629.0. "Remote Cluster Administration Discussion" by ZPOVC::SOONHENG () Mon Feb 17 1997 19:13

How could we do remote administration of Windows NT Cluster ? This is
a question I am expecting lots of customer to ask ?

In an enterprise NT network where there exist domains and NT cluster
integrated and distributed over different location. It is very
difficult to request the Administrator for Cluster to fly to the
location of the NT Cluster to do manual failover for upgrade of
software on one of the nodes. If we have remote administration
features available in NT cluster, this is no more a problem.

Does anyone has any comments or answers to the above question ?

There are some products on the market that allow remote GUI access --

SMS V 1.2 has remote administration for NT.
Remotely Possible by Avalon is pretty good. (see www.avalon.com)
McAfee has a remote GUI feature.

629.2NT Cluster Remote AdministrationZPOVC::SOONHENGMon Feb 17 1997 23:3913
    Thank you for your advise.

Probably I did not make it clear. Remote administration of NT is
possible by System Management Software ( SMS ) from Microsoft.
My concern now is remote administration of NT Cluster Administration.
NT Cluster Administration is a GUI interface that is usually installed
together with the cluster software on both Nodes and not on any client.
Hence, a remote client does not have access to this administration GUI
interface, how could this client do remote management then ?

    Thank you.

I don't know if PC Anywhere is available for Windows NT, but if
it (or some similar product exists), then it's theoretically possible
that you could do remote cluster management.

I've used PC Anywhere for Windows and it allows you to use your
PC monitor as a display device to a remote PC -- kind of like the
"olden days" where you had a terminal at home and dialed into
your mainframe.

A remote capability for the Cluster Administrator is on the wishlist
but there is no schedule for providing this feature. As we migrate
folks to Wolfpack, I'd expect this to become less of an issue since
I've heard that the Wolfpack GUI has the remote capability.

Hope this is useful...

PCAnywhere32 v7.5 is available only for the Intel platform. We are using
Remotely Possible (Avalan) that runs on Alpha, though we've noticed that
it can peg the CPU. However, I don't believe that original note is
referring to "taking over" the console remotely. I believe that we're
looking for a "Cluster Administrator" that can run remotely. Similar
to NT "Server Tools" that can run on on NT clients: WfWg, Windows 95,
and NT Workstation.

How important is this feature to readers of this conference and our customers?
The priorities for future versions of Digital Clusters are being decided now,
and it is easier to propose new features that have a strong business
justification. Please send your requests to our product manager, Salley
Anderson, DECWET::SALLEY.

Thanks,

Will

Well Will, you got to spend a few days with a customer who sure could
use this feature. Both in their development facility and in production
when they chose to use this product in production.

    ;-)

Any product that comes out today WITHOUT remote management capability
has a big strike against it. Remote management of NT systems is about
the biggest issue my customers deal with on a daily basis. Things are
getting better; but if the decision is between a product with good
remote management capability but mediocre usefulness and good usefulness
but little/no remote management, it is likely to go to the product with
remote management capability. These systems are going into many
environments where there is either: a) no technical support at the
site, or b) the support staff doesn't want the 'technical support'
at the site to have any access to the system.
