4493.0. "Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.01 for NT Alpha available" by teco.mro.dec.com::tecotoo.mro.dec.com::mayer (Danny Mayer) Fri Feb 21 1997 15:35

Internet Explorer 3.01 for Windows NT/Alpha is now available in
the Released Kits area of the Software Distribution Server at URL:

http://ibgzko.zko.dec.com/sdk/

It was actually made available on November 22, 1996, except that
noone told me about it. The Java VM addon that is available for IE 3.01
for both Intel and Alpha can then be downloaded from Microsoft's Site.
I found out that you can't download them without running IE 3.01 to do
  the download. Nice! ;-(

4493.1Really 3.01?SKYLAB::FISHERGravity: Not just a good idea. It's the law!Mon Feb 24 1997 12:4510
Is 3.01 mis-labeled? Both this kit and the one I got from Microsoft say they
are going to install IE V3.0 (build 1216) not IE V3.01. I installed the
Microsoft one a few weeks ago, and Help About also says 3.0. And finally the
IBG server says I have IE V3.0 and suggests I not use it to download.

So who is right?

Thanks,

Burns

V3.0 build 1216 is 3.0.1 (actually, 1215 is 3.0.1 - this is "one better"!)
The IBG server doesn't like MSIE (or vice-versa.)

The IBG Server is half right. It only checks part of the USER_AGENT
string, so it sees the MSIE 3.0 part and ignores anything after the 0 including
1's. Should I fix it? It's not worth the effort.

> The IBG server doesn't like MSIE (or vice-versa.)

It's not quite mutual. MSIE 3.0 has a bug in it, which causes it to
fail to download software kits from the IBG Software Distribution Server.
I've attempted to get Microsoft to fix the problem and even put up an
external copy of the server for test purposes. I haven't heard from them in
a while. I assume that they are concentrating on version 4.0. They do
however need to get it fixed.

So then MSIE 3.01 truly identifies itself as 3.0, not 3.01 in Help/About?
That's not very good behavior.

Right. The number in brackets after that identify the build number.
