4700.0. "What Server Software to Install?" by GROOVE::DADDIECO (That's Just The Way It Is .....) Thu May 29 1997 16:49

    Simple Question - hopefully:

    I got a Alpha Server 2000/OpenVMS 6.2 machine in the ZKO1 lab. I want
to use it for a HTTP Server. I currently have Web Pages set up on a
VAX/OpenVMS 6.2 server and would like to move the whole installation to
    my Alpha machine.

    If you'd like to visit .... http://groove.zko.dec.com/hp_ptq2.html

Question: What Server Software should I pull down from the IBG site
that will best get this job done - (or at least well underway).

    Thanx .... Dan

I use the Purveyor server - easy to set up and it has never given me a
problem.

There are only two available from the IBG Server: Purveyor and Netscape's
Communications Server. Choose whichever you want.

I was under the impression that the Ohio State University,
Multithreaded HTTP Server was actually included with FIS'ed OpenVMS
    based systems these days.

I have used this server on two different VAX systems, and the
performance was very good and the security tight.

I have used Purveyor on Windows NT V3.51 and the iccessant run-away
thread problems made me strike it dead.

The above is not reason enough to endorse one or the other, but as Ohio
State University is a OpenVMS place, and as they have been enhancing
their server continuously and as they have been at the game longer than
Purveyor on OpenVMS, I tend to siddle up to the Ohio State University
    system.

Some selling points are the servers integration with openVMS Help, and
the various optional software written by others such as the TAR
interface, you can dip into a TAR archive and pull out just one file if
you please. The cool interface for BookReader, now broken due to a new
On-Line Documentation format. The nice concept of every OpenVMS user
having their own WWW directory so that they can publish and manage
their own site content within the protection of their account and the
server gets pointers for them from the UAF. I could go on and on, but,
    hey, I like it.

No, the OSU server is not FIS'ed. It is on the Freeware CD.

Is this the latest and greatest kit? Got it off the IBG Server. After
I unzipped it I noticed that this product (or at least its saveset
files) is over 1 year old (3-APR-1996) and most of the files in the
savesets are over 1 1/2 years old (22-SEP-1995).

    Here's the kit filename: PURVEYOR011B_VMS.ZIP

I don't think it's changed since then. It works fine for me.

	I believe there's a 1.2 version for VMS.

    RE: -1
I've checked the IBG server and don't see a 1.2 kit for VMS - there is
one for WNT - could that be what you were thinking of?

No, I meant what I said. I didn't say that I had made the 1.2 VMS kit
available. It may be directly downloadable from Process Software's Web site
at URL: http://www.process.com/ . The internal license PAK should still work
  with this version.
