Anyone out there have info on a new CD released in the UK called
"Tougher Than the Rest" (I believe) and containing stuff recorded
live at his LA concert on April 27? I know they've got his slow
version of "Born to Run" on there.

What else is on there? I might be asking for a kind soul to buy
one for me & send it over?? I can pay in sterling so you (whoever
you may be) wouldn't have to worry about getting rid of a few
    dollars.

Sue, I saw a new 4-track CD single advertised in the music press
last week. The tracks featured are 'Tougher Than The Rest',
'Roulette', 'Born To Run' and 'Be True' - the last two tracks are
previously unavailable live versions, no doubt recorded during the
U.S. leg of the tour. If you need a copy, please let me know.

What can you tell me about an FM broadcast of one of his European
gigs in early July? Any idea where it's from?

    Hi Doug,

The broadcast will be on Sunday, July 3, beginning at 11:30am(here)
and it's coming from Stockholm who are 6 hrs ahead of us. We will
get it on either WBCN or WAAF (I forget which) in the Boston area
and I know it's being aired in the NYC area on WNEW. Why do you
    ask?

    > If you need a copy, please let me know.

Thank you, kind sir! I'd love it. How much do you want?

Sue, I ask about the FM broadcast 'cos I'd LOVE to locate some kind
soul in the U.S. who would tape it for me - I'm not aware of any
plans for transmission in the U.K., although no doubt it will be
going out all over the rest of Europe. Is the entire show planned
to be broadcast, or is it just the first couple of hours?

About the 'Tougher Than The Rest' CD single, I would like to put
you in touch with a BRILLIANT mail-order outfit in England,
    namely :-

Adrians Records, 36 High Street, Wickford, Essex SS12 9AZ.

They'll have it, along with a host of other Springsteen stuff from
all over the world. The disc costs 3.99, but I'm not sure about
the extra for postage and packing. You should write to them first
and ask for a copy of their current catalogue - this costs 2.50,
but believe me, it's well worth it. It's absolutely crammed full
of records, tapes, CD's and videos covering an amazing range of
artists. Chances are if you're missing that limited edition poster
sleeve 7" from 1984, they'll have it it! Best of luck!

Tell you what...if we are home on that day (and I should know
soon) I'll tape it for you. It's a long holiday (4th of July,
    yeah, yeah,yippee) weekend & we haven't decided what we're
doing yet - but I'll let you know.

I haven't heard to the contrary, so I imagine they'll broadcast
the whole thing. If they can broadcast for 8 hours from London
last Sunday, I don't see why they wouldn't do a whole Bruce show.

    Bad news, Sue.

According to everything I've read and heard (and the people in the
DREGS::MUSIC file seem to have heard the same info), only Bruce's
first set (about 1 1/2 hours) will be broadcast. The total
broadcast will be about 2 1/2 hours long, including some
    interviews, etc.

Sue, I heard on (BBC) Radio 1 this morning that they too are
broadcasting the Stockholm gig on July 3rd.....but only for an hour
and a half! The DJ didn't say whether it was the first 90 mins.
or otherwise, but like you said, if they can broadcast for eight
hours for Nelson Mandela, why can't they do four (or so) for Broooce?

Incidentally, I also heard that his first U.K. gig at Villa Park,
Birmingham was absolutely brilliant - played for three and three
quarter hour, and apparently almost brought the house down with
the encores. Makes a change to hear a report like that as opposed
to the rather mixed ones from some of the U.S. dates.
70.14Not written yet, I've been taping for a friend!JUNIOR::CHILTONForget Pooh & Garfield, Gumby & Pokey RuleWed Jun 22 1988 14:5121
Dougie, According to Alan we'll only get an hour and a half the
same as you. But I'm glad you'll be able to hear it for yourself
    though.

As for the Aston Villa concert - I'm hoping some of my cousins who
live within two blocks of the Villa ground will send sny local reviews
and write and tell me anything they can.

    > Makes a change to hear a report like that as opposed
    > to the rather mixed ones from some of the U.S. dates.

