657.0. "LAN NetBIOS implications ?" by BBO010::TILBY () Tue Feb 25 1997 20:07

    Folks,

I have a customer with a V1.0a NT cluster on a couple of 4100's running
3.51. The customer has a LAN/WAN migrating from routers to switching
now (I'm not a networking kinda guy, so that about as far as I go).

Having purchased and installed the cluster they now find the client
"sees" the cluster alias via netBIOS broacasts and their network admins
are exactly excited about this. They currently filter netBIOS and any
other broadcasts from the LAN/WAN. Before they resort to opening up the
filters, they'd like to know a little more technical info on the
cluster broadcast system. Such as what volume of traffic it is likely
to produce, is it possible to identify these packets to allow only
these through (rather than all broadcast traffic) etc etc etc. Anything
    technical really.

Microsoft and Digital are working this project together and Microsoft
are currently investigating using this customer as a Wolfpack "early
adopter" site in order to avoid the use of netBIOS. I'd prefer not to
    use a beta product.

Our product is working as advertised, but I guess they just didn't (or
the BP didn't) read the fine print or understand the client side.
Technically we can walk away from this problem BUT morally (with more
sales riding on this pilot) I'd like to give this (possibly
conservative or paranoid) customer some more information to allow a
more informed decision to be made.

    Many thanks

In version 1.1 we provide IP failover for socket applications, which provides
for WAN access to cluster services without client software. This solution does
not support file shares at this time. But it works great for Web server, SQL
client access and Oracle client access. You still need the client software for
file shares.

We have IP failover for fileshares working in the lab; we expect to
provide this as a service pack sometime in Q4.

Available yet ??? Seems like we were told at the NT Wizards symposium that
it was going to be "released any day".... and that was over a month ago.
