4499.0. "PMDF availability and recommendations for internal use" by STEVMS::PETTENGILL (mulp) Mon Feb 24 1997 23:18

Is anyone able and willing to comment on PMDF for internal use on VMS?

Any idea what it would cost to get PMDF for an internal cluster? The
critical capability needed is IMAP4 so that we can manage mail on a VMS cluster.

Does anyone recommend PMDF for this?

And before someone suggests that this is a bad idea, my estimate of the
cost for my group to go to Exchange to be in excess of $100K, but even if we
could get the dollars approved (I think we could) we wouldn't be able to
hire the 1/2 person required to spend the labor part of the $100K.
Everyone in the group works remotely at least part of the time, but because
of the kind of work we do, everyone has to have terminal emulation capability.
While we are providing everyone with a PC in the office area, this doesn't
cover all the locations where people need to have mail access. Switch from
VMS to unix provides no immediate benefit to the users and lots pain to the
system manager, and I think that we need to buy something equivalent to PMDF
for unix and I'm not sure that what's required even exists.

PMDF is already Digital's main gateway among Exchange, SMTP, Teamlinks,
and MR, if I'm not mistaken. You might try talking to MaryEllen Kennedy
([email protected]), if she's not already reading this.

If you use UNIX, you don't need PMDF - just use SMTP along with a POP
or IMAP4 server (maybe that's what you mean by PMDF?). You only need
one small UNIX host for that - a spare 486 running Linux, for example.
POP servers and clients are plentiful. IMAP4 servers are available,
too. It's the clients that are largely missing. However, several (like
Netscape, as I recall) are coming along "soon". For that matter, you
can use a POP server on VMS, though IMAP4 would be a better solution in
    the long term.

I'd personally choose either one of those solutions ahead of Exchange
(and have) even if I did have the money.

Look also at note 1778.39 in this conference, we are plaaning to
install/configure that IMAP4 server on a VAX cluster. Before I wanted
to setup a test system with it, it went rather smoothly the only
problem is that Netscape Communicator (which includes an IMAP4 client)
has problems to communicate with the IMAP4 server, telneting to port
143 works fine but some commands seems to be rejected, I sent a mail
to someone from the Kings College in London about it.

There is a PMDF notes file somewhere... (I *think* THEBAY::PMDF, but I
could be wrong)

Just fyi.

Esys Corporation's Simeon is an IMAP4 client and runs on a large number
of Platforms. I don't think that VMS is on it but you could check with their
  Web site:

http://www.simeon,com/

There are a number of other IMAP4 Clients available, but this one seems to
be the most available and on the widest number of platforms. I've also been
  trying Siren Mail:

4499.5PMDF good choice for OpenVMS IMAPPARZVL::16.124.40.237::kennedynuncam non paratusThu Feb 27 1997 14:0420
I'd highly recommend Innosoft as a vendor - they have
a very good product and are responsive to problems/questions,
etc. So if you want a supported, industrial strength IMAP4
service on OpenVMS, they're the one to choose. I presume you
want IMAP because you want people to be able to leave files
on the server (and PMDF because it will use the VMSmail file
cabinet, so people won't lose old mail).

Since we've concentrated on PMDF as a mail gateway, I don't have
much familiarity with the IMAP4 implementation.

I don't pay the bills, but send me mail ([email protected])
if you're interested in how much it would cost for a license
and I'll get it to the right people.

And yes, THEBAY::PMDF is the internal conference for PMDF.
Also, Innosoft have a website at