You know, I've heard a lot of people say his performance/music isn't as
good this time 'round, that he's not the same 'ol Bruce. Well,
I think he just "grew up" that's all, changed his direction. If people
stayed the same you'd soon get tired of them. I see the changes
as a kind of natural progression.

Besides, what with him being a home town boy to me, in my eyes
    he can do no wrong!

70.16"God have mercy on the man, who doubts what he's sure of"AYOV28::DROBBUnwashed and somewhat slightly dazedMon Jul 25 1988 15:4021
Sue, indeed I did tape the broadcast, although unfortunately not
in stereo...which is a pity. However, I quite enjoyed the part
of the show which they chose to let us hear, but I have to say that
having seen various listings of the songs he's performing on this
tour, I think I'd've appreciated the second half of the show more.

What more than made up for this (minor) disappointment, was a TV
special on Broooce last Monday. It was shown on BBC1, but the credits
at the end showed it to be an MTV 'Music Box' Special. Anyway,
it contained some really good interview clips where Bruce talked
very openly about a variety of issues almost entirely connected with
his music. Plus, loads of live clips from tours past and present
together with some sparse but excellent promos which (believe it
or not) I hadn't seen before - stuff like "Brilliant Disguise",
"One Step Up" and "Tunnel Of Love". All'n'all a pretty decent 50
    mins. or so!

I take it that this has already been shown in the U.S. etc. - any
    comments anyone???

Oh, and I meant to ask.....right at the end of the video for "Tunnel
Of Love" you see Bruce strolling through an amusement park past
a sign that says 'This Is Not A Dark Ride'. I've seen this on the
back of some of the tour T-shirts going around - I assume that it's
an American phrase, and has something to do with the attractions
in a fairground or something similar, but can somebody tell why
it should appear on Broooce's tour shirts?

Never thought I'd admit this, but I was sort of disappointed in
his performance during that first half.

As for the sign saying "This Is Not a Dark Ride", it could be that
it is a warning posted outside a spook/funhouse for the benefit
of folks who are afraid of the dark. Haven't you ever bought a
ticket to go into a spookhouse only to find when you get in there
that you literally can't see a hand in front of you? I don't know
about you, but I don't like *that*; it seems dangerous to me.

A "Tunnel of Love" (ride) can be pretty dark, too.

Sue, thanks for the input concerning 'This Is Not A Dark Ride' -
I'd kinda figured that it probably meant just what it says, but
I just wanted to check in case there was a cryptic, hidden meaning
    behind it.

Another thing I meant to ask about the current tour is for opinions
about the new songs being featured, e.g. "Light Of Day", "Half Man
Half Monkey", "Have Love Will Travel" etc. I've personally only
heard the first of these titles, and thought it was pretty good.
Does anyone know if there are plans for these songs to appear on
a future Broooce album, or is he just trying out new stuff for the
sake of changing the set a little from city to city?

If you are refering to the possibility of another Amnesty Gig on
Saturday September 3rd, then the news is that, at the moment, there are
no plans to hold another gig. There were suggestions that pressure was
exerted in certain quarters to try and get the fight postponed for this
reason. These suggestions were denied by Amnesty Int. I don't think
this situation will change somehow, but you never know.

    Hope this helps,

Actually the live version turns out to be the B-side of Tougher

I've just bought the Bruce Springsteen Video Anthology 1978-
    1988 and am *very* disappointed.

While it's true it is a collection of his videos (both 'staged'
and live concert footage) I was disappointed that there wasn't
any commentary or transition provided between videos...one fades
    out, the next begins.

The biggest change in his style can be seen when, after "Atlantic
City" finishes, the next video in the sequence is "Dancing in the
Dark", the *most* blatantly commercial video he's done.

In putting this video together, he gone for the big bucks, pure
and simple, and I'm really disappointed as I thought he was sort
    of above that temptation.

and it has to be said that CHIMES OF FREEDOM and the acoustic version

I know that with the (in)famous box set not even three years old,
it's highly improbable that he would have released another live

and on this e.p., it could've been a memorable set.

of a ticket (approx 2,000 more). If anyone knows where i could get 2
tickets, please drop me a mail message. i would be very grateful.
