49.1 | another re-release | WELSWS::PALMER | | Tue Apr 26 1988 13:24 | 7 |
| Hi Dougie,
As I remember it "A Girl I used to know" has been out as a single
once already but didn't do anything - God alone knows why.
As for Mary's Prayer - 3rd time lucky ...

| Steve, I wasn't aware that this was the THIRD time around for "Mary's
Prayer", which (as the NME says) makes it deserving of the 1988
Prefab Sprout "When Loves Break Down" Award For Persistence - for
once, I'll congratulate Mr. Branson's Virgin organisation!
However, I WAS aware that "A Girl I Used To Know" had preceded "M.P.",
and I can recall my disappointment when it 'bombed'...maybe next
time around it'll fare better.
Incidentally, "Davy" was also a single - the one before "A.G.I.U.T.K.",
and I have to say that this was a poor choice.
Steve, I think these earlier releases contained a fair smattering
of non-album material - you don't happen to know any of the titles?
(a cover version of Bowie's "Kooks" appears on the CD single release
of "M.P.").

Kooks - When I saw D.W. at Wembly (supporting Simply Red) they
did a version of Kooks and I thought it was brill! And I'm
a keen Bowie fan too!

| Hmm.....re. .3, and my prediction about "A Girl I Used To KNow",
I read with some disappointment at the week-end that a re-mixed
(what else?) version of "Davy" is to be the next single. I'd like
to think that it might be second time lucky, but in reality I don't
see this being a hit. Then again, maybe that's not their aim.....

49.6 | Better late than never | WELSWS::PALMER | | Tue May 31 1988 18:35 | 14 |
| I loved "Marys Prayer" and thought "AGIUTK" was even better. However,
DAVY is a lousy choice for the next single - I guess it may be big
third time around.
Having said that, I honestly don't believe that there is much "single"
material on the album. It's not bouncy singalong sausage machine
pop a la Kylie Minogue and in my opinion is far too good ever to
chart ( Can anyone imagine "Ruby's Silver Wedding" at number 1 ?)
I would like to hear more of Danny Wilson, but don't anticipate
them ever being a singles band unless they change their style
drastically - which I hope they don't.

49.7 | More like Steely Dan than Steely Dan themselves? | AYOV10::DROBB | Working for the yankee dollar | Fri Jun 03 1988 10:30 | 23 |
| Steve, the more I think about, the crazier it seems to release DAVY
again as opposed to AGIUTK (clearly a more commercial number - if
sales are what the group and the record company are after). I suppose
it may succeed in the wake of the immense popularity of MP, and
with airplay guaranteed on all the major stations, the probable
intention is to get more people to invest in the album.
Speaking of which, I agree with you that there's very little in
the way of potential hit singles (although the thought of RUBYS
GW at No. 1 is positively frightening - my least favourite track
on the album). If they'd been really adventurous, they could've
gone for "I Won't Be There When You Get Home" as the follow-up to
MP.....a superb track in every sense.
I think I asked this earlier, but does anyone have details of the
non-album tracks on the various earlier releases? Someone wrote
to the NME last week complaining that the same two tracks appear
on the flip sides of both the (original) AGIUTK and DAVY 12" singles,
which is a bit of a bummer, but it also states that the new (yeah,
re-mixed) version of DAVY will have ABERDEEN plus two brand new
tracks on the flip of the 12".

I find I'm reminded more of "Can't buy a Thrill" than PL.
'Only a fool would say that' and 'Turn that Heartbeat over again'
must have inspired more than a couple of tracks on 'Meet Danny Wilson'
Wouldn't you say?

| Re. .9 - Richard, what you say is quite true. Steely Dan have
obviously been a BIG influence on Danny Wilson over the years. Indeed,
the EP of which 'Davy' is the leading track, is entitled "Strepzil
Logic"!!! Subtle, huh?
Never mind all that, it's still one of the most refreshing (debut)
albums I've heard in ages. Fave track at the moment is "I Won't
Be Here When You Get Home" - love the horn arrangement!

| Not relishing being in a minority of one in this note, but going ahead anyway in
the interests of balance - I bought the album "Meet Danny Wilson", on the
strength of the very favourable reports contained herein. The prospect of some
"new" Steely Dan tracks was enticing. In the event I was extremely disappointed
with the album. I could hear vague recollections of Steely Dan, but this isn't
in the same class.
Sorry.
Keith
p.s. The album (vinyl) is now for sale if anybody wants to make me an offer.

| Anyone heard Danny Wilson's new single, THE SECOND SUMMER OF LOVE
yet? It's had a lot of airplay on wonderful Radio One, but as yet,
has failed to crack the charts.
Surprising, as it's *very* commercial, with a catchy 'hook', and
a zany video where all the action is in reverse (they even learned
the words to the song backwards in order to make it more authentic!).
The new album, BEBOP MOP TOP, promises to be a good bit punchier
than their debut, and should be out in the early part of July.

