Favourite 'live' concert videos that I've seen :
The Police "Synchronicity Concert"
RUSH "Grace Under Pressure Tour"
U2 "Under a blood red sky"
The Band "The Last Waltz"
I would definitely recommend any of the above, esp. The Police because
of the quality and originality of Godley & Creme who produced it...the
RUSH video is pretty hard to get but well worth it!!
Disappointments :
RUSH "Exit Stage Left"

I agree with the Dio disapontment, but which one????
I was quite surprised, having seen Dio twice I thought they
were brill, but the videos aren't anything special. Dio,
(as far as I remember) have released two videos (Sectrum
Special and the Sacred Heart tour). I've got 'em both, but
unless you are a real Ronnie fan, don't bother.
I've has just ordered "Whitesnake - Trioligy" and "Live...Whitesnake".
When I get 'em, (and stop my girlfriend drooling over Rudy Sarzo)
I'll let you know what I think (Completely unbiased opinion of course
;^)
Are there any Eric Clapton video's about? Any recomendations?

Has anybody out there seen the new Talking Heads Video compilation
`Storytelling Giant'. It's about 10 of their videos plus extra
bits? I've only seen the videos for `Road to nowhere' (who hasn't?)
,`Burning down the house' and `The lady dont mind' and these were
are real good. However please note that I haven't got this and
it isn't a review, I just wanted to know if anyone else has.

It's available at most vid-hire shops around

P.S. Compared with the quality of the record I thought
the vid to 'Exit Stage Left' was pritty good.

41.9 | why Trioloigy - there's five tracks????? | SUBURB::DALLISON | But would *you* buy one? | Thu Apr 21 1988 11:44 | 65 |
|
Title: Whitesnake...Trioligy
Cost: 6.99
Running time: 30 mins approx
Tracks: 6 (one is repeated though, so 5 different)
1>
Well, first off they showed clips of them filming videos with "Give
me all your Love tonight" playing in the background. Things like
DC and HTK kernoodling again, flowing long blonde hair, posing and
lots of directors running around, trying to look funny.
2>
Second, (And in my opinion one of the best tracks to come out of
1987 (the year, not the album) "Still of the night".
This had an abundance of pelvic thrusts on the part of Sarzo, and
Vandenberg does his Jimmy Page bit with a Violin bow. Poor old
Vivian Campbell is bobbing up and down like a yoyo, trying hard
to look like a poser, but failing miserably - however, as he is
the better guitarist of the two and does just about all the solo's
on the video, he is excused. D.C's mean/moody look is in fine form.
3>
Next on the bill is "Here I go again". This is an absouloutly terrible
version!!!!!!! bring back the HIGA of "Saints an' Sinners". Again,
lots of DC/HTK, and its at this point that there kernoodling becomes
nausiating. Boring really!
4>
Then there is "Is this Love". More kernoodling - Arrrghhhhhh!!!!!
Lots more posing and Sarzo's dyed his hair. Me and my girlfriend
are now convinced that Vandenberg was a donkey in a previous life.
5>
Then they did "Gimmie all your love tonight...Live" this was the
_only_ video without HTK, and to be honest, although I didn't like
the track that much, this video was the best of the lot. I _think_
it was filmed at Wembly Arena at one of the December dates (If you
look hard enough you'll see me :-). Again lots of pelvic thrust
fro all except poor old VC, who is slogging his guts out playing
the solo's, and Tommy Aldridge the drummer, who has very little
coverage anyway so even if he was posing, you wouldn't have seen him!!
I must say though that Vandengerg's thrusts had slowed down now
and then, when he had to be the occasional note/chord. One
particularly revolting bit involves old Sarzo licking his guitar.
Hmmmm. , maybe its coz HTK 'ain't around to do it for hime.
6>
They then showed more live footage and the credits with the best
track of the video "Love ain't no Stranger".
Marx out of ten?????????

BTW, Why it's so cheap to buy music videos in UK ?
I was really surprised at the price.
I bought a "We will rock you" (Live; 60 - 90 minues), but it only
cost 9.99 pounds.!
If you buy it in Japan, you have to pay about 52 pounds for it.

41.12 | Talking Heads, "Storytelling Giant" | XCUSME::MAKARAWICZ | Crosseyed and Painless | Fri Apr 22 1988 03:54 | 42 |
| Re. .4
I purchased "Storytelling Giant" about a week ago for $19.95,
and I must say that I got my money's worth. This video is a must
for any Talking Heads fan. It contains ten of their videos:
o Once In A Lifetime
o This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)
o Burning Down The House
o Crosseyed and Painless
o Stay Up Late
o The Lady Don't Mind
o Road To Nowhere
o Wild Wild Life
o Love for Sale
o And She Was
In-between the videos are bits and pieces of actual people (not
actors) telling stories about things that have happened in their
lives. It's strange, but these random pieces of conversation some-
how make a strong connection with the videos.
Each video is as innovative as the Head's music, with the exception
of "Crosseyed and Painless," which consists of breakdancers dancing
to the music; it's the only video of the ten that is not worth a second
look. The best videos include "Love for Sale," an interesting look
at how commercials can sell "love", "And She Was," an animated gem,
similar to Paul Simon's "Boy In The Bubble Video" (It was animated
and directed by the same person), "Road to Nowhere" and "Wild Wild
Life", which was from David Byrne's movie, True Stories.
"Storytelling Giant" would be a fine video if it had just included
the ten videos. However, the addition of the stories in-between
give each video (and song) much more meaning.

