4599.0. "Ported mailbox from Solaris to DU" by TLAV02::CHENSAK () Tue Apr 08 1997 14:09

I ported the users from Solaris to Digital Unix, including the mailbox.
The user read mail using Pine and mailx , I also installed POP3 Server
on Digital Unix, but when I used POP3 client like Netscape or Eudora ,I
can't get the old mail that kept on the server (it doesn't load the old
mail on the server to my harddisk), however I can get new mail by using
POP3 client. How to solve this problem? Please clarify me.

    Thank you in advanced

POP3 doesn't support server-based folders. You need IMAP4 for that.

Sorry, what do you mean about server-based folders ? Or Solaris and
Digital Unix don't use the same user-home structure. I have to
explaind this to my customer and make them understand.
And why do I need IMAP4 ? Because there is scarcely the IMAP4
    client in the market .
    Thank you.

I assume you by "ported" mean moving all the users includings theire home
directories. By mailbox I suppose you mean the Berkeley style flat file
mailbox
format used by mailx (and also accessible by PINE).

A POP3 server only handles new mail e.g the mail delivered to it by the
sendmail
daemon (or similar) as local mail.

A POP3 client like a Netscape (3.0) or Eudora can only access the the new
mail in the POP3 inbox.

The "old mail" in the "mailbox" in the users home directories is only
accessible
when you using a mail client like mailx locally on the server.

Do you wan't to the load the old messages in the mailbox files into a folder
on the client. For Netscape you can do this by copying the

	~user/mbox file from the server

into the "nsmail" directory on the client.

When you start netscape again on the client you will see a folder
called mbox.

Simeon IMAP4 clients are available for just about every platform.