49.14 | a bit of deja vu? | BAHTAT::SALLITT | Dave - @RKG & ICI, 0642432193 | Mon Jun 26 1989 14:25 | 18 |
| It sounds like a song from the late 50s/early 60s.
It's good, but IMO, it won't sell enough to be a a biggie; it's
one of those that sound good on the radio, especially the car radio
with the roof open on a hot day....or on a beach tranny - you can
almost hear the waves and seagulls in the background.
It'll probably have loads of airplay but won't chart, which is a
shame.
Those who buy the singles that are top-chart material aren't old
enough to have had a *first* summer of love yet, never mind a second
one - at least not enough to identify with the song ;->
Ah yes, I remember it well......

| Well, I bought BEBOP MOP TOP last week-end, and after the first
three or four listens, I reckon it's a much smoother, if slightly
less exciting album than their debut. It certainly has an overall
more commercial feel to it, and I'd imagine that we'll see quite
a few singles being released off it. I can't recall track names
at the moment, but there are definately at least two sure-fire hits
to follow-up on THE SECOND SUMMER OF LOVE.
Mind you, it's reputed that they recorded around fifty songs for
the album (which lead to rumours of it being a double), so, who
knows, maybe they'll have some other goodies targetted for chartland.
Footnote for local noters : They're playing the 'Piv' sometime in
Sept. - tickets on sale through Trash in about a fortnight's time.

| I have to say that I'm disappointed at the (record co.?) choice
of the second single from BEBOP MOPTOP, NEVER GONNA BE THE SAME.
Although it's a fine song in its own right, there are *at least*
TWO other obvious hit singles on the album - I CAN'T WAIT and
I WAS WRONG (the former featuring Kit Clark on lead vocals, for
a change).
I can't understand why this band aren't more popular - after seeing
them at the Pavilion the other night, I'm convinced that they're
producing some of the finest music originating from Scotland in
recent years, and what's more, they are *superb* at re-producing
it in a live setting.
I seem to be the sole contributor to this topic - *please*, are
there NO other Danny Wilson fans out there in Notesland? ;-)

Hey, Dougie - you're not the only DW fan around here (as you well
know 8-)).
After Mon night's superb gig at Ayr, the new album is top of my
'to do' list for the weekend.
BTW, the only slight negative point about Mon night's show was a
guy behind me who was singing along with *every* song and making
a great job of drowning out Gary Clark's vocal - and he had a few
thousand watts behind him!
Any idea who this guy could have been Doug?

Bought BEBOP MOPTOP at the weekend and have been playing it non
stop since. You hit the nail on the head Dougie with you comparison
of both albums. BEBOP MOPTOP is a more commercial album, and not
so adventurous as MEET DM. You would normally expect that order
to be reversed.
However, the quality of the songs is (IMHO) of a higher order than
the first album. A very good buy.
BTW, the sleeve credits say "Lyrics printed with permission ...etc"
I didn't get a lyric sheet with mine. Did you get one Dougie?

Very sad to report (somewhat belatedly) that Danny Wilson have broken
up. That's ruined my year. The usual "musical differences" bit.
I will however be on the look-out for their singer/songwriter/guitarist
Gary Clark - who has far too much talent to fade into obscurity.

| Re. last (somewhat belatedly!) ...
I also was very sad to witness the demise of this (IMHO) truly excellent
little combo, after just two widely_critically_acclaimed but unfortunately
greatly_undersold albums - I personally prefer the first one over the
second, but there's not much in it (oh, and FWIW, I think both are now
available at 'mid-price').
Two pieces of good news tho' ... first of all, Gary Clark (lead singer
and chief songwriter) is reportedly demo-ing loads of new songs, with
an EP release touted for October or thereabouts. This EP will be the
forerunner to his first solo album, which will most likely see the
light of day in the early part of next year (not sure if he actually
has a 'deal' with anyone at the moment).
Secondly, a 'Best Of' Danny Wilson is to be released by Virgin next
month, and the superb news is that initial copies will come complete
with a (wait for it) 'limited edition' freebie album of 'b' sides,
cover versions and rare live stuff. Heaven knows what they'll cobble
together for the main album, but the freebie job sounds like it could
contain some quite enticing material (see earlier replies to this topic
for mention of non-LP tracks).
