Does anyone have any ideas?

I have at various times had both Navigator Gold and IE installed on my
Alpha NT 4.0 workstation.  A few months ago, I attempted to upgrade IE and
the s**t hit the fan.  Things like when I selected a "Favorite Place" to go
to in IE, it fired up Navigator.  I assume this is because the default app
registered for an internet shortcut was wrong.

Anyway, I started a series of "remove this, install that" which culminated
in uninstalling IE and Navigator completely and reinstalling just IE.  And
then repeating the performance and installing just Navigator (regular).
In all cases the "Favorite Place" behavior is ok, but what has happened
since I removed and re-installed is that most web sites cause the Dr.
Watson dialog box to appear, but with the OK button grayed out.  The only
thing I can do with it is to hit X and cancel the box (and the app too, of
course).  The odd thing is that the symptom is very similar on both
Navigator and IE.

As nearly as I can tell, the death is related to some sort of active
content; I assume Java.

There must be a bogus DLL that both of these things are using.  I tried
deleting URL.DLL (which I had had sad experience with before) but to no
avail.  Does anyone have any other ideas?

I guess no one had any ideas.

I searched my system disk for "java" files and found a bunch of dlls in the
WINNT\Java directory.  I renamed all the dlls (javacomm,javaprxy,javart,msjava)
and then removed IE and Navigator and replaced them.  It made no difference to
IE.  However Navigator now works.  I can also get IE to work by disabling
Active Content.  Of course that means I don't get some stuff.

If you have installed NT4.0 SP3, then it could have been that - there's a hot fix
for Java on Microsoft's site.
