154.0. "Conference proposal" by ERIC::SALLITT (Dave @RKG or LZO) Mon Jul 25 1988 16:32

I'm putting this note in here as I feel it's a subject related to
    this conference.

I've been reading/writing to the AUDIO conference for a year or
so, and as far as I know the European contributors could be counted
on the fingers of one hand. I don't know if this is because there's
not much European interest (I don't believe that), or that the
naturally heavy USA-bias puts people off, as they can't see the
relevance to what they are using.

Does the panel think there would be sufficient demand for a EURO_AUDIO
or UK_AUDIO conference? I'm thinking of something along the lines
of the US-based conference, which deals with anything from Walkpersons
to expensive hifi, and from in-car audio to advice on repairs,
upgrading or buying new systems - but with a European bias.

If there is enough interest, does anyone have the system resources
to support a conference? My local node doesn't, but I wouldn't mind
    helping out with moderating, etc.

    All feedback welcome.

    Dave

    Dave,

Interesting topic - you are coming across a similar problem that
I did (unrelated to this conference), in that many of the conferences
are quite US oriented, and don't get many people from this side
of the pond contributing for one reason or another.

I don't see any problems with what you want to do - finding a home
could be a problem. The rest (I would think), like informaing Galactic
Notes File Control of it's existance, is easy.

    Hope this helps,

    David.

What am I, VAXnotes consultant? :-)

In my experience, the only way to go is to try. I have found
that the real problem is "critical mass", ie you need sufficient
people participating to make it work. This is especially true of
conferences which are duplicates of US ones. Of course, I am very
strongly in favour of EURO_* and UK_* type conferences, but sometimes
there is insufficient interest to support two conferences.

So, go for it! I don't know where you could host it, though.
Far be it for me to tell you how to set up a conference, but if
you want to discuss it off-line, either in person or mail, I'd be
happy to - I have had some experience in that area.
