4462.0. "Using DNS without connection to the internet ?" by NETRIX::"[email protected]" (Torsten Kerschat) Mon Feb 10 1997 03:31

Hi,

can I use DNS without having a connection to the internet ?
(I won't have any root-Domain servers). I think it
should work, but I am not sure ? Any experience ?
Thanks

Yes. Using a name server for your local names will give you
a central place to associate local names with local addresses.

Yes, you can and it works. There is nothing special about root
servers, except that they're configured to give authoritative answers
for the root domain (whose name is .).

However, if you configure your server to be a root server, you will be
in for a period of difficulty if you ever actually do connect to the
real internet. This is especially true if there are hosts on your
network (be they servers or clients) that cache DNS responses.
