4652.0. "Internal AltaVista Directory" by NNTPD::"[email protected]" (Angela Fontes) Tue May 06 1997 18:18

Hi,

I'm searching for an internal Corporate AltaVista Directory. I know it exists
because someone here found it before but forgot the URL. It seems to be not
ready and I think that's why I can't find its URL easily.

Could someone point it to me? I want to show it as an example of use of
directory internaly.

Thanks,

Angela

Thanks for the sugestion, but I know the internal AltaVista Search and I had
already tried, without success, to find the Directory URL using it.

Nobody knows about the construction of an internal directory using AltaVista
Directory?

Its really hard to keep up with these things. Is "AltaVista Directory"
a technical term with some particular meaning? If so, what? If not,
then directory of what? People? Files?

People.

Have you tried http://www-elf.bb.dec.com/ ? I don't know what technology
this uses.

It was probably the one in REO that probably left the network when they
left the Digital network. It used to be altavista.reo.dec.com:1760, I believe.

http://altavista.reo.dec.com:1760/ is still there.

It is a running AltaVista Directory with the employess of AltaVista in it -
a sort of elf for AltaVista. The database may not always be fully up to
date.

AltaVista Directory is a product. It is an LDAP Directory, based on the
X.500 product. More detail from:

http://www-elf.bb.dec.com:8888/

  is the correct URL.

This is probably what you are looking for. There's also a WinELF
for PC's. This is an X.500 server that was built before AltaVista Directory
became available. The above URL uses a Web interface to get to the Employee
information, while WinELF uses the X.500 protocol directly. AltaVista
  Directory uses the LDAP protocol.

Thanks Nick. The URL http://altavista.reo.dec.com:1760/ was what I was looking
for.
