4485.0. "HTML catalog extensions?" by AOSF1::kras (Cyber-Shredder) Tue Feb 18 1997 14:33

Is anyone aware of any planned or proposed cataloging extentions to HTML?

That is, some sort of tag mechanism that author's could use to catalog
documents, sort of like a Dewy-decimal system.

e.g.

	<CATALOG=76.58> or <CATALOG=comp.parallel>

	would put the document in the catagory of computer science.
	(Serializing individual documents wouldn't be practical, but
	 that's not the problem - locating the correct set of information
	 is.)

Seems like this would be a good addition, allowing spiders to better
catagorize information for search engines such as AltaVista. Catalog
services would also have facilities for automated cataloging spiders (just
not practical today.) Essentially this would bridge search and catalog
engines. Obviously it wouldn't be practical that every document gets
cataloged - there are just to many - but it would be a useful tool none-the-less.)

Anyone aware of any such efforts?
