Julia,
I think I read something in N.M.E. (the gospel according to!!!)
that they were preparing a new platter for release soon. Could
be wrong though, but I think they are still going.

I've only recently got into Talk Talk. Bought "The Colour of Spring"
a few months ago, and very recenlt bought "It's my life" which I
was a little disappointed with.
Good thing about them is that they are the only 80's band I know
to use the Mellotron!!
What is the other album like ?

| Yep, the 1st LP was called "Talk Talk" which, apart from their first
single `Talk Talk' also had their second `Today'.
I've got this on tape and, comparing it with their later releases,
seems the best of the lot; certainly more varied musically.
They use a mellotron eh? Now that *is* lo-tech!

One question, what on earth is a mellotron??

| It was a keyboard instrument used in the late 60s / early 70s which
consisted of lots of tapes. If you selected, say, violin, and played
E, the violin E tape was played - mellotrons had a few instruments
and LOTS of tape!

The Colour of Spring really is a superb album. I just wish my car
stereo could take it. Must remember not to play it when there are
passengers in the car!
The mellotron was one of the first synthesisers to arrive. They
were most popularly used by late 60's, early 70's pop groups like
King Crimson and Genesis. I think they consisted of tape sounds
playing through some sort of rotating speaker or something like
that. They make a nice mellow sort of long sustained sort of sound.
I'll try to find out which track it is on.
Any opinions on the other (or any) album.
Cheers.
Mark.

| Have just played the 1st. Album Tape only to discover that it's
called "The Party's Over".
Hope this saves the embarassment of asking for non-existent albums.

As it uses `natural' taped sound, it can't be a synth.

>As it uses `natural' taped sound, it can't be a synth.
Well, there has been a whole family of synthesisers that emulate
natural sounds by digitally sampling them. Surely the taped sounds
are just the same sort of thing? Whether or not it uses "natural"
sounds, it does not produce the sounds in a "natural" (I would
substitute the word acoustic) way.
Does anyone have any opinions on the third album, compared to "The
Colour of Spring" ?
Mark.

134.12 | Well, you did ask,,, | KERNEL::JWILLIAMS | | Tue Jul 05 1988 14:48 | 38 |
| Hang on, I thought the third album was the 'The Colour of
Spring'?..Time for a complete discography me thinks.
Right, "The Party's Over" came out in 1982, followed by "It's my
life" in 84 and finally, "The Colour of Spring" in 86.
Their first album I thought was more tuned to the singles charts
as they were the group's 'poppiest' records (Talk Talk, Today etc)
but did include 'Candy' which was great.
"It's my Life" showed Talk Talk producing weightier records (could
this be an appearance by the infamous mellotron?). "It's my Life"
, the single taken from the record was absolutely brilliant, the
full effect being achieved by playing the stereo really loud. "Renee"
is also absolutely gorgeous, along with "Such a shame".
The "Colour of Spring" is their best I agree. Looking at the credits,
it seems the mellotron creeps into "I don't believe in you", and
"Give it up" (not that I would have noticed!). The best singles
being "Happiness is easy", "Life is what you make it" and the brilliant
"Living in another world". At a couple of songs, it got too heavy
for me, namely "April 5th" and " Chameleon Days" but perhaps I'm
just not cultured enough?
Generally, I wish Mark Hollis would sing a bit clearer. Without
the words, I'd be stuck for what he was singing about - or is that
meant to be added mystery? Added to that, when you do know the
words, they don't really mean anything, just jumbled phrases. Or
am I being thick, not to realise the potential profoundness of it
all.
I would say, they are due for another release soon as two years
has gone by and then seem to do things in two year spans. Me money's
ready........

| RE: -1
My understanding of Synthesized sound is thus:
A violin produces a note by vibrating a string
A Synth produces a note by the manipulation of oscillators etc.
Therefore the violin is `natural'
Samplers must fall somewhere in between.

At the risk of straying from the point:
>A violin produces a note by vibrating a string
>A Synth produces a note by the manipulation of oscillators etc.
>Therefore the violin is `natural'
Yes, I completely agree. Taping a sound and manipulating it is no
different than sampling the sound digitally in that both sounds
are "messed about" with electronically. Therefore they are both
synthesised. Pardon me being pedantic.
For those of you interested in Mellotrons, there is a notes file
devoted to them!!! Press KP7 or SELECT to add them to your list.
Now back to Talk Talk.
I shall have to buy the Party's over, if only for the cover!

| Even after reading two newspaper reviews describing songs on the new
Talk Talk album as "dirges", "funeral marches", and "art rock at its
worst", I was still looking forward to it.
I was not disappointed! Their trend of a pared-down sound continues.
This album may take a bit of getting used to but it is worth it!
What do other folks think of the new Talk Talk?

| hello !
I say "Colour of spring" is marvellous. Fantastic music.
But the fourth album, "Eden" or something like that,
is awful. Of course, there is some magnificient parts,
but in general, I was very disappointed. I expected
much better.

| After a long wait, I bought the Eden Cd. I thought it was crap -
not a patch on the other three, I took it back and changed it for
something else after a week. I would recomend any Talk Talk fan
to give it a miss.
