145.0. "Canon Elan II vs Rebel G" by MROA::BERGART (Jeff-the-ref) Wed Feb 05 1997 19:40

I'm looking to replace my stolen SLR Minalta Maxxum 7000. I've
narrowed it down to the following two choses:
(Prices quoted by B&H in N.Y.)
4.5-5.6 3.5-4.5
28-80 28-80USM 80-200 70-210USM Total
Elan II $400 190 220 $810
vs
Rebel G $260 140 145 $545
I chose USM for the Elan due to quicker focusing (I do sports shots). I
will be taking lots of telephoto shots on snow so the Elan is a bit
better with metering. Also the Elan can take full advantage of the USM
features and the Rebel can not.
However, is the $265 difference worth it? The big difference is that
the Rebel is much lighter, but has a plastic connecting ring for the
lenses. They say that the Rebel G has the Elan electrics and the Rebel
light weight body. The USM and regular lenses are about the same size
& weight.
Should I be concerned based on being out in very cold weather? Thanks
for your inputs. I need to make this decision soon!!
