A friend of a friend of a friend of a friend who's brother once
went out with my sister's history teacher told me the other day
that this movie was really good and well worth a look in if your
a fan of the diminutive one. He said the visuals were real good
and the muzac excellent but then HE is a real prince fan and i
doubt if this review could be trusted. However one thing he also
mentioned of interest is that the place really wasn't busy and that
was a Friday night, hmmm maybe Princey wincey's fans are to busy
looking round Soho sex shops to go and see their hero.
I fink i'll wait for the video and watch it with twelve pints
inside of me.

148.2 | The Purple One ... | GOSSIP::COHEN | Keep Music Live | Mon Jul 18 1988 17:39 | 32 |
|
I saw the film last Friday, and yes, the cinema wasn't exactly bursting
at the seems. However, it is running for 4 weeks, so it should
play to quite a few people by the end of it's run.
The bottom line is .... it's one of the best concert films I've
ever seen!!!
Apart from the start, which portrays a back alley scene with The
Purple One, Cat and some other band members, it'a *all* concert
footage from the 'Sign Of The Times' tour.
It's a shame that this didn't make it to London ... the set really
is a fantastic collage of street scenes and neon lights - very similar
to the album cover. It would have looked brilliant live.
Prince plays some great solos on a number of the songs, and they
all sound really good. Most of the album is played, with 'The Cross'
being one of the highlights for me.
His stage movements are great and he can move too. He also plays
a snatch from 'Little Red Corvette' and a Charlie Parker tune.
The only reservation is the inclusion of the 'U Got The Look' video
in the middle of the film, with Sheen Easton. It used the same
stage set, but as it's a video, he mines the whole thing, which
looks out of place with the rest of the performance.
All done with Dolby stereo of course. I intend to see it again,
if I can .... catch it!
David.

Have you read the NME report on his Paris Gig? It's good
reading and makes it sound like THE concert of the year! Not
to be missed.

You are right, but I think it would be wrong to compare the two,
which needless to say is what will happen over the next few weeks.
Both are most definately looking for different things from their
music.........anyway you should all know he's so good after all
the raving Mazzer and I made about his last shows over here!
RE: .5
Mazzer, surprised you've not seen the movie yet....I'm going to
see his last two dates at Wembley...I can't wait although after
last years fiasco I'll not believe it until he's on stage. I read the
NME review which looked great and did no more than wet the appetite,
nice to see he still plays his old stuff I just hope he plays 'It's

us know '....what he was like....!'

I just haven't had the time to see the movie but I'm certainly
gonna try.
With regard to Michael Jackson v Prince, I think the only comparison
is that their both great dancers and talented song writers.
I've always liked Michael Jackson because of his talent in writing
songs and his great dancing techniques so as far as I'm concerned so
what if he prefers Chimps to humans or likes to wile away his time
in an oxygen tent (Yes I read the SUN!!). He's a great entertainer
who no matter whats written about him doesn't take the bait!!
With regard to Prince as far as I'm concerned he's my MAIN MAN.
I don't believe this man has even begun to show us what he's capable
of. Like Michael he doesn't give interviews and because of that
he is the target for all the C**p we see in the papers about his
*weird* lifestyle. All I know is that when he's on stage he has
the ability to keep you hooked until he's finished performing.
Well nuff said about Wacko Jacko and the Purple One.
I'm off to see Michael on Saturday and Prince on Monday so I'll
give you my verdict next week on who I think rules the roost.

The Black Album has been advertised in NME over the last 3/4
weeks..I've not as yet tried to get hold of a copy, although he
does play 2/3 tracks from it in his current Live Show.
I would like to hear what people like about his music, favourite
album, individual songs and so on.......and if anyone has listened
to any of his side kicks (Sheila E, Family, Jill Jones etc)
How serious are you about Prince out there how can you falter someone
with lines such as...

RE: .12
Comparing Prince and Hendrix is like comparing chalk and cheese
- it gets ya nowhere in my opinion.
Prince's guitar is very Hendrixy at times - nothing wrong with that.
It can also sound completely different - "The Cross" from "Sign
Of The Times" is very much in the Jorma Kaukonen style (J. Airplane).
His music is a great blend of rock, funk and soul - it *use* to be rare
for an artist like this to appeal to a predominantly white rock
audience, but not now. Hendrix was one of the first - he had an
almost exclusively white audience.
"Around The World In A Day" is a great album too. My fave song
of his is "Raspberry Berret" - brilliant.

