4347.4Accessing remote drivers from FastrackPCBUOA::BAYJJim, PortablesTue Jan 28 1997 10:5828
    Using Netscape Gold, I added a link to a document that pointed to a
    network drive. I got the message:

    	file: ///H|/Frivers/MISC/Contacts.txt
    	is on a different device than the current document.
    	Link will not work if document is accessed remotely.
    	Do you want to use this link anyway?

    I said yes, and tested it using Fastrack, and sure enough, it would
    work locally on the server, but not from a different system.

    What is the technical impediment to this, and are there any
    workarounds?

    I had hoped to use the centralized web server to serve up access to
    files stored on several remote servers. Unless there is a workaround,
    the direct route won't work.

    What about writing CGI scripts that simply do a DOS "copy" of the
    contents of the remote files into the http output stream? Will I have
    the same problem?

    If that doesn't work, what about copying the file in realtime to the
    local disk before serving it, to ensure a fresh copy? Will the same
    problem prevent this technique from working as well?
