4498.0. "FaceMe! Plugin from CRL" by OZROCK::FARAGO (What about the Infobahn have nots?) Mon Feb 24 1997 09:27

The following is an unpaid internal announcement, to inform
you about the latest Internet related technology from CRL...

The DIGITAL FaceMe! Plugin is a synthetic 3D face which accurately
synchronises lip movements and expression to speech audio. Running in a
Netscape browser it can speak to you in a number of ways:

o you can choose a webpage by typing in a URL and FaceMe!
will introduce the webpage to you using synthetic speech
      (DECtalk text-to-speech technology).

o you can type in some text and FaceMe! will speak the text using
      synthetic speech.

o you can select some phrases of real speech which have been
specially annotated with lip movement information, and hear and
      see them spoken.

In the near future it will be possible to automatically annotate real
speech with lip movements, for realtime or delayed playback over the
Internet. It will also be possible to put (map) photos of real faces
    onto the synthetic face.

The current Digital Internal Use Only beta still has some bugs, but if
you would like to help us by testing the FaceMe! Plugin, please
download a copy from the website below:

    	http://www.crl.dec.com/Face

For more details about FaceMe! research and exciting potential
applications, check out the Facial Animation Project at:

    	http://www.crl.dec.com/projects/vision/decface.html

Thanks for your interest, on behalf of the entire FaceMe! team.

    regards,

4498.1Does it work with the Gold version?LESREG::JACKSONMon Feb 24 1997 12:095
Downloaded it this morning. Tried to install it, but got an error that
said that Netscape wasn't installed on my system. It is there but was
not the default browser, so I set it up as the default. Same error.

I have Netscape Gold Version 3.01. Is the "Gold" getting in the way?
4498.2YIELD::HARRISMon Feb 24 1997 13:005
I have Netscape (gold 3.01) as my default browser and get the same
"Netscape is not installed! Netscape 3.0 or higher must be installed."
    error.

4498.3Tried Netscape Communicator, and got different problemmrsam.ogo.dec.com::HutchinsonMon Feb 24 1997 15:218
I installed Netscape Communicator 4.0b something. DECface installed ok, but then when I went to
run the demo, I got an error message of application/x unknown-content type

my pointer was at

file:///C|/Program Files/DIGITAL/FaceMePlugin/ttsdemo.html

I sent a message to [email protected] but have not heard back.
4498.4Works fine on HiNote UltraFREEBE::YATKOLA_Dave .......Mon Feb 24 1997 16:167

I installed it on my HiNote Ultra with Windoze 95 and all is well. The
demo runs fine. Cool stuff. Now when will notes use this plug in ? :-)

    Thanks CRL ...

Pity those of us with Alphas can't try it.

Hi. Thanks for all the interest so far!

First a clarification. The FaceMe! Plugin and any other technologies
mentioned in the basenote, and the basenote itself are DIGITAL INTERNAL
USE ONLY. This is to protect digital's intellectual property rights.
I am sure you will agree that things should only be shown to the outside
world once the proper protection is in place. If you have any questions
about this, please contact Mike Essig ([email protected]).

Right, on with the questions. Unfortunately there was a bug in the
installation on systems which only have Navigator Gold v3 installed,
versus systems which had other combinations of Navigator v3, Gold v3
etc. A new fixed kit (FACE051.EXE) is available from

    	http://www.crl.dec.com/Face

Netscape Communicator 4beta is not supported at this stage, although we
have tried 4beta1 with some limited success. We will be doing more
    testing with 4beta2 shortly.

Regarding Alpha (presumably Windows NT), there are no plans at this
stage for a plugin for that platform, nor Mac, UNIX or VMS. Again
please speak to Mike if you have large volume opportunites.

Please send any questions/comments/problems to [email protected] so that
they can be tracked and each one answered. I probably won't get time to
read in here every day. Thanks!

    regards,
    Robert Farago

I was dissappointed that it only read the page title. I was expecting
it to read the entire page. Did I do somethign wrong?

BTW, what is the purpose of the software? That is, I've heard of
projects that attempted to simulate mouth movements to help in training
deaf people to read lips, but those efforts haven't met with much
success. At this phase of development, I'd say this software wouldn't
be able to fill that niche either, and so far it certainly isn't better
    than reading plain text.

So is this more of a technology demonstration kind of thing? I
apologize in advance for my lack of vision.

FX!32 ran it just fine. (Under the x86 version of Netscape.)

You need to fix this mail address. Either he's part of AltaVista
Software and they have new addresses or he's no longer in LJO.

If this is going to be a Digital Product, you should revisit this
decision since Alpha NT is important to the Corporation and we are even
getting Netscape to put their products on Alpha NT. A faster processor
  should help in any case.

! I was dissappointed that it only read the page title. I was

Nope. That's all it does today, although we plan to make it a little
more sophisticated before external release. Seeing as it will be a
"free" plugin, we have to figure out how to make money from the
technology too, so there's a fine balance to be navigated between being a
cool technology demo to something that solves someones real business
    problem.

Some of the potential applications are mentioned at:

Yes I guess that description is very apt. Hopefuly lots of potential
customers will get great ideas as to what it's useful for and we'll
sell lots of SDK type things.

It still seems to work :-) I'll ask though...

I agree that it's desirable to push digital hardware, but the volume
opportunites are on Intel (just thinking like a software company would)

It may be fairly trivial to qualify on Alpha/NT and if this is the case
it's likely we'll do it, however the performance design center has to be
Intel if we want to be serious about volume software technology. If we
have to stall new features because of limited qualification resources to
do Alpha/NT, difficult (for digital the hardware company) tradeoffs will
have to be made. So if you have a 1000 seat Alpha/NT opportunity which
will need synthetic face tehcnology, let Mike know!

    regards,
    Robert
