62.0. "Lynnyrd Skynnyrd are back ??" by YIPPEE::BUXTON (Steve Buxton - EAITG Valbonne) Mon May 09 1988 12:25

Note 61.0 has details of concerts in Mass., and includes a date
    for Lynnyrd Skynnyrd.

Now, I thought they all died in a plane crash in the early 70's.
So, is this the original band ? Have they recently re-formed ? More
important, are they touring Europe ?

Any info on this band would be greatly appreciated - Free Bird must
be (almost) EVERBODY's favourite track of all time !

The members killed in the plane crash were Ronnie Van Zandt (vocals)
    Steve Gaines(guitar) and Cassie Gaines(backing vocals).Allen Collins
one of the original guitarists was involved in a car smash which
has now left him paralysed from the waist down.
The band which is now playing is
Johnny van Zandt	vocals (ronnies brother)
    Gary Rossington	guitar
    Ed King guitar
Randall Hall	guitar (from gary's solo band)
    Leon Wilkinson	bass
    Artimus Pyle	drums
    Billy Powell	piano

the band have just put out a live album with various guests on it.Its
not bad but not as good as "one from the road".
According to "Kerrang" they are considering a british tour ,lets
    just hope it happens.

Yep there was. Not sure if they are still on the go though !!!
since a previous entry mentioned a Collins accident. I think
they recorded an album or two.

    RE: .1

Interesting to see Ed King in the line up - my memory is faded,
but I think he was an original who left after about the third album.

I think you are correct, ed king did leave after the 3rd album. He
recently gave an interview in "kerrang" ,in which he gave the
impression he did not remember too much about the early days (due
to the effects of some substances). His appearance since the old
days has changed dramatically,he no longer looks like meatloafs
brother,he has lost a lot of weight. However his playing is first
    class.
62.6T for Texas ...KERNEL::COHENKeep Music LiveFri Jun 03 1988 18:478

The band is currently touring the US and I think an album is in
the US top 50. Updates to this if/when I see 'em.

That appearance at Knebworth (Stones gig) - just great!!!!!

    David.

62.7I don't care for your fancy music if my feet can't shuffle around !AYOV14::DLAWFri Oct 09 1992 13:5624
Obviously this is a very popular notes file, ie four years
    since anyone made an update.

Contrary to popular belief, Lynyrd Skynyrd are STILL making
music, even after the aircrash of Oct 21st 1977, several car
    crashes and alot of pain.

The band released a new album at the tail end of last year
and called it, (in order to avoid confusion with previous line-
    ups) ......."LYNYRD SKYNYRD 1991".

They followed this up with a whistle stop tour of Europe which
included 3 dates in London. (2 at the Town and Country club and
1 at the Hammersmith Odeon on February 29th.

That must be some kind of record ie:- fifteen years between gigs
on British soil. Still, the Hammersmith was full of ageing long
haired people (some rapidly balding) most of whom seemed to
    remember most of the words.

Hopefully it won't be another fifteen years before we get the
    chance to see them again.
