68.0. "Dire Straits Concerts 8th and 9th of June" by FORTY2::WATKINS (Get Down Shep!!!) Sun May 15 1988 17:54

 Hi everyone,

Dire Straits are planning on doing two warm-up concerts before the Nelson
Mandela show in June. These will be at the Hammersmith Odean, London, on
Wednesday the 8th and Thursday the 9th of June.

Tickets are ONLY available through the DS Infomation Service so if anyone
is interested in going please let Craig Cockburn (ext. 830-4510 or e-mail
MARVIN::COCKBURN) know as quickly as possible. He'll be able to send off
for the tickets, arrange transport etc.

The band will be playing virtually the same set as at Wembly i.e. this
will not be a full DS set though it hope they're try out a few alternative
 songs as well.

Tickets cost 10.00 each. However the DS Info. Service will not accept
payment by cheque due to lack of time, so a slight additional charge towards
a postal order should be expected.

 Marc.

P.S. Craig will be out of the office until Tuesday.

    Interesting,

There are now four notes about Dire Straits in this topic, and one
    says that they are Crap!!!!

I think that there is a message here, even Erasure get more coverage

No, I disagree. Knopfler (aka DS) was (and from time to time still is)
a very gifted lyricicst (not to mentin musician.

However, after nn years it is inevitable that:

    1. There is sufficient material to judge later vs. earlier stuff
    2. To some extent a musician repeats hmself
    3. Tastes change and audiences become interested in others
    4. Other performers build on to what the original performers started.
    5. Slop-heads become disenchanted because the performer develops (or
    not).

Knopfler still has the ability to surprise and delight. At the time
they first became popular, DS stood head and shoulders above the
mediocrity then around (disco, if my failing memory serves me).

Go away and _listen_ to the lyrics to some tracks on the first album
such as "Belladonna", "In the Gallery" or "Down to the Waterline", or
    listen to the lyrics to "Fade to Black" on the last album;

Then you may have something more interesting to say that " Always were
    poo"

It's like slagging off the Royal Family, of England Cricket Team.

What I want to know is When was the last time that Mark Knobfler
laughed. (I think that this complaint has rubbed off on some of his
    groupies)

P.S. It was Mark Knobflop that said that all he did now-a-days was
please the fans in his music. If that ain't sellin' out then I don't
    know what is.

Actually, I think many people would agree with slagging off both the

<68.6> Not sure what _you_ mean by "selling out".

Selling out the fans - he is supplying what they want (your quote)
Selling out his talent - it still comes through; though it's true he
    frequently uses Knopfler clichs.

"all he did now-a-days was please the fans in his music"

I understood that "Neck and Neck" and "Missing Presumed Having a Good
Time" were his response to the above feeling.

And no, I'n not a member of the DS fan club, and have never seen them
live; I just appreciate well-crafted music by gifted musicians. And
defining gifted musician is a whole new can of worms each with a "worm

When a band goes on a world tour, attended by up to circa 7M people it
will always create critizism against that 'success' from those who don't
appreciate the music that created the bands success.

It is unfortunate, but human nature never the less, that some criticism
will be aimed personally at band members for doing what they are good
at and enjoy doing (c 7M peoples idea of 'good') by those who do not
    appreciate the music played.

The next reply might probably say something like their 'enjoyment'
comes from the money that Philips/Phonogram fill their pockets with.
To the prospective auther of that note, I hope you soon start to believe
that, to a lot more people than you realize, there are many more
satisfying rewards in life than money. eg X0,000 fans, young and old,
applauding a performance that not only the audience enjoyed listening
to but the band enjoyed playing.

Jim, knowing your taste in music, I'm amazed you even considered
listening to any dire straits. Let alone bowing to commercial pressure.

I know two people that recorded the concert but as I'm leaving Reading
on Saturday, I can't really be of much help to Diana. Anyone else???

I have no problem with bands being successful. If 7M people want to
watch Dire Straits live, then fine for them.

I don't really care whether Mark and the boys get a kick out of the
mega-bucks they make, or the ego-trip from having 7M adoring fans; I
still find them boring these days.

that, to a lot more people than you realize, there are many more

No-one knows how good it feels to get paid cash, for playing music
infront of an audience that is really into it more than me.

Doesn't stop D S from being boring, and frankly very very overrated
as writers etc. They (or rather Mark K) do keep many good sesion guys
in work so that is one good thing.

Rich,

Jim, knowing your taste in music, I'm amazed you even considered
listening to any dire straits. Let alone bowing to commercial pressure.

That was *way* back, when I was doing my A-levels I think, I wasn't really that
interested in music then, but was just starting to try to find what I liked...
I thought I'd try DS because they seemed to be everywhere and one of my friends
liked them... unfortunately I found the LP *extremely tedious*...

They're just like Bald Collins et al, I don't mind them being mega-famous, just
I can't see why (in DS's case), when the [present] music is so bland. Perhaps a
case of many fans who remember them before??? (I don't know what they were like
before, Bro's In Arms put me off!).

