th, on cassette and CD. Haven't seen anything about the new
film. Bought the CD for my husband, who's a big fan of hers, for his
birthday (11/23) so I don't know how good all of it is, but I've heard
a few cuts on our NPR/college station, KRCC, that sounded fantastic.
Don't remember the titles, as I was driving at the time and only caught
the artist's name, not the song titles.
Anxious to hear it all.
Sue (new noter, old fan, too)
