4572.0. "Accessing Notes files from Internet" by ROMEDU::NEBBIA (Mario Nebbia @RIO - Rome, Italy) Wed Mar 26 1997 02:42

Can anybody please sumarize issues about accessing Notes Files via Internet?

-	Which gateway can be used to access Notes from inside Easynet?

-	Is it possible to access Notes from outside Easynet? If so, how can
it be done? Which notes files are supposed to accessible from there?

I found lots of pointers and references in this conferences and in other ones,
but up to now I was unable to find out a complete answer.

Regards

Mario

Notesfiles are internal to Digital. They are not accessable
	from the outside.

Many, if not all, notesfiles are available via the web (.1)
or via newsgroups that are only available to internal
	users.

4572.3As per .2, this interface only works WITHIN the EasynetSMURF::PBECKWho put the bop in the hale-de-bop-de-bop?Wed Mar 26 1997 11:2411
Actually, .1 points to a way to _search_ notes via the web.

http://www-esn.lkg.dec.com/decnotes/ is the URL for category-based
notes reading and writing via the web.

Be aware, though, that this interface is extremely limited; if
you're accustomed to used anything beyond the bare minimum in a
notes reader (e.g. "unseen" notes tracking, decent fonts, decent
keyboard shortcuts) you'll probably find it less than satisfactory.

There are people that use it, though. To each their own...
4572.4Internet doesn't always mean "web"SMURF::PBECKWho put the bop in the hale-de-bop-de-bop?Wed Mar 26 1997 11:289
By the way, in .0 when you say "via Internet" do you explicitly mean
"using a web-based GUI", or do you mean (more generally) "using
    TCP/IP instead of DECnet"?

The Notes clients running on VMS (character cell and X) and the ones
running on Windows (Netnotes at least) support access to notes via
TCP/IP, provided the node hosting the conference also is running
TCP/IP and you can dope out its DNS domain name.

How does one access a notesfile on the web, that is a membership
notesfile? Can this be done?

This isn't the right place for this discussion - GALVIA::VAXNOTES_BUGS
    is.

If the users are using TCP/IP (I think this is what you meant by
"Internet") and have fixed usernames and host names, you can add a
member using the non-obvious syntax node.fac.dec.com::username - but
this won't work if the node is a dynamically-changing numerical IP
address. I suggest you raise this issue to whomever has decided that
your VMS systems will go away.

You can't access a restricted conference via the Web.

I think the reply quoted in .10 is describing how to setup
a NetNotes user with access to a restricted conference. This
works as described. Since NetNotes runs on a PC running Windows
NT or Windows '95 with TCP/IP as transport, it's an alternative
Notes client if you've lost your VMS account (it does, however
require access to a Notes server, but you don't need an account
on the Notes server machine.) However, as .11 stated, you
aren't really accessing the restricted conference 'via the web.'

FYI.
I've been working for two years on a web based interface application
called WIS (standing for Web Information and Support). One of the
functionality is to allow Digital customers to access Notes files
(even members restricted) from their favorite browsers.