Your answer seems to present inverse bias compared with the ones slagging them
off - my (& others') replies I'm sure, were not aimed at them because of their
success at all. I wouldn't slag off, say, Curve because they're music is pretty
listenable, same for Jesus Jones etc... same for Pink Floyd... but I will slag
off DS because they *are* boring. I'd slag off The Mission too although a
Goth is *supposed* to like them (because they're crap too)...

Hope I said what I meant, although in an incredibly verbose way!

68.21DS/CD - till death do us part?CSESUP::CROOKDBilly WhizzWed Jun 24 1992 20:3430
RE: .-1 Nice one Dougs. :-)

Rich - this is going against all my DS loyalties but that 7M figure
just hasn't materialised apparently. Wasn't the Australia part a bit of
a downer? And I also hear that they had to cancel South America.
Although, the South America part had to be cancelled because it was
going to be too expensive to cart all the gear over there.

On the subject of Brothers In Arms, I agree that the album does become
tedious after a while. I feel that the older stuff, up to and including
Making Movies and especially the eponymous debut album, are much more
lasting. I hardly ever play Brothers In Arms now, but those early ones
are always near the front of my collection. Haven't got bored of On
    Every Street yet though....

But as MK said in the recent VOX interview, he just doesn't care that
they haven't reached that 7M target. He's still enjoying himself, and
so are the fans that do come. All he's worried about is the money it's
costing him to do it. So if it's costing that much, he must still
enjoy it, and so good for him.

Dire Straits will always be associated with Yuppies because they were
an integral part of the CD revolution. Not through their own doing, but
because their 1985 tour and BIA coincided with the launch of the format
by Philips, and also because Philips own Phonogram, which is DS' label.
They were just the best vehicle around to give CD that launch. I wonder
how different it might have been if the CD/Brothers In Arms connection
    hadn't been made?

    Dale.

I sympathise with Diana's comments. Diana asked a perfectly
straightforward question about a videotape, and got treated to a
tedious discussion which by implication maligned her taste in asking
for the tape in the first place.

This kind of behaviour might conceivably be expected if Diana was a
regular contributor to this conference (although it would still be
pretty tedious), but she isn't a regular contributor. To draw a
parallel, it's quite reasonable to make jokes at your friends' expense,
but do the same to a stranger in the street, and you'll probably get
    your head kicked in.

Perhaps I should have stamped on this a bit more heavily earlier on.
You can certainly expect me to do so next time.

I did write quite a long note to which Trevor replied, but when I
thought about it I deleted it because I felt upset at what had
    happened.

The essence of my original note follows and this will explain why
Trevor wrote his note. I felt very sad that all I wanted was to please
someone I loved and most of the 'help' was so negative. I had felt that
whatever somebody asked would be respected and if you couldn't help you
would just read the next note. But I would not want to ask in here
again after this. That is sad because Digital used to be a helpful
company and you could feel safe in writing a note, and now you aren't.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
This is what I had written:

I asked a simple question in a notesfile where I thought I might find
    somebody to help me.

I never read such a load of rubbish ( well most of it ).

Is this such a clique in here that you criticise people for asking a
question. My son was at the concert and I recorded the music for him.
I was disappointed my recording was not of good quality as I wanted to
give him a surprise. He loved the concert - had a wonderful time -
especially since I gave him his ticket at the last minute within a day
of his completing his 'A' levels. It was a day he will always
remember. He was very very happy that he went and loved every minute.

That is why I wanted a recording.

I am very disillusioned at this response and the slagging off.

As many have gathered, and many have not, I am not a very serious
person, and I cannot understand why people do take life seriously. I
know that this can lead to me offending, and I'm sorry if people
genuinely take offence by what I say.

Diana, I think perhaps you're being a little hard on the denizens of this
file. I hope that if someone had had the tape you wanted, they would have
offered it to you. If you didn't get it, perhaps no-one had it? Sometimes
Notes isn't as powerful as we would like.

As for slaggings-off, I didn't see you being slagged off directly. I agree
that you could feel insulted by implication, but you know what Notes is
like - any opportunity for a rathole is eagerly followed up.

Rod, no I don't feel Diana was hard; we had implied insults (Dire
Straits = Yuppie = Undesirable); as if _any_ person who works here has
the right to criticise others for earning a salary, enjoying the
"benefits" of western society; and we had uninformed, undifferentiated
criticism (I've listened to Brothers in Arms = boring = all DS is

Hi,
Is it necessary to justify our discussion, views are views and airing
them makes for interesting participation... I'm sure personal malice or
direction was never intended, nor these "discussion" replies intended as a
direct insult to Diana (or relations)...

The problem I think is, as someone has said, a Notesfile will usually
get positive-response-only due to people feeling that they should not enter
completely useless notes (which incidentally I don't think a healthy discussion
is). So, if there'd have been a dozen people with the tape, you'd have been
flooded with offers, no-one could offer it - *but* that doesn't mean there
were a dozen simple `No.' entries.

Strangely, it does take time to accustomise to Notes-environment. I had
just the same "what a clique!" attitude when a simple request (a whole new
topic too) had 0 replies, even after a week... however when I got to know the
people in that conf. I realised that they weren't being snobby, they just
didn't know...
