Conference gyro::internet_toolss

You're not the only one waiting for a DU version.  Others are too.
Anyone out there know what's going on?  Will we have to wait for 
Beta 3?

Not quite willing to wait, I grabbed the Linux version yesterday and
loaded that.  Isn't it nice :-)  It dumps core quite regularly (hey 
it's Beta) but I'm very impressed with the new layout and new features.
The Java engine on v40b2 for Linux seems much improved too, I've not
had any of the crash problems (so far) I used to get with v301.

What a shame this company isn't standardising on multi-platform
Netscape products instead of locking us into Microsoft.

        That would require us to strive to be a real leader in the
        marketplace (Netscape not being large enough by itself to
        maintain a leadership position), whereas with Microsoft we
        can just be a safe follower.

No one ever made a big success of it in businesss by riding on
the crest of someone elses wake!   If that's the extent of our
strategy, then the best we can hope for is to be mediocre! Don't
be fooled into thinking that it's safe either. There are a lot
of other companies riding the Microsoft wagon too, and competition
for that piece of the pie is very stiff.  Perhaps it's even more
lucrative to be chomping on a different slice.  Look how well
SUN are doing right now for example, and they have nothing to
do with Microsoft.

Besides, I was actually refering to our internal IT strategy,
not our business dealings outside.

What would you call Compaq, Dell, Gateway, etc.? They didn't 
invent any new market, just expanded an existing one by selecting 
a diferentitator: luggables in Compaq's case, mail order, for Dell 
& Gateway.

We are also looking at expanding an emerging market (NT) by 
bringing it into the enterprise with Alphas, clusters, 64 bit, 
target markets and premier services.

But a key point is that the above companies more than anything, 
besides a good strategy which I think we also have, they had a 
good execution. That's all we need, but Digital has always had a 
hard time executing on good strategies.

I was trying to figure out what bugged me about Palmer's DVN comments re:VMS
and prior to that the comments in the mass junk email with a subject like
results of customer satisfaction survey, when I figured it out.

In both cases, they lead off with a response to a question about where does
VMS fit in (and how our VMS customers are pissed) and the answer is
	while vms isn't in our 1-3-9 thingy, vms is important to us
	BUT the vms market isn't growing very fast so we're focusing elsewhere
and Palmer adds
	BUT vms puts the bread and butter on the table so we need to keep on
	selling it

Well, if the vms market isn't growing much, ie., the market that is sort of
the mainframe and department server market, why is it that IBM is working so
hard to sell AS/400s and 3090s, and HP and Sun are creating mainframe class
hardware platforms that are targeted above TurboLaser?

Well, the answer is that you can only expect to grow by about 10% per year
which is less than the 20-50% or more that some selected low margin areas have
been growing, but if you keep up 10% for 7 years, you are double in size.

So, the way that I look at it, if we had kept pushing VMS to eek out a meer
10% growth in revenue for product, services, and consulting, for the past
5 years, then we would be two years away from being a $30+ billion dollar
company.

Instead, we've tried strategies where we go from nothing to huge with five
years of 100%+ growth per year.  For the expected reasons, we can't handle
that rate of growth because all the areas that we start off well are very
complicated and require good technical people familar with the technology.
We release Truclusters and a year later customers want to put 8 Tlasers
in a cluster.  It took us a year to get 8 750s working inhouse and it was
probably 3 years before a customer cautiously tried to do an 8 node VMScluster.

The current strategy means that we'll be a $30 billion company in two
years if we can deliver 16 Tlaser Truclusters in 98 and 32 Tlaser Truclusters
in 99.

Or alternatively, we can sell 500K NT worksystem in 98 and 5 million in 99.

If we do both, then we'll be a $50 billion company.

If we do neither, then we might be a $10 billion company.

	I think these comments really belong in either the Marketing notes
  conference or the DIGITAL Notes Conference.

Well, yesterday I wrote a nice 20 minute long reply, briefly touching
on the evolving subject, but refocusing on my main comment about 
Digitals choice of Internet Tools and Standards (or lack of) for its 
(or more specificly MCS's) internal IT structure.  

But when I saved it, the notes conference had gone down and I lost
the lot :-(   

I didn't have the heart to type it all in again.

REPLY/LAST in the character cell Notes interface will bring it back, if you
don't leave Notes.  Even if you can't get back into the conference, you can use
REPLY/LAST (or WRITE/LAST, they'll both bring back your last buffer) in some
other conference and use the WRITE command inside the editor to save it to a
file for posting to the correct conference some other time.  (Then you can
QUIT, so as to avoid posting a totally irrelevant reply in the second
conference.)

(I have no idea if these commands are available in some other incarnation of
the Notes client.)

The decnotes client for UNIX leaves its composed entries in /usr/tmp
with a name like notesAAAa06094. I have had the problem in .8 several
times, and in each case successfully retrieved it from /usr/tmp.

I use the Web interface to notes, so my reply was in a TEXTAREA input
field.  Dunno if that gets cached anywhere after FORM submission.

    Probably just a click on the Back button will let you see your note
    which you can then copy & paste somewhere else...  Note that I haven't
    tried this or anything (isn't this the Hackers conference?  No?  I'll
    go away now...)

	In the PC Notes Client, you can use the Note->Create Reply/Topic->
  Use Last Text from the menu to get the lost text into the editing window.
