4621.0. "MS Internet Explorer and auto-proxy ?" by nova05.vbo.dec.com::BERGER () Fri Apr 18 1997 07:31

According to http://www.microsoft.com/ie/ieak/auto.htm
IE 3.02 (and 4.0 I believe) supports auto-proxy configuration like
Netscape, using a .pac file that contains a JavaScript function named
FindProxyForURL.

I've been using that for a long time with Netscape (to go through
the PA firewall or my local one in VBO depending on the destination
URL), but for the life of me I can't make it work with IE. Whatever I
do either it goes back to the proxies set "manually", or to no proxy
at all.

Has anybody had any success with this ?

4621.1You need IEAKOSTV03::MAKITANSTAAFLSun Apr 20 1997 06:437
According to the IE page, you need to make "something" with
IEAK (Internet Explorer Administration Kit) to use auto-proxy feature.
I think it isn't Javascript. ( .asp file? I don't know. )

4621.2Make sure you have the latest version of I.ENNTPD::"[email protected]"Jan-Erik PedersenMon Apr 21 1997 05:379
You must have >>I.E 3.02<<

then under the options menu do:

	1. Use the connections menu to to disable
	     "Connect through a proxy server"
	2. Then under the advanced menu, you can configure
	   automatic proxy config.

Unfortunately, there does not seem to be the ability to simply point at a local
file containing the auto=proxy script - it must be on a server somewhere.

4621.4Another one fighting thisROKKON::mko-ras-port-5.mko.dec.com::CohenThu Apr 24 1997 08:0616
I've been stuggling (unsuccessfully) with this as well. My basic environment is an Intel PC
with Windows95. I either RAS into Digital or connect to an ISP (hence the need to switch
from Proxy to No Proxy)

I've been trying to use my .pac files from Netscape. No matter what I do I can't get IE to
"load" them from my local drive on my PC.

The documentation on the Microsoft web site is not very useful, basically a bunch of URLs
that point to each other without explaining what you need to do.

There is a comment that only ftp, http (and some other protocols) are supported, i.e. not
"file"?, but I don't know how this helps.

If anyone has figured this out, I would appreciate hearing about it.
