4465.0. "IIS and remote_host" by DECIDE::LANGFELDT () Mon Feb 10 1997 16:11

    Question about IIS

From a cgi script the REMOTE_HOST variable returns the ip address
when we want to get the host name. I understand that to mean that
the reverse domain name mapping isn't working.

Any advice how to work with / around this?

    Thanks

Do you mean you never get a name? Are many
different clients connecting to the server?
Or just some name aren't being translated?

If it's all, then you probably need to
configure DNS on your server, especially if
these are hosts from different places.

If it's just some, you'd have to track down
the owner of the system (or the network support if this
is internal) and get them to fix their network
registration (all hosts should be registered with a
reverse pointer so the address points back to the name,
but sometimes it's omitted).

right -- it just returns the ip address. Documentation says that
this will happen if the reverse domain name mapping isn't set up.

If this is external to Digital, just contact the network admin of
that DNS, if it's internal to Digital, do the same and deny them access if
you REALLY want to ensure that they are internal.