Title: Whitesnake - Donington Park
Cost: 9.99
Running time: 55 mins
This was recorded live at Castle Donington on 20 August 1983 and
is a complete opposite of the last one I reviewed - f******
brilliant!!!!
None of this pelvic thrust lark. David Coverdale, Micky Moody,
Cozy Powell, John Lord, Collin "Bomber" Hodgkinson and the other
(nameforgoten) guitarist explode through the real classic stuff
that gave Whitesnake the reputation it used to have.
Playlist (I think I've missed one out though):
1) Walking in the shadow of the blues
2) Rough and Ready
3) Ready and Willin'
4) Lovehunter
5) Mistreated
6) Soider of fortune
7) Ain't no Love (in the heart of the city)
8) Fool for your lovin'
9) We wish you well
Lovehunter features an exellent blues solo with his slide guitar,
but David Coverdales voice is a bit off now and then, but this has
gotta be real value fo money, and a must for any 'snake fan.

Dawn French is an English actress who as, in recent years, appeared
in many of the Channel 4 "Comic Strip" films. She has also appeared
on other UK TV programmes, and is married to the commedian Lenny
Henry. I guess that she may not be so well known outside the UK!
Hope this helps,
David.

41.19 | A good video is . . . | YIPPEE::BUXTON | Steve Buxton - EAITG Valbonne | Fri Apr 29 1988 10:54 | 16 |

I think a good "acid test" of a video is if you don't particularly
like a song BEFORE seeing the video, and love it AFTER. Some videos
certainly have that effect - every time you hear the record you
remember the video and enjoy it. Certainly Michael Jackson's "BAD"
did that for me - the long version (about 9 minutes I think) was
a whole cameo movie with the song at the end. This is also true
of just about every ZZ top video, surely a classic series.
My other faves include Meatloaf (Bat out of hell and Dead ringer),
Blondie's first couple of singles (how does she manage to turn me
into a heap of jelly just by moving an eyebrow ?), and how about
Soul Man too ?

| My faves, individual and compilation...
Yes, "Owner of a Lonely Heart" (long version) MTV chopped this sucker
up in the USA. Too bad, the 7 minute version is beautifully filmed and
fits entirely too well with the music.
Kate Bush, "The Single File". I plead guilty to all charges of bias,
being a total KT devotee. Admittedly, some of the early vids ("Wow",
"Wuthering Heights", etc) are kinda dated and cheesy, but that's half
th' FUN, see? Anyway, it IS worth it for the vids they didn't include
on "The Whole Story", such as "Suspended in Gaffa" and "Them Heavy
People"... and can we not forget that oh-so-yummy chain mail bikini in
"Babooshka"? But of course you UK folks have probably had a little
too much of Kate and this is being redundant...
XTC - don't know the title. I saw this video compilation in a video
store in Amherst, Massachusetts and rented it (it was on sale for
$120!!) It has most of everything off of "Waxworks" plus some others.
Really great stuff! Apparently it's a Japanese import, since the case
was covered with kanji...

| I've seen some good videos recently, which hasn't been the case for a
while. There are so many cliches in videos now, you get a bit sick of
them. There's the big empty room, could be a school gymn, with the band
inexplicably set up in the middle of the floor. There might be a model
girl drifting around this one. For bigger bands, there's the arrival,
set-up and performance at a stadium. There might be a few model girls
drifting around this one. There's plenty of other cliches too, but they're
too forgettable for me to remember right now.
The vid that first caught my attention was the new U2 one, 'Even better
than the real thing', it might be. Great camera work, with the camera
swooping right round underneath Bono in his full rock god black outfit. The
second vid was the current REM single, whatever it's called, with the 'Hey
Kids, rock'n'roll' line in it, featuring Michael Stipe is a stage-diver who
everyone is so eager to support that he drifts across the top of the crowd
endlessly. The frantic film is a strange contrast to the melancholy song.
It's a bit creepy too, reminds me of the tv coverage of the Ayatollah
Khomeini's funeral where his body fell out of the coffin and was tossed
about on the crowd. I don't even know who the third video is by but the
song could be called 'How the West was won'. It uses video trickery to mix
old cowboy film footage into the band's performance - great to watch.
A few years ago videos used to be exciting, like the Madness videos, and
maybe a few video makers are making an effort again.
Oh yes, one more: the quite violent video for the new Peter Gabriel
single.
