4461.0. "Access an external ISP mail account?" by NETRIX::"[email protected]" (Dale Nelson) Sun Feb 09 1997 05:27

I have my Netscape Navigator set up for external web access using proxies for
FTP, Gopher, and HTTP and it works great. (I'm dialing in from home)

But, is there a way to access my mail account on my external ISP account? I'm
able to access my ISP's home page OK, but if I try to access my mail Netscape
times out with:

"There was no response. The server could be down or is not
responding"

(Netscape was able to look up the host, and displayed the "contacting host"
 message before timing out.)

Of course, I can get my Internet mail by dialing into my ISP directly, but it
would be convenient to be able to access it when I'm connected to Digital.

Thanks,
Dale

I've thought of writing a pop-gw (similar in concept to the ftp-gw).

Alas, too little free time.
4461.2Tunnel from ISP thru GatewayGLRMAI::tunsrv2-tunnel.imc.das.dec.com::NEILSun Feb 09 1997 14:0415
re: .0

Well, it adds another layer, costs more and is slightly slower but I do
what you want every day. But, I use Alta Vista Tunneling to get thru
the tunnel gateway. The tunneling software seems to trap any request for
a 16.* address and route it thru the gateway, everything else just goes
out onto the Internet (I even have an Exchange profile set up that allows
me to see both my ISP mail and Exchange mail at the same time...).

The Alta Vista software cost is nominal and there is a monthly cost center
charge for the Tunnel key.

Peter.

    I think you misunderstand what .0 wants. He wants to be able to
    connect to his ISP's POP3 server from inside Digital. The Firewall
    doesn't allow that.

    A roundabout way but you could set up a Hotmail account for yourself.
    Mail will be accessible through the browser. Of course, it will be
    different from your POP account.

	If you can FTP to where the mail resides on the ISP then you can read
  the mail by FTP'ing it to a local system. Note that the mail will remain
  on the server.

Thanks for the info and ideas...

re: .3:
Sounds like this the bottom line, eh? Just can't get there from here.

re: .4
I have a Hotmail account, but it's not my primary email.

re: .5
I'll have to investigate this...

Thanks again,
Dale

>I have a Hotmail account, but it's not my primary email.

	It doesn't have to be, you can set Hotmail up to grab your email
	from your ISP. Just set up the info in Hotmail's "Control Panel"
	and then click the "Check POP Mail" button on the Hotmail toolbar.

Larry,

Thanks for the tip... Works just fine. I hadn't really taken the time
to fully check out HotMail...

4461.9Dialing in from home....GLRMAI::grock.ogo.dec.com::PNEILTue Feb 18 1997 14:4511
RE: .3

No, I understood exactly what he wanted. He said he was dialing in from
home so I gave him an alternative. More expensive and maybe slightly slower
as I said, but one that works perfectly for me every day.

Rather than dial directly into a RAS number dial into your ISP and Tunnel
in from there. As I said, from that point you can simultaneously
connect/view sites and mail both inside and outside the firewall.

4461.10Good alternative...NETRIX::"Dale.Nelson@abs_29.rto.dec.com"Dale NelsonWed Feb 19 1997 04:588
re: .9

Yeah, good idea, but for me the DEC dial-in is lots cheaper... So tunneling
will be my backup scheme.. Thanks to all for your input.

4461.11Not very expensive at all.GLRMAI::tunsrv2-tunnel.imc.das.dec.com::NEILWed Feb 19 1997 13:3019
re: .10

Not to beat a dead horse or anything, but I'll make one more response and
then drop it :-)

If you're already paying for an ISP (hopefully with a flat monthly charge
for unlimited usage...) then the additional costs are low and would
probably be paid for by Digital.

The Alta Vista tunnel software can be had for, I believe, less than $10 and
then you would have to convince your CC Mgr to pick up the monthly tunnel
costs (still minimal but I'm not exactly sure how much - maybe $20).

Ok, non-paid infomercial over and you can return to your regularly
scheduled programming... :-)

Peter.
4461.12Yeah, But....NETRIX::"Dale.Nelson@abs_20.rto.dec.com"Dale NelsonSun Feb 23 1997 23:469
My personal ISP costs about $20 a month (DM 30), but the 'local' phone call
here in Germany costs about 10.5 Pfennigs a minute.. The '0180' number into
DEC
costs about 10.5 Pfennigs per call - no time unit charges. The boss would
probably pick up the tunneling charges, but the call is on my nickel..
