489.0. ""Going Places" on PBS" by NETCAD::MORRISON (Bob M. LKG2-A/R5 226-7570) Thu Feb 27 1997 12:59

About 6 weeks ago, PBS began running a travelogue series called "Going
Places". The host is Al Roker, who I had never heard of before.
The first two programs were on Las Vegas and New Orleans. I thought they
were pretty good. They kept it moving without following the frenetic pace of
the earlier PBS travelogue series "Rough Guide".
The third program was of a Caribbean cruise. It was pretty good, showing
a lot of the stuff that happens on modern cruises. But it ran out of steam
about half way thru, spending too much time on the variety show.
I was disappointed with the the last two programs. The one on Africa (I
forgot where) got boring very quickly. And the one on Italy was very
amateurish. Al Roker didn't take the trip at all, and the producers seem to
have turned the production over to a third party. The camera work was too
jerky, too much zooming in and out etc. They tried to imitate Rough Guide,
even featuring a lookalike of Rough Guide hostess Magenta DeVine. But it was
a very crude imitation.
I'm disappointed. I like to see faraway places in a manner that is access-
ible to tourists but not run-of-the-mill tourism. And a good travelogue can
provide that kind of experience.

I can't picture Al Roker going anywhere Rough Guide would go. He is the
"Weaatherman" for the Today Show on NBC, having pretty much taken over
for Willard Scott. they have baldness (lots of it) and size (lots of
it) in common. :-) I like Al when I watch, which is rare. Anyway,
    that's Al.
