4615.0. "Net Medic -- Network Analysis Tool for your Web Browser" by KELVIN::VILCANS () Wed Apr 16 1997 12:34

    Subj: Net Medic

    	This is must software for those people who want to find out why
    their web browsing is slow. The software runs with your web browser and
    details out bottlenecks and glitches of your web connections. With cure
    and complain features. It like having a scope on your network line.

4615.1I need net medic to find out why I can't download itIOSG::rj.reo.dec.com::Alffa::MerewoodRichard, 830-3352Thu Apr 17 1997 06:135
I tried downloading this to W95 using IE 3.02. The ftp transfer gets as far
as 727 KB and then hangs. It doesn't time out. Anyone else seen this
problem (or better yet know how to avoid it)?

    re: IE3.02

    	I ftp'ed with IE 3.0 with no problems. The tool has nice graphing
    features for site connection issues. Also, by clicking the mouse over
    the different hops, detailed dashboards for the performance along the
    connections pop up. You can even drag the dashboards into your browser.

4615.4Sounds like a useful tool, but...IOSG::newdial_p4.reo.dec.com::Alffa::MerewoodRichard, 830-3352, REO2/F-C2Thu Apr 17 1997 11:411
I'd rather not re-install Netscape if I can avoid it. Any other ideas?
4615.5use ftp directNETCAD::BARENYSJohn BarenysThu Apr 17 1997 14:5818
I was not able to download it w/ Netscape, but I did find
that I was able to FTP it from the server direct. I used
the FTP gateway from my UNIX box (as the command line FTP in
Windows does not seem to accept the port number)...

	ftp ftp-gw.crl.dec.com 1555

follow the directions on the screen about how to use
the gateway...

then I FTP'd it from there to my PC... voila...

Not the easiest route, but also not the worst that I can think
of.

Good luck,

    Any idea as to how this thing actually works? The White Paper is
    pretty vague on the actual workings of it.

    How much of the TCP/IP/Driver counters etc are accessible to standard
    windows program? Does the vitalsign program wedge itself between the
    TCP/IP stack and the ethernet/modem driver?

4615.7Here's how to FTP from DOSOTOOA::kap901.kao.dec.com::trimbleTue Apr 22 1997 10:3713
RE: .5

If you type FTP at the DOS prompt you will get into FTP.
Once there you can type:

FTP> Open <site> <port>

This will connect to the site through the specified port.

Jason

4615.8Digital had technology but no marketing abilityHELIX::SONTAKKEThu Apr 24 1997 17:0930
    RE: .6

    Jeff Mogul provided little insight. Looks like the technology belongs
    to "Digital had it then" category. It is now part of Polycenter
    products sold to Computer Associates. Under VTX PRICE it shows up with
    $3,122.00 as standard price.

    PathDoctor V1.0

    Solutions Overview
    Validate and diagnose IP routing and performance problems quickly
    and easily.

    Solutions Focus
    Rapid growth of TCP/IP routers, client/server computing, and extended
    local area networks can produce delays and traffic overhead problems
    that interfere with the internetworking vital to most businesses. Where
    before network paths were simple and short -- and easy to diagnose --
    today, they are complex and difficult to diagnose. PathDoctor software
    -- a straightforward, intelligent, and interactive network management
    tool -- makes it easier for you to provide reliable and efficient
    service.

    PathDoctor software delivers quicker and more widespread problem
    identification, better service, fewer dedicated network support cycles,
    and more efficient and cost-effective networks.

    POLYCENTER PathDoctor is so easy to operate, it encourages user
    organizations to diagnose path problems themselves, giving users more
    control over managing the quality of the network services.