Prince does sound very Hendrixy and even looks like him. I
read recently that he is so eager to be cast as the lead part
of Hendrix in a film about his life that he has taken to dressing
up like Jimmi wherever he goes!
My favourite albums are Purple Rain, Sign O The Times, Around the
World.
I would have given Parade the thumbs down but now I've seen
"Under The Cherry Moon" I find I really like it.
Favourite Tunes: Head, Sexy Dancer, 1999, Little Red Corvette,
America, Controversy, Gonna be a beautiful night, Purple Rain,
I would die 4 U, Nikki, The Cross, Kiss, Girls and Boys and ....
....... (loads more).
I haven't heard anything by Sheila E other than Bell of St. Mark
and in the film "Krush Groove" she did a track on stage but I can't
remember what it was called. Other than her I've never heard any
of the others apart from the 'Time' - spelling is probably wrong
- but its the group that was in Purple Rain that Prince used to
front, if their music is anything like in the film I'm sure I'd
like them.
Has anyone else see Purple Rain or Under the Cherry Moon? What
did you think? Which was your favourite? Why?

It was after seeing Purple Rain that I started to listen heavily
to Prince. Dirty Mind is a great album despite the fact the songs
are all so short, after that Around the World is so diverse and
still sounds fresh 3 years after release. If Sign of the Times was
condensed to a single album it would be his best work....so I think
Purple Rain takes it 4 me...with 'She's Always in my Hair' as fave
single
I've not seen 'Under the Cherry Moon' but I do have copies of his
Purple Rain and Parade tours on video. The band that featured in
'Purple Rain' was THE TIME....the group split up soon after with
Morris Day going solo....Jimmy Jam becoming the mastermind behind
the Tabu record label (Alexandar O'Neal), and the others becoming
v. successful else where. Of the women Sheila E has released 3 albums
but now spends most her time backing Prince..whilst recently Jill
Jones has released an album, (she was the Blonde waitress from Purple
Rain) that is well worth a listen.
Less waffle and roll on the tour...!
Q: Will Prince upstage Alexandar O'Neal and wheel a water bed on
stage for his show ?

| hello purple people
I've been a Prince fan since ... a while back. Staying at the Ramada
in Reading one week, looking for a little light entertainment, took
out Purple Rain from the video library. I liked it so much, I bought
the video (eventually, once I actually had a video to play it on...)
and the elpee too. Also in my video collection is Prince and the
Revolution Live - a lot of good stuff on that.
Sign of the Times (LP)? I would say there are very few single LPs which
have more than half memorable tracks. Sign of the Times is a double and
every one is a winner. (That hasn't happened in my record collection
since the White Album... even that had a couple duff ones)
I've not got Wembley tickets, more's the pity, and may not get to
see the movie, but it sounds great.
Sheila E has some really good tracks (e.g. Belle of St Mark), but
there's something missing; I video'd a late-night concert of hers on
the TV and it wasn't exactly earth-shattering. I've heard a few tracks
from The Family which were pretty good, too. I'd like to hear some more
from The Time, too.
He also writes neat songs for other folks, e.g. Bangles' Manic Monday,
and probably more if I took the trouble to look.
Not bad for a beginner, eh?

'The Black Album'
I managed to borrow a copy of 'The Black Album' this weekend. The
tracks I heard consisted mostly of heavy funk/dance tracks of which
the content is sexual/erotic. The only differing tracks are 'When
2 R in Love' an good Wrap/funk mix track and one rather wierd 'song'
with Prince's voice being tweaked to a similar 'Camille' type effect
but rather deeper.
Having listened to it a couple of times, I found it initially more
digestable than Lovesexy but none of the tracks stood out a great
deal, with the exception of Superfunkykalifragisexy (!)....very
much an album for a Prince aficionado.

| Below is a passage from 'The Revolution' handout which was available
after Tuesday nights show at Wembley.
LOVESEXY..
'The feeling you get when you fall in love not with a girl or boy
but with The Heavens Above'.
To experience Lovesexy is to confront dreams made real. Lovesexy
is Prince's best work yet, if only for it's unashamed directness.
The music reveals so much yet hides so much more.
Prince takes chances revealing himself and not just another image,
it is his soul that he bares for all to see on the album sleeve
and not his body. Lovesexy tells us more than any interview ever
could. His dreams, his beliefs, his visions are all plain to see
for anyone who is willing to look. For those who experience the
feeling, the concert becomes a vivid manifestation of the album.
No longer a show as a vehicle to the music, this is Prince, the
dreams, the beliefs, his visions.....his soul.
Prince's concerts have always been spectacular but this transcends
anything you've ever seen before. Everyone will leave with a sense
of having experienced something special and exciting, some though
will leave with a feeling that is almost spiritual. That feeling
is LOVESEXY.
**************************
This just about sums up the man, his music and his concerts. I
went to see him on Monday as you know by my report but Tuesday night
was even better - much the same layout but he had that extra 'get
up and go' about him which everyone in Wembley sensed. I can honestly
say that the Tuesday concert is the best I have *ever* been to!!!!

