40.0. "The Woodentops (*not* kiddy's TV!)" by STOPIT::IBL (while you still can!) Mon Apr 18 1988 16:04

Does anybody know any history of, or background information to,
a band called The Woodentops? I was introduced to their music by
a friend (the piece in question was a single, "Love Affair With
Everyday Living", great stuff), and have rapidly become a fan.
I have two of their albums: "Giant", and the new one "Wooden Foot
Cops On The Highway". Is there any more material available?

Any bits'n'pieces about this group would be most welcome.

    							Ta muchly,
    								  Ian!

Excellent! A real good band getting some coverage in this notesfile.
The Woodentops have another album out `Live Hypnobeat Live' which
is some live concert stuff they did about a year ago, and `Well
Well Well' which is a compilation of early singles (some real good
stuff on this one). Go and see them live if you ever get the chance
as they play at twice the speed of their album stuff. Sadly, you've
just missed the Woodenfoot Cops promo tour which was really good
    at the Reading University stop.

Rolo McGinty is certainly a tremendous writer, and his vocals are
very distinctive. I bet they're a treat live, oh well, next time
eh? I imagine that the band's appreciative audience is increasing
rapidly, judging from the way that "Wooden Foot Cops..." went to No.1
in the Indie chart as soon as it was released, and that Rag of Rags
Melody Maker has now taken an extreme dislike to the band ("popularity"
is a dirty word, for sure....8^))

    RE> I bet they're a treat live.

yup , they are. Saw them at Stoke poly in '86 (I think).and they
were crackin', don't miss the chance to see them live.

Speaking of "Well Well Well", I assume most people know that the
producer listed as "Animal Jesus" is none other than the man, the dude,
the genius, Swindon's very own Andy Partridge...?

Well, if you didn't, now ya do..!

40.5This is a Great Band with Great MusicCOGMK::NELSONDavid W. NelsonWed Mar 29 1989 19:3410
I saw them in Boston, USA in the summer of '88 at a club called
the Paradise. I have never seen a band put out so much energy
so quickly before in my life. It was one of the better shows
I had seen that year. The only uncomfortable thing about the
show was near the end when they played especially LOUD and with
lots of reverb and other distortions (i.e., noise).

I like them a lot and I am looking forward to their next album.
Anybody know when that will be?
40.6Not quite Great for me...43868::NOCKI'LL have a BabychamFri Mar 31 1989 14:218
Not bad, but I'm not a great fan. Saw them in 84 or 85 at college
for 20p (see also NMA, Felt, etc - we used to get a lot of good
groups for 20p on a Sunday night!!!)

I seem to remember being a little disappointed, I was expecting
better after what I'd heard on radio of them. But not bad though.
