4418.0. "Updated URL for OpenVMS Netscape Release Notes?" by IOSG::PYE (Graham - ALL-IN-1 Sorcerer's Apprentice) Mon Jan 27 1997 04:47

    This is probably not the right conference, for which I apologise in
    advance!

    A customer in thge US DECUS (external) notes file is complaining that
    the URL for the Release Notes in the Internet Product Suite doesn't
    work:

    	http://www.openvms.digital.com:88/netscape/help/docs/rn_ovms20.html

    And he's right! At first he thought that the port:88 was the problem,
    but it appears that the URL is just no longer valid. Can anyone help me
    with the updated location?

    Also, as a background question, it would be nice to know why port 88 is
    used, since that seemed to cause concern to other users whose firewalls
    didn't like it.

    Thanks,

    Graham

4418.1.html -> .htmSTAR::WALDMon Jan 27 1997 09:1615
    It doesn't work because that's the wrong URL. The correct URL is:

    http://www.openvms.digital.com:88/netscape/help/docs/rn_ovms20.htm

    Note that the file extension is .htm, not .html. The documentation
    on both the IPS V1.0 and V1.1 CDs point to the correct URL, so I
    suspect that operator error is involved.

    On another note, any organization that limits web access based on
    connecting to port 80 is going to find their web-browsing abilities
    severely limited. This probably means that they are trying to use
    filtered routing to provide web access, which is the wrong way to go.
    A web proxy server would be a much better solution.

    Hans.
4418.2Why Port 88 anyway?IOSG::PYEGraham - ALL-IN-1 Sorcerer's ApprenticeTue Jan 28 1997 04:377
    Thanks, I'll pass that on.

    But in the general case, why *do* we use different port numbers? Is it
    to spread the load across more than one server?

    If I could give the customer a good reason, I think it would help calm
    him down :-)

We use a different server.

    Go to www.openvms.digital.com. From there you can find the released
    version (V2.02) and the current beta of 3.0 Gold.