Yes the stage is bang in the middle of the arena, I would say that
the only restricted views are going to be the seats on the sides
of the arena right at the back!
On Monday night we had seats at the end where the stage normally
is and the view was ok.
On Tuesday night we had seats on the left hand side in the

All in all wherever you sit you should get a good view because he

good view.

Mike,
I admit I'm an ardent Prince Fan so I'm *slightly* biased! But
my husband who has always maintained that he detested Prince and
thought he was a wimp was overwhelmed by the concert at Wembley
last week and thought it was one of THE best concerts he has ever
seen!
OK some of the sound in the first half was a bit dodgy, acoustics
not quite right , but to be honest you could forgive these
few teething problems because the rest of the set was *brilliant*.
What we witnessed wasn't just a 'get up and play' concert it was
more like a cabaret come live video set up.
As for the music press - did you really expect anything else??
Go and see him and judge for yourself! I'm sure you'll be pleasantly

Anyway the show was outstanding, the best show I have ever seen,
I still can't stop raving about it.....and I know it was good cause
my girlfriend was reluctant to say the least to go...with comments
like " what do I want to see that poof for ? "...so I put her
through the works....we watched Sign O the Times in the afternoon
then the show.....the day after at home thought I'd listen to 'Dirty
Mind' but I can't find it, so I try 'Lovesexy' that's not there
in the end it transpires she's pinched my Prince collection and
is now a 'Believer'
I'll write a review a little later........

| It was a beautifull night
*************************
Yeah,Prince at the NEC, It was certainly one of the most spectacular
shows I've seen.We were a couple of rows back,by the keyboards.My
only moan was that the sound quality was not up to the standard
of the visuals.Having a lot of poncing around on stage is all very
worthwhile, but I didn't go to see a live video. During the first
half, during Housequake,I very nearly gave up-it was like having
your ears assaulted with a steamhammer, only by the intro could we
tell what song it was that was being played.A lot of other people
seemed to feel the same way.Maybe the sound was better further
back,or perhaps its the price you pay for a round stage.
The second half seemed a lot better, the sound problems seemed
to have been sorted out a little, and things took off with 'The Cross'.
After this the evening went from very good to heavenly, and much
boogie did go on. The light show was fantastic, and the choreography
was superb,Prince played the round stage to its full advantage. The
end of Alphabetn St,with him and the girls vanishing on the car
was well done, and a second encore really should have been played.
Maybe next time he'll put some more effort into the sound, and
make the entire evening wonderful. Does anyone have a full set list?
I'm lookinh out already for tapes of the show.

| Was this Friday or Saturday @ NEC, in previous two replies??
I was there Saturday, and the sound early in part 1 was the worst I
have heard at the NEC, maybe worst anywhere. Sound in the round at the
NEC can be OK; e.g. I thought Stevie Wonder last year was excellent.
But then Stevie's more "just" a musician, not so much a showman. I was
in last-choice seats for Prince; it took me a minute or so to recognise
some fairly well-known toons, like U Got the Look. But part 2 did get a
whole lot better.
Maybe the sound engineer went to the Felix Pappalardi School for
Industrially Deafened Soundmen - "louder, I still can't hear it".
My ears finally stopped ringing this morning (Monday, show Saturday).
I was listening to Sheila E at one point, wondering how I could tell
the difference between her and a smart drum machine (in terms of
sound...). And then a little while later, she's prancing around the
stage, and the "drums" are still going. Or maybe I was confused, but
that's the way it looked (and sounded) to me. "Is it Real, or is it
Memorex?"
maybe next tour we'll get less of a show, more of the music; that
could be quite good too.
cheers

I didn't go to the show.
A friend who did reckoned a *lot* of it was taped, especially the
drums.

| I don't think all that much was taped, the sound quality was too
bad for it to have been! The keyboard players spent some time
meessing with what looked like drum machines and sequencers,it only
takes a few seconds to load a new drum pattern from disk (just ask
New Order), and Sheila's drum solo was certainly not taped.

A great cover 'You don't have to be Prince if you want to
dance ...'.
Does anyone know which group covered Madonna's 'Get Into The
Grove' at about the same time time in a similar style.
