Digital Enhances Internet Alphaserver Software For Digital UNIX

PR Newswire, Wednesday, March 05, 1997 at 09:48

Robust, fully integrated Packages Available for Beginners and Veteran Users

MAYNARD, Mass., March 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Equipment Corporation
(NYSE: DEC) today announced the release of two robust and fully integrated
Internet software packages for DIGITAL UNIX. The high-end offering, Internet
AlphaServer Software (IAS) V3.2, is packaged for experienced users who need
enhanced productivity. The second package, Internet AlphaServer Systems
Software (IASS) V3.2 accommodates the less demanding needs of the entry-level
user. This script-driven, fully integrated Internet software is easy to
install, administer and use.
"Continuing to respond to our customers requests for added Internet
solutions, we are pleased to offer improved Internet AlphaServer software for
DIGITAL UNIX," said Rose Ann Giordano, vice president of Digital's Internet
Business Group. "In addition to added functionality, users of our two new
DIGITAL UNIX software packages gain the superior speed and performance of
64-bit Alpha computing."

New features in this product release include:
-- Squid Proxy/Caching Server enhances performance by caching frequently
used information so that it can be accessed quickly; responds up to 4 times
faster than other commonly used proxy/caching products.
-- Internet Relay Chat (IRC) client and server support allows
users to communicate (chat) with others in real-time.
-- Domain Name Server (DNS) provides failover functionality that gives the
user the security of no downtime; if one system node fails, the system will
remain active by switching (failing over) to another node.
-- Updated Public Software to the most recent releases lets the
user stay up-to-date with security enhancements, increased performance and/or
functionality improvements made to the chosen software products in IAS and
IASS.

The high-end package, IAS for DIGITAL UNIX, ships as a stand-alone
package, with Internet AlphaServer ENERGIZED PLUS systems, and TruCluster
Available Servers. DIGITAL announced Internet ENERGIZED PLUS systems in
December 1996. These systems offer a suite of Internet products, including
IAS, POLYCENTER NetView, and PATROL Knowledge Module. As a result, DIGITAL
UNIX Internet AlphaServer systems are not only Internet-ready, but also
Internet-robust.

Internet AlphaServer Software for DIGITAL UNIX
IAS includes: Netscape Enterprise Server for HTTP
documentcreation/publication and secure electronic commerce transactions on
the Internet; Internet Administration Software for HTML-based user, printer,
and configuration management; carefully selected public software such as
Apache Web Server, Perl, Bind, Squid, sendmail, IMAP, POP-3, INN News Server,
Major Domo List Server, Washington University-FTP, Internet Relay Chat (IRC)
TCPwrapper; trial software for Enhanced CU-SeeMe and Reflector from White
Pine; the DIGITAL UNIX Operating System CD-ROM; and hardcopy documentation.

Internet AlphaServer Systems Software for DIGITAL UNIX
The entry level offering, IASS for DIGITAL UNIX, ships as a stand alone
package and with all DIGITAL UNIX AlphaServers. IASS includes all of the
components of IAS except Netscape Enterprise Server and the hardcopy
documentation.
"Users of both IAS and IASS gain the benefits of the unprecedented speed
and performance of 64-bit Alpha computing on DIGITAL UNIX systems. This is
especially important in the Internet Service Provider (ISP) marketplace," said
Digital's ISP marketing manager Mark Conway. "ISPs are some of our most
demanding customers. The enhancements announced today provide them with the
platforms and performance they need to offer reliable, value-added services.
These packages make any standalone AlphaServer an immediate and outstanding
mail, web, news or DNS server -- right out of the box."

    Pricing and Availability
Both packages will be available from DIGITAL and its resellers on March
14, 1997. Internet AlphaServer Software V3.2 for DIGITAL UNIX is priced at
$1295 worldwide. Internet AlphaServer Systems Software V3.2 for DIGITAL UNIX
